Alex Hotel
In hotels, as well as in the air, sometimes if you want to be treated properly you’ve got to spring for business class. In the case of the Alex Hotel, that means a stunning, stylish hotel, the last word in modern minimalism from David Rockwell, with rooms, suites and apartments that are as lavishly appointed as they are visually serene.

The location, in east midtown, is the first clue that the Alex is geared more to the executive than the tourist. But if you can stand being more than a stone’s throw from the city’s hottest bars and restaurants, then there’s a lot to be said for the upgrade. These rooms are more than just one-nighters — they’re made for medium-term executive living, and come appointed accordingly: entertainment centers, fine linens, ultra-high-design German kitchen gear by Poggenpohl, and limestone bathtubs, these last a real rarity for a New York hotel room.

Those lucky ones who actually are here on business will find a clever little office that folds out of a closet among the custom-designed Rockwell furniture. Meanwhile all of us, workers and layabouts alike, benefit from an in-house Japanese-American restaurant by Marcus Samuelsson, of Aquavit fame.

The Barclay New York

The Barclay is a high-end hotel that boasts 686 beautifully appointed guest rooms, 86 of which are suites and 35 of which are business rooms. The Barclay recently underwent an extensive renovation project that has left the hotel more glamorous than ever. The Barclay successfully combines cozy living quarters with an excellent working environment. Guests of the hotel may choose between several room types including Guest Room, Suite and Luxury Suite. The top-of-the-line in-room amenities provide guests with all of the comforts of home, and then some. Each accommodation boasts a state-of-the-art entertainment center that features a remote controlled color cable television, Sega game system and digital high-speed movies. Guests may even skip the hassle of front desk checkout and settle the bill instead from the comfort of their own room via the television.

Business travelers will appreciate the custom-made spacious work desks, ample lighting and dual-line telephones with voice mail and modem hook-up capability. Guests of the business rooms can search the information highway from their rooms as each accommodation has high-speed Internet access. Some rooms also have printers, copiers and fax machines in addition to stereo systems. Other in-room amenities include iron, ironing board, hairdryer, in-room safe, centralized heating and air conditioning, scale, make-up mirror, marble bathrooms, mini-bar and plush bathrobes. Complimentary newspapers are delivered to rooms daily. Handicap accessible and nonsmoking rooms are available upon request as are baby cribs and roll-away beds.

The Bowery Hotel
The Bowery Hotel — the name alone pretty much sums it up. The first and only high-design hotel on this one-time skid row is the younger sister to the Maritime, over in the Meatpacking district, and is thus fueling fears among downtown purists that this little strip, bordering on the East Village and the still-seedy Lower East Side, will be the next to gentrify. Quite arguably, it’s already happening, and the realists among us will learn to sit back and enjoy the ride. After all, we come not to bury CBGB, but to praise the Bowery . . .

And praiseworthy it certainly is. Like The Hotel on Rivington, it’s an incongruously tall building in a low-rise neighborhood (for the time being at least), so the views from the open-plan loft-style rooms show a side of the East Village that’s rarely seen. Rooms are swanky, with generous space, fine linens, iPods, and top-shelf bath products.

Public spaces, though, are slightly more stripped-down — this place is made for revelry, not pampering, with an emphasis on nightlife at the expense of some other luxe-hotel frills. You’re not going to get babied here, Four Seasons-style; you will, however, mingle with an interesting (and youthful) crowd of hipsters and Bowery early adopters, and you’ll have access to some of New York’s last wild neighborhoods, while familiar old Soho and Tribeca aren’t far beyond.

The Bryant Park Hotel
The American Radiator building is a strange and imposing landmark, a black-and-gold gothic skyscraper, towering above Bryant Park like something out of a comic book. How pleasantly surprising, then, to find that it houses a boutique hotel that is as sober and restrained as many of its competitors are loud and garish.

Restrained doesn’t mean boring—just that the Bryant Park hotel eschews the kind of flashy showmanship that has become all too familiar in the boutique hotel world. The lobby, though decked out in rather unconventional black terra cotta and red leather, feels as serious as the building’s facade, without too-clever furniture or whimsical sculptural statements, and the Cellar Bar is true to its roots as well, with vaulted ceilings and tilework reminiscent of nothing so much as a restored subway station.

