Europe is a traveller’s dream. It has iconic sites and hidden gems, a patchwork of cultures and cuisines, and history and scenery aplenty. Your European holiday can be anything from a luxurious sojourn to an action-packed adventure, depending on your travel style. If you’re heading off to Europe chasing the perfect trip, then here are some things to consider to get the most out of your holiday.

Don’t pack too much

Overpacking is a sure-fire way to add stress to your holiday. In Europe you’ll find plenty of cobblestone streets that can shake the wheels off a big suitcase, and elevators can be scarce. You’ll find yourself carrying your luggage up and down stairs in hotels and train stations, and while many hotels will offer a porter service if you need, being able to comfortably carry what you pack will make life much easier.

Don’t sit down in a café

Europe is full of charming little cafés that welcome you with their delicious coffee and tantalising pastries. Most will have a countertop where you can stand while you down your treats, or the option to take a seat instead. If you choose the latter, it’s common to find a small service charge applied to your bill. It’s often worth paying a little more to warm your bones in a cosy coffee shop in winter, or to soak up some rays in a terrace café in the summertime, just be mindful that you may be paying for the privilege.

Don’t skip the research

Like with anything, research and preparation are key when it comes to travel. Look into the appropriate clothing for your trip, both to suit the weather and the culture, and make sure your walking shoes are worn in. Have your foreign currency sorted, access to your finances arranged, and carry some coins for tipping and for access to public toilets. It’s also important to learn some of the language so you can whip out some phrases as you go – it will break the ice with the locals and come in handy on your travels.

Don’t be afraid to try new things

If you were reading the menu in a quaint restaurant in Portugal, would you be likely to order the salted cod (honestly)? What if you knew it was a national dish adored by the locals? It’s easy to stick to the familiar on holidays, however, sometimes the real magic happens when you step outside your comfort zone and try new things. You’ll get a truly authentic experience during your trip this way, and maybe find some treasures you never knew existed.

Don’t rush your trip

Often holidays are so jam-packed with sightseeing the highlights that you forget to slow down and enjoy it. Make sure you give yourself some time to relax and really be on holidays. Do as the locals do, particularly in Western Europe, and schedule in some siesta time or read a good book. Take some time out just to stroll the cobblestone streets and soak it all in. It’s all about finding your balance.
