People from all around the world visit the United States National Parks, Monuments and Historical Sites; and in so doing, they have a close-up experience at the story of America. Additionally, they have the opportunity to marvel at the natural wonders in the United States when visiting places such as the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park and the other national parks that have been left much as they have been for thousands of years; and also visit places of history such as Statue of Liberty, Freedom Walk in Boston and the Gettysburg Battlefield. Along with these (and other) very popular destinations, they are also invited to experience the hundreds of lesser known yet equally meaningful gems like Rosie the Riveter in California, Boston Harbor Islands in Massachusetts, and Russell Cave in Alabama. But the work of the National Park Service does not stop here. Beyond national parks, the National Park Service helps communities across America preserve and enhance important local heritage and recreational opportunities close to their homes. Grants and assistance are offered to register, record and save historic places; create community parks and local recreation facilities; conserve rivers and streams, and develop trails and greenways.
