Mount Rushmore

Your travel source with a personal touch!

Take a mountain, add an idea and a sculptor who can fulfill that idea, and you may end up with one of the modern day wonders of the world -- Mount Rushmore.

Carved from the granite of the Black Hills are the images of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt.  The faces measure about 60 feet in height and the impact of seeing them off in the distance through the trees is unforgettable.

The sculptors were Gutzon Borglum, who began the monument, and his son Lincoln.  It was Lincoln who finished the monument.  This piece of America may just be the single most recognizable piece of real estate in the United States.

The Visitor Center is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 8 to 10, and from Labor Day to Memorial Day from 8 to 5.  There are special programs at Mt. Rushmore that include an evening program in the amphitheater, that includes a lighting ceremony, during the summer months. Visitors will also find a gift shop, snack shop, and the Buffalo Dining Room.
