The look at the Ace Portland leans heavily on recycled and repurposed materials — bits and pieces from the original Clyde Hotel as well as disused factory furniture, clip-on lights and military-surplus pieces — and scrappy works by local artists. Benson Hotel This grand, old dowager hotel, may have been coasting on its reputation for a while, but it is still Portland’s most elegant. The Benson Hotel was built by lumber baron Simon Benson in 1912, in the pre-Crash days of American industrialism, when the captains of the logging industry were the Pacific Northwest’s versions of the Carnegies and Rockefellers of the East. From the first step into the lobby, guests are immersed in the old-world grandeur, surrounded by Circassian walnut paneling, an Italian marble staircase, and Austrian crystal chandeliers. Upstairs the guest rooms are more of the same; not exactly sprawling, in keeping with the original floor plans, but impossibly posh, especially for this dressed-down city. Suites, though, are expansive, especially the penthouses, with panoramic views, and the Grand suites, complete with baby grand piano. Junior suites are a good compromise—roomy, plush, and located at the corners to maximize whatever sunlight makes it through Portland’s persistent rain clouds. Dining options include the London Grill, in the hotel’s vault, a fine dining restaurant with one of the most extensive wine lists in the Northwest. Next door to the hotel is El Gaucho, an Argentinean-style steakhouse, complete with live music and a cigar lounge. All of downtown Portland is within easy reach as well, including Powell’s Books, one of America’s best bookstores, just four blocks to the west.

The Governor Hotel is a splendid Arts and Crafts hotel with a bit of a Lewis and Clark fixation; murals depicting the famed explorers adorn the lobby walls, alongside mahogany paneling and rich leather furniture. In fact the décor is so well done it’s hard to believe it’s a restoration—the hotel was recently just a shadow of its 1909 glory, rescued from dilapidation in the Nineties, the west wing converted into the new lobby in 2004. Rooms are handsome, in a classic style, yet more obviously contemporary than the lobby or facade would have you believe. Earth tones are predominant, browns, beiges and creams, with dark wooden armoires alongside modern office chairs and writing desks. Business travelers will appreciate the high-speed wireless internet access, and leisure travelers would do well to consider the terrace suites, with dazzling panoramic views from spacious outdoor patios—umbrellas are thoughtfully included, in preparation for the often-wet Portland weather. As for the location, it’s central to all the downtown attractions, with the streetcar right outside, and the Max light rail is a block away. Jake’s Grill is just off the lobby, and is a worthy entry, though the immediate neighborhood offers plenty of other restaurant options, as well as shops and galleries.

Jupiter Hotel Though there’s a certain family resemblance between a hotel like the Jupiter and the glossy high-design luxury boutiques you see in the design magazines, the small-market American budget boutique is an altogether different sort of place. The Jupiter, the Thunderbird or the Hotel San Jose in the heart of Texas, the Ace in Seattle: all are visually appealing, stylishly designed, and all are eminently livable; luxury, however, is not a part of the program. Get your head around this idea and you’re in for a good time. The Jupiter, like its cohorts, is aimed at young, creative types, an audience that’s interested in design and in thoughtful and quirky hotels, but that would feel underdressed in a high-gloss hotel like one of Ian Schrager’s, for example. The Jupiter’s guests are more likely artists who don't spend much time sleeping in their hotel rooms than design-industry professionals with expense accounts. It’s hard to imagine feeling underdressed in the Jupiter, or anywhere in Portland, a deeply casual city. It’s an unprepossessing sort of hotel, a renovated Sixties motor inn attached to the Doug Fir Lounge, one of Portland’s top bars and live music venues. This makes for a lively atmosphere, and more than a little noise; choose a front-side room if you’re social, and a back-side one if you’re a fussy sleeper. Inside they’re handsomely minimalist, mostly white, with bold wallpaper — photorealistic forest scenes, or vibrant cartoony florals — and simple Blu Dot furnishings alongside recognizable designer pieces (provenance not guaranteed). Comfortable, to be sure, but far from decadent. Big-city boutique clichés like pricy fusion restaurants or $18 hotel-bar cocktails are right out — the Doug Fir is more about upmarket diner fare, and like any indie-hipster bar, it pours more Pabst Blue Ribbon than martinis or mojitos. If you’re up for it, you can get yourself a massage on-site, or even a haircut, but extras like these are somewhat beside the point. The Jupiter is quite naturally a part of what’s happening in Portland, and you’ll see as many locals as out-of-towners in this stylish crowd — and that touch of authenticity is something money can’t buy.