All the architectural sobriety doesn’t seem to be cramping the clientele’s style, especially during fashion week, which turns the park into an exhibition hall and momentarily makes the Bryant Park Hotel the most desirable address in New York.

As for the accommodations, a complete renovation from the American Radiator days apparently meant the death of many an interior wall—the rooms today are spacious, especially for a midtown hotel, and boast loft-style hardwood floors. Views tend toward the extraordinary, looking over Bryant Park, and some rooms come with private terraces, not at all New York standard. Expect lush goose-down duvets and rich linens, and massive tubs and sinks in the travertine bathrooms.

The cachet-meter has risen another notch or two with the opening of the New York outpost of LA’s painfully hip KOI sushi restaurant. Yet another reason for Bryant Park regulars to stop worrying about Soho and learn to love midtown.

The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel
This is the old-world, old-money face of Manhattan, the Upper East Side, where the wealthy (including the occasional head of state) pass their time, leaving downtown to the trend-chasers and aspirants. For many of us a trip to The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel, is as close as we can ever come to the storybook New York of days gone by, when Marilyn may have been whisked through the side entrance for an appointment with JFK.

Recent renovations have added almost nothing new, merely heightening the time-travel feel of the place, returning the original shine to the distinctly British Empire interiors. The Carlyle can’t be bothered to notice recent ‘developments’ in the hospitality industry; this is a place that clearly operates under the assumption that last century’s hoteliers got it right, and that discreet and old-fashioned service goes a long way—sadly almost a novel idea at this point.

The location is unparalleled, a stone’s throw from Central Park and just a block north of the Whitney Museum on Madison Avenue, with what may be the world’s best shopping within walking distance. Any designer worth a mention has a boutique within a few blocks from here, not to mention Barneys, and the upscale residential neighborhoods make for first-class people-watching.

Executive travelers take note: The Carlyle is not exactly the most modern of business hotels, and the staff, though supremely professional, are unlikely to be able to sync your laptop to your PDA. They are handy with a phone message, however, and discreet in a way the fashion students and aspiring actors who staff the downtown hotels will never be. If your happiness depends on late-night debauchery and being photographed in the city’s hottest nightspots, then there are downtown locations that would be better suited (consult Time Out for the hip neighborhood of the season), but for a taste of old-school Upper Manhattan, The Carlyle is ideal.

The Chambers
Chambers bills itself as a Soho hotel with a Midtown address, and truth be told, that’s not far off the mark — up here in the Fifties, off the main shopping drag of Fifth Avenue, the last thing one expects to see is a small boutique hotel with loft-style guest rooms and fashion-forward, subtly Eastern interiors. Yet that’s precisely what Chambers is, and its uniqueness has made it something of a hit, miles from both the stuffy high seriousness of the midtown luxury hotels and the relentless whimsy of the youth-market boutiques.

Oversized wooden doors and a towering fireplace open up a surprisingly spacious lobby, remarkable given the limitations of the compact space the hotel has to work with. Upstairs each floor’s landing and corridors are individually designed by a different artist — some are upbeat and sunny, others darker and moodier.

Not at all dark or moody, however, are the guest rooms, fashioned after downtown artists’ lofts, all open space and rough-finished concrete walls, hung with contemporary artworks and fitted with stylish modern furnishings. Platform beds are piled with fine linens, flat-screen televisions and DVD players are standard, and the sleek modern bathrooms are stocked with Bumble and Bumble bath products.

Some of the pricier suites come with private terraces, offering sublime city views — these are perfect for entertaining, and sizeable enough for bigger functions if need be. Downstairs is the TOWN restaurant and bar, offering fine dining and cocktails in a striking contemporary environment. And outside? If you can’t find what you’re looking for within five blocks of 56th and 5th, it probably doesn’t exist.

Fairmont Hotels

A century ago, The Plaza set the standard for luxury and that tradition continues when the iconic hotel makes its grand debut this winter, following a $400 million, two-year renovation.  The passion and uncompromising service, which made the hotel a legend, will return with a new and contemporary spirit.

