Childress, the County Seat of Childress County, was established in 1876. Childress is located 116 miles southeast of Amarillo, 139 miles northeast of Lubbock, and 108 miles northwest of Wichita Falls on Highways 83 & 287. Highway 83 is a direct route from Mexico to Canada. Its physical features are rolling prairie, draining to Prairie Dog Town Fork of Red River; mixed soils.  Lakes Childress and Baylor Creek Lake provide fishing recreation and camping.  Hunting in the area bring those seeking quail, turkey, deer and wild hog.

Childress, Texas was established in 1876, created out of the Bexar-Young Districts. The county was officially organized April 11, 1887 and was given the name "Childress County", named for an attorney, George C. Childress, who authored the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Childress' recreation facilities include city parks, city swimming pool, public golf course, tennis courts, baseball fields and fishing and water activities at Childress Lake and Baylor Lake.  Childress is located within a one hour drive of four State Parks.
