Bluffton
If you are in the Hilton Head area, and it is time to eat, stop in
Bluffton at Sigler's Rotisserie & Seafood. Sigler's has a nice selection
that includes fresh seafood selections and several entrees from the rotisserie
and open kitchen. They also have early dining specials between 4:30 and 5:45,
Monday through Saturday. They are located at 12 Sheridan Park Circle
(843.815.5030).
Another excellent place to eat is the British Open Pub. This
restaurant is located in Sun City. Just tell the guard at the gate you want to
have some good fish 'n chips or bangers and mash. Seriously, although they do
offer some of these traditional British selections, they have a great menu of
steaks and chops, poultry and pasta, and seafood. They also have restaurants on
Hilton Head and on Cat Island. 843.705.4005.

Cherry Grove
L'il Pie House
I had it on good authority (my folks) that the cinnamon rolls baked here
were out of this world. Well, I was passing through this area near North
Myrtle Beach so I looked up the L'il Pie House. It was not much to look at
from the outside, but the moment I walked in the door, and got a whiff of
that wonderful aroma of hot cinnamon rolls, I knew that I had received some
very good information. Of course, along with the cinnamon rolls, they have
pies - cream pies, custard pies and fruit pies. |
 |
|
 |
I have not heard a lot about their pies, but
stopping in the morning for a cinnamon roll and a cup of coffee is well
worth finding the place. They do not make any cinnamon rolls on Sunday, but
they do Monday through Saturday (in the summer months), and on Friday and
Saturday during the winter. They are located just a block off Ocean at 203
Sea Mountain Highway, North Myrtle Beach. 843.249.9037.
Don't' visit the Myrtle Beach area without a
visit to the L'il Pie house in Cherry Grove. Jim |
Chester
Chester is a fine example of why you should get off of the expressway to
really see America. The short drive off of I-20 takes you back into time and
gives you some fine examples of our nation's beginnings.
Founded by Irish Quakers in 1751, it's the
state's oldest inland town. During the Revolutionary War, 14 battles raged
within a 30-mile radius here. Cornwallis held Camden until the British burned
the town and retreated in 1781. The town was burned again in the Civil War when
Sherman went through the area. Along with the historical significance of the
town (historic relics are everywhere you look), Camden is equally well known for
the training of fine Thoroughbred horses and each year hosts the internationally
known Colonial Cup steeplechase.
While you are here you will want to visit Revolutionary War Park
that is affiliated with the National Park Service. There are restored log houses
with museum exhibits, fortifications, the Cornwallis House, a powder magazine,
an 80-building model of the original town, and miniature dioramas depicting
military actions between 1780 and 1781.
The historic downtown area is great for
walking and shopping. There are also some good restaurants in the downtown area.
I would recommend Lucy's and The Paddock. You will also want to visit the many
interesting shops in town.

Georgetown
Georgetown is located along US17 about halfway between Charleston and
Myrtle Beach. And, if you judge Georgetown by what you pass as you travel along
the highway, you are missing a lot. Make the turn on Front Street and drive into
the center of the historic district. Park the car, take your camera, and take a
walk through this interesting little seaside town. There is an interesting
boardwalk that fronts along the Sampit River. At the Rice Museum (1842) you can
get a map of the historic district that will lead you to over 50 places of
interest. One place you will really want to visit, and pick up a few things, is
Sweeties where you can find some wonderful hand-made sweets, including their
original low country pralines. Sweeties also have a location on Pawleys Island. Go to
www.seaportgeorgetown.com for lots of good information about
Georgetown, the third oldest city in South Carolina.

McLeod Farms
This place has been growing and selling fruits and vegetables by the side of
the road since 1916. They operate one of the largest peach orchards in the
area, growing 22 varieties on 400 acres just outside the small town of McBee.
Kemp McLeod runs the place and is the fourth generation to work the family
orchards. Be sure to stop by and say, "Hi," and take home some great items
from the store. You will also want to visit the museum. 843.335.8335.