The Plaza hotel will offer 282 distinctive guestrooms, including 152 pied-à-terres, which will boast the largest square footage of any luxury property in New York.  From the sumptuous décor to the impeccable white glove service, the Plaza is an extraordinary hotel that will offer its guests every indulgence.  Amenities include a world-class retail collection featuring exclusive boutiques and purveyors of fine food, as well as health and wellness facilities, including a Caudalie Spa, Fitness Center by Radu and Warren Tricomi Salon.

The passion and uncompromising attention to detail which made The Plaza a legend in New York City has returned in all of its opulent grandeur - with a new contemporary spirit. Thoughtfully renovated with impeccable richness and delicate grace, the refined elegance of each spacious guest room and suite is inspired by the Louis XV style of French décor. Each room has been sumptuously decorated with luxurious furnishings featuring marquetry that emphasizes curved lines, fine details, and delicate colors, along with richly veined marble, and inlay work in exotic woods, mother-of-pearl and ivory - providing the guest with an experience that is both indulgent and exquisite.  Each elegantly appointed bathroom is designed to provide guests with a soothing setting for respite and relaxation. A graceful inlaid “earth stone” floral wall mosaic brings the tranquil and authentic beauty of the Central Park landscape indoors. The Plaza has the extraordinary honor of being the first hotel in the world to have 24-carat gold plated Sherle Wagner designed sinks and fixtures in every guest room and suite - these lavish custom designed basins are carefully cradled by imported and hand crafted solid white marble vanities.

The Four Seasons
The Four Seasons is not exactly a cozy hotel. Nor is it an understated one. At 52 stories, it’s New York’s tallest, and at 600 square feet, its standard guest room is New York’s largest. From the thirty-three-foot onyx-and-alabaster lobby ceiling to the bathtubs that fill in sixty seconds flat, the Four Seasons New York is about as big as you can get. In a hotel scene that’s all about (false?) modesty, minimalism, and black Prada, it’s refreshing to see this limestone monument to the old New York of splendor and showing off. Here, your floor is a status symbol, and perfectly grown-up celebs fight for the right to be higher.

Being I.M. Pei’s only complete project in the Western hemisphere, it doesn’t look like any of the other Four Seasons hotels, with its sleek modern facade. They’ve got the same limestone as the Louvre — not just the same kind of limestone, but limestone that was quarried at exactly the same time and place. The interiors throughout are caramel and ivory and very, very Deco. Polished oval tables, Corbusier prints, and blonde sofas the color of Harlow’s hair. You can see Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers tripping across its reflective marble floors, and Nick and Nora Charles checking in with their terrier.

Outdoing everyone else is the Four Seasons’ game. They bought out the world’s supply of English sycamore—two years’ worth—to furnish the guest rooms. They don’t just have bathrooms (which are, by the way, the size of most Manhattan apartments), they have dressing rooms. When most top New York hotels went out and bought Frette linens, the Four Seasons changed theirs to Rivot Carmegini. They don’t have one martini drink at the bar, they have fourteen. They’ve been voted as having the best breakfast, the best tea, and the best power lunch.

The Gramercy Park Hotel
The fact that it’s Ian Schrager’s first hotel venture since his departure from the Morgans Hotel Group means that the Gramercy Park Hotel qualifies as big news, and upon the occasion of its opening much ink was spilled beneath any number of headlines, all of which said something roughly like The Boutique Hotel Is Dead, Long Live Ian Schrager. For the real news, you see, is that he has apparently repudiated the very concept of the hip hotel, a concept which if you’ve been following along was born of the 1980s collaboration between Schrager himself and Philippe Starck, and which has since been done absolutely to death by just about everyone else.

Unfortunately for the headline writers of the world (but fortunately for the hotel’s guests, as you’ll see) the Gramercy Park Hotel, for all the drama of its break with the previous arc of Schrager’s career, is in fact quite hip. It’s just that these days hip means something very different from what it used to. Nowadays interiors as cold and white as upholstered ice are commonplace, and a hotel just isn’t a proper boutique unless its lobby is overflowing with forced architectural whimsy and its bar is overflowing with the sort of people who exist only to be photographed at parties.

