Although there is very little variation in temperatures from north to south, the temperatures in the higher elevations can get down right cold in the winter. State Parks and Recreation Areas
There are few states better than Tennessee for state parks and recreation areas. Just click here (Tennessee State Parks and Recreation Areas) to find information on these wonderful areas for overnights, either camping from very complete facilities to primitive or beautiful lodges, cabins, and motel-type accommodations; some great hiking and walking trails; good fishing and hunting and thousands of square miles of boating opportunities; and many other areas for just about any outdoor sport or activity you could imagine.
Two of my personal favorites would include Fall Creek Falls (Fall Creek Falls) and the
South Cumberland State Recreation Area. (South Cumberland State Recreation Area) The South Cumberland area is made up of several different areas where you can really get out and enjoy the countryside as you walk the hills and valleys of the area. And, Fall Creek Falls, is just a wonderful place. Be sure to visit there at least one time in the winter when you can see the ice over the falls.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The national park, in
the states of North Carolina and Tennessee, encompasses 800 square miles of
which 95 percent are forested. World renowned for the diversity of its plant and
animal resources, the beauty of its ancient mountains, the quality of its
remnants of Southern Appalachian mountain culture, and the depth and integrity
of the wilderness sanctuary within its boundaries, it is one of the largest
protected areas in the east. Click on Great

Gatlinburg
An attraction of Biblical proportions, Christus
Gardens features a dramatic and inspirational portrayal of the Life of
Christ enhanced by beautiful choral music, dramatic lighting and a moving
narrative. Opened in August of 1960, and having a non-denominational
religious theme, many people questioned whether it would have much appeal in a
carefree family vacation center. Nearly four decades later, this unique
presentation that takes visitors into a world of 2,000 years ago through
life-size, life-like scenes from the Bible has become world-famous and is one of
Gatlinburg's leading attractions.

Dining
Suggestions
Chattanooga
Town & Country Restaurant - This place has been around since 1947. It is family
owned (by the same family that started the restaurant in '47) and serves some
great meals. This is one of my favorite places for Sunday dinner anywhere in the
state. The menu is wonderful and filled with all of those things you used to
find in American restaurants! Fresh vegetables and steak are staples, as are the
pasta dishes and hot soups. Lunchtime there is an express menu featuring country
style steak, fried chicken, club sandwiches and more. Dinner will cost about
$12, lunch a mere $7. Top off your meal with a piping hot cup of coffee and a
delicious slice of cake or pie. 110 North Market Street (just over the bridge
from the aquarium), Phone - 423.267.8544
Cleveland
Tres Hermanos - Located at 2502 North Ocoee Street is a pretty good Mexican
restaurant. They have all of the traditional items on the restaurant, along with
several other interesting items. Try their Ensalada Fresca or the Quesadilla
Deluxe.
Nashville
Elliston Place Soda Shop - Located at 2111 Elliston Place, the small
restaurant has been in operation since 1939, making it the oldest restaurant
continuously operating in Nashville. The menu includes daily "meat-and-three"
specials with an appealing selection of comfort foods such as fried chicken and
mashed potatoes. I love the greens there! They also offer a variety of burgers
and sandwiches. The burgers are tasty and go well with a malt or shake.
Regardless of what you order, you can have a complete meal and still spend well
under ten dollars. 2111 Elliston Place Nashville 37203. 615-327-1090. Be sure to
stop in at Elder's Bookstore just down the street while you are in the area.
Shelbyville
Plantation House Restaurant - It is always nice to find a good restaurant
when you are on the road and the Plantation House is just such a place. They are
open Monday through Friday from 11:00 with a nice buffet along with a menu that
includes some good sandwiches and salads. Plantation House Restaurant &
Catering, 208 Elm Street, Shelbyville, TN 37160, 931.684.2868.

Some Favorites in Tennessee
Watts Bar Resort is one of my
favorite getaway places in Tennessee. It is great for a family reunion.
And, I always try to be driving by at meal time just so I can eat in the
restaurant there! (Note; I have recently learned (as of January, 2007, that the
resort is under new management. If anyone has any current information on the
place, please let me know. I know it was always one of my favorite stops when I
lived in Georgia, but since retiring in Arizona, I have not been there. Thanks,
Jim.) mailto:jimbruner@gettingaway.com