That sort of thing used to be cool, as ludicrous as it sounds. But what Schrager must be banking on is that the new cool looks something like this: not the desiccated atmosphere of a furniture showroom but rather an eclectic, bohemian approach, like someplace a very successful artist might live — someone like, say, Julian Schnabel, who by an extraordinary coincidence happens to have designed the interiors at the Gramercy Park, along with the famous British architect John Pawson. And instead of a velvet rope lined with vapid party people, you’ll have some genuine exclusivity about the place: it was here, in the hotel’s Rose Bar, that Schrager famously threw out the execrable Paris Hilton (never mind that she was a hotel guest at the time), putting her “and her ilk” on notice, starting a wave of blacklisting that, as far as we’re concerned, can’t possibly go too far.

If this is indeed the new face of the boutique hotel, then the coming years, as competitors scramble to imitate the place, will be happy ones: we’re all for bigger, more livable rooms, bathrooms spacious enough to function properly, professional service, an art collection straight out of MoMA, and a tinge of nostalgia for the refined glamour of prewar (or at least pre-disco) Manhattan. The hotel also offers the fine dining Chinese restaurant Wakiya, including a Dim-Sum Weekend Brunch, and a members-only Roof Club and Garden, as well as the Rose and Jade bars, the spa and fitness center, and, of course, the park: guests are issued keys to Gramercy Park itself, the only private park in Manhattan, another place where presumably Ms. Hilton and her ilk are not welcome.

Hotel Gansevoort
The latest in a string of contenders for hippest New York neighborhood, the Meatpacking District is home to the city’s hottest restaurants and bars, a number of upscale boutiques and salons, and if you’re up early enough, a bit of genuine old-fashioned meatpacking. Its advantages over other would-be hotspots (Hell’s Kitchen? Brooklyn, anyone?) include its deep downtown location, convenient to the financial district as well as the artier Soho and West Village, as well as, in places like the Gansevoort’s rooftop lounge, sweeping views of the Hudson River.

Add to that, now, one of New York’s most striking modern hotels, an unashamedly upscale glass and metal structure, refreshing amidst the neighborhood’s fake-old reproduction restaurants and real-old cobbled streets and brick warehouses. At just thirteen stories it would be no more than a bump in the midtown pavement; down here, though, the skyline is lower, and Hotel Gansevoort fairly towers over its neighbors. You may even be able to peer mockingly down upon the star-studded rooftop bar of the members-only Soho House from the comfort of your room.

And quite a room it is: in addition to the view, there are the basics like wi-fi internet and plasma TVs, as well as rare (for New York) high ceilings and bay windows, and some novel lighting effects. But as above-average as the rooms are, it’s the public spaces that truly impress, from Ono, the Jeffrey Chodorow-helmed Japanese restaurant, to the rooftop deck with its 45-foot heated pool (complete with underwater sound system) and its garden and lounge, offering 360-degree views.

Like any newly hip neighborhood, the Meatpacking District lives and dies by its nightlife, and the same is true to some extent of the Gansevoort itself. At night the neighborhood is beset with revelers from all over the city, and the hotel bar itself is a hot ticket. There’s no shortage of entertainment; but mercifully for those in search of a quiet night’s sleep, the rooms are sufficiently above it all to afford a measure of peace.

Hotel Giraffe
It’s a strange animal in a slightly eccentric location — the Giraffe stands on Park Avenue South at 26th street, north of downtown and south of Midtown, well outside the bounds of the tourist traps and hipster neighborhoods. In this neighborhood you can safely forget about minimalism or Soho-style loft bedrooms — the Giraffe’s interiors are Moderne in style, a sort of French-inflected post-Art Deco look, a perfect complement to the vaguely European turn-of-the-century architecture along Madison and Park avenues. The experience isn’t overwhelmingly retro, but the rooftop garden and the elegant lobby, filled with the gentle strains of piano music, can’t help but carry a tinge of a bygone era. And the rooms are spacious, especially by New York hotel standards, with ten-foot ceilings and, in the deluxe rooms, French doors opening onto balconies over Park Avenue South.

The location is a touch on the quiet side, but this shouldn’t put you off; it’s certainly not remote, and like anywhere in Manhattan it’s close by to a wealth of dining and entertainment options. There’s a continental breakfast included in the rate, and a restaurant downstairs, as well as easy access to dozens of others nearby, from fast food to fine dining to the one and only Shake Shack.

Hotel Indigo
Imagine a 100% smoke-free sophisticated boutique hotel whose focus is delivering guests peace, serenity and renewal. Quite deliberately the Hotel Indigo New York City-Chelsea has been designed as an oasis for travelers who yearn for an escape from the common hotel, but still need the convenience of a 24-hour fitness center and a world class restaurant. Hotel Indigo New York City-Chelsea, located in the heart of Manhattan, provides convenience to dynamic shopping, the lights of Broadway, vigorous nightlife, and art galleries. Hotel Indigo offers each guest a blend of modern contemporary living with the best in traditional hotel hospitality. Curl up in our over-sized beds with plush bedding, duvet covers and plenty of fluffy pillows. Complimentary wireless Internet access throughout the hotel is at your fingertips or use our business center if you prefer. Relax and enjoy our exclusive restaurant for cutting edge cuisine or grab a Starbucks latte. Hotel QT
First, jokingly code-named the Sub-Standard by its proprietor, Hotel QT is no longer a budget hotel. The idea is to offer limited service, but still chic, more inspiring and attractive than the chain motels and stylish enough to attract the right sort of patrons. So far, it’s succeeded—though this is Times Square, you won’t see the typical tourists in souvenir shirts. Instead expect young arts and media types, up and coming musicians, and anyone else with Mercer style and a Holiday Inn budget. Youth hostels were one inspiration; but we’ve never seen a hostel with free wi-fi, flat-screen televisions, DVD players, and Egyptian cotton bedding. Rooms for four are available, with twin bunk beds and an LCD screen in each bunk, perfect for a traveling band or four very close friends. Other decidedly non-hostel perks include a swimming pool with underwater music and a swim-up window for ordering drinks from the bar. DJs play nightly in the lobby lounge, and there’s a 24-hour coffee bar for anyone exhausted by New York’s round-the-clock schedule. A continental breakfast is complimentary, and there’s even a sauna and a steam room. No restaurant, but given the location, you won’t go hungry for long. With rates starting at around two hundred and twenty-five dollars for the simplest rooms, this is an excellent value. And even if you’re not prepared to rough it, the penthouse at Hotel QT runs about as much as the most basic room at one of the tonier downtown hotels.

Hotel on Rivington
Towering above the grimy storefronts and tenement buildings of the Lower East Side, the Hotel on Rivington gambles on an unlikely location and extracts what will be, for a certain subset of travelers to New York, a weighty payoff. This is one of Manhattan’s last wild neighborhoods, and won’t appeal much to the luxury-goods travelers who stay along the fringes of Central Park, or the business travelers who pack the midtown hotels — but for the younger set with culture-industry business in the downtown arts districts, it offers a set of unique charms.

It’s an incongruous sight, this sleek glass tower sprouting above its low-slung brick neighbors, but you can’t argue with the results — the views from the rooms, even on the middling floors, are extraordinary, taking in the Financial District, the downtown bridges, even the midtown towers, depending on your room’s orientation. And the rooms themselves are surprisingly luxurious, with flat-screen televisions, CD stereo systems and access to a carefully curated DVD library, along with low-tech charms like Frette linens and robes and, in many rooms, private terraces from which to take in the jaw-dropping views.

In-room spa services are available, though they’re very nearly rendered superfluous by the stunning Bisazza-tiled bathrooms, complete with deep Japanese-style soaking tubs and Paul Labrecque bath products. The Thor restaurant, designed by Marcel Wanders, seats guests in low leather banquettes beneath futuristic floral-print wallpaper and a 21-foot glass ceiling, offering odd views up the fire escapes of the surrounding tenements. A strange sight, but a reminder that the Hotel on Rivington will live or die by its unique location. The shops and restaurants of Soho are within easy reach, and the Lower East Side has its share of attractions, including truly gritty dive bars, hipster hangouts and music venues, as well as a new crop of more upmarket nightspots.

The Hudson Hotel
The Hudson Hotel is hip — yet, some say, haunted. It is a recent addition to a string of high-concept, affordable hotels; first it was chic motels, and now the Hudson has taken over the 1928 YWCA. Located west on 58th Street, across from Central Park, it's just avenue blocks away from Morgan Stanley and Broadway, but according to most people, it's the last undiscovered territory in Manhattan, and, therefore, the locale with the most hip potential. It's a Morgans Hotel Group & Philippe Starck hotel, and that trademark Starck whimsy is on display from the moment you enter. There's a touch of kitsch 1960's fantasia — you travel up in an escalator trapped in chartreuse glass, and the bar sports a lit floor, Dali chairs, and Louis XVI chairs upholstered in Barbarella silver.

The cafeteria, though it looks pretty with its great steaming vats and long tables, serves up things more appetizing than your standard campus fare (lobster bisque, for example) And if we remember correctly, you also didn't have to pay $8.00 for a drink in college either, but at least the Hudson cocktails are more substantial than Sea Breezes and keg beer. Still, the clientele that packs the downstairs is strangely reminiscent of university days.

The standard rooms upstairs are tiny, with low ceilings. This was a YWCA, after all. Here Starck is in his more restrained mode — square beds, stainless steel tables, hardwood floors (unusual in a New York hotel) and lots and lots of white. But furnishings are more old-fashioned than Starck's usual — they're supposed to recall space-economizing yet elegant Victorian ship cabins (the dark corridors are also reminiscent of a liner). Victorian ship cabins, however, did not have up-to-the minute wiring (T1 connection), which is perfect for your youthful entrepreneur. Nor did they have, er, those revealing showers, divided from the room by a glass wall. Sweep that curtain away, and whomever is lying on the bed gets quite a show. A unique twist is the option of office or gym suites — a great choice if you need to really work or work out.

Inn at Irving Place
Quite the opposite of what the New York hotel world has become, the Inn at Irving Place is like a snapshot of an entirely different era—a pair of 1834 townhouses without so much as a sign to mark its presence, it’s as far as you can get from the shiny glamour of the big-money hotels, and miles more authentic than the mock history of the downtown hotspots, with their carefully applied patina and assembly-line antiques.

The Gramercy location is on nobody’s list of contenders for hot neighborhood of the year, which is as it should be; though blocks from Union Square, there’ll be no revelers queuing up on the street outside. In fact, if you keep your TV cabinet closed, you could easily imagine it’s 1920 or earlier, amongst the sedate antique furnishings and the distant clanking of steam heat. Rooms are luxurious in a simple and old-fashioned manner, with 21st-century necessities like wireless internet and loaner laptops alongside four-poster beds and cherrywood floors, with wooden shutters on the windows to insulate you from the city outside.

Only breakfast is served at the Inn, but the surrounding neighborhood is home to hundreds of eateries, everything from old-fashioned kosher delicatessens to hip noodle bars and fine steakhouses. The Inn at Irving Place does, however, serve afternoon tea, with tables in the parlour prepared with fine china as if for a formal meal, another nod to a bygone era.

InterContinental New York Times Square will make its debut in the “Crossroads of the World!” Times Square is the world famous epicenter of the theatre, dining, fashion, media, and business worlds. Located on Eighth Avenue, the hotel is close to Restaurant Row and the Broadway theatre district. The area is home to the best of both worlds from the razzle-dazzle of Times Square to the down-home hip of the Clinton District, historically known as “Hell’s Kitchen.” Time Warner Center, Hearst Tower, and a world-class transportation network are all right here. Towering 36 storeys above the city, the hotel provides guests with front row seats to the world’s most impressive skyline, including views over the Hudson River and the city below. We are within easy access to all three major airports (JFK, Newark and LaGuardia). For additional information, or to make reservations, click on InterContinental Hotels and Resorts.

Library Hotel
The Library is boutique hotel master Henry Kallan's latest creation. Steps away from the New York Public Library, this sixty-odd-room hotel is headquartered in a typically narrow, turn of the century building with terra cotta detailing and a copper bay window that extends down the length of the facade. It's arguably the best view of Madison Avenue. On a sunny day you can see clear down to Wall Street. The hotel boasts a collection of close to 6,000 books — all courtesy of New York's premier used book store, The Strand — and floors are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal system: the religion floor, the philosophy floor, the general knowledge floor, and so on. The highlight in the lobby is an 1880 edition of the complete works of Shakespeare and the wall behind the reception desk is a card catalog. Each room, meanwhile, is a particular category, from Modern Literature to paranormal psychology. Of course, guests can request rooms. Neil Armstrong stayed in Astronomy. The furniture at The Library is stylish, but even more importantly, it is excruciatingly comfortable. The banquettes in the reading room are soft leather, with cushions positioned to melt into your lower back. Rooms are small but comfortable, with crepe bed coverings, champagne wallpaper and frosted glass panels. The bathrooms have deep tubs and weathered green granite floors that won't freeze your bare feet. The Poetry Terrace/Writer's Den is a thoughtful public space — the Terrace enclosed in glass with potted plants, the Den a leather-seated parlor where the fireplace springs to life with a touch of the remote control. The Library is that rare find in New York — a hotel free of attitude. The staff is particularly warm — the manager drinks wine with the guests in the evening, the receptionist smiles at you, and the doorman will run three blocks to get you a cab. The only worry at the Library is the case of the disappearing books. Some mysteriously turn up in other rooms (Casanova's memoirs ending up in the Zoology suite) — perhaps the result of some late night intellectual tête-à-tête, or perhaps some guests have taken the term “check out” very literally indeed. For additional information, or to make reservations, click on The Library Hotel or Tablet Hotels.

The London NYC
Here’s a hotel that comes with some expectations. The London NYC is fresh off a thorough re-imagining at the hands of the Irish interior designer David Collins, as well as the addition of a marquee name to New York’s culinary scene, in the form of the first Gordon Ramsay restaurant on American soil.

Despite the name, the London NYC steers mercifully clear of any kind of heavy-handed British-themed kitsch. Suites range from quite spacious all the way up to downright sprawling, a luxury indeed in a city where, as in London, hotel room square footage is at a premium. The look is muted but not minimalist, a sort of understated modernist luxury, with extra attention paid to the tangible comforts, like iPod docking stations and multi-headed showers.

There’s a fitness center, which is stylish, for a fitness center, and meeting space, as well as an award-winning concierge service. So far so good. The most eagerly awaited facet of The London NYC, however, has got to be the Gordon Ramsay angle. As with anything Mr. Ramsay does, the headlines threatened to distract from the cooking — but in the end the important point is that London NYC’s restaurant is far enough beyond most hotels' offerings as to be playing in a different league entirely.

Mandarin Oriental
Located in the north tower of the brand-new, $1.7bn Time Warner Center on Columbus Circle, the Mandarin Oriental brings Far East hospitality to America's hottest hotel market. The Asian influence is apparent at a glance, with wood paneling, marble everywhere, and clean Zen-influenced design. And even the hotel's placement, occupying twenty stories near the top of a mixed-use skyscraper, mirrors the situation of Tokyo's grandest luxury hotels — the Mandarin Oriental New York is directly connected to the Time Warner shopping center, and piggybacks atop office and retail spaces to maximize views of the Hudson and Central Park (though the Trump Tower edges in on the action).

This is one of the only big business hotels in New York with a contemporary look — the guest rooms are sleek, minimal, with stylish modern furniture. But the most remarkable design choice is the inclusion of floor-to-ceiling windows — corner rooms, especially, seem suspended in air high above midtown Manhattan, offering a view that's hard to match in New York's more traditional luxury hotels. The fittings are as modern as the furnishings, with high-speed internet, in-room laptop charging safes, and flat-screen TVs in bedrooms and bathrooms. And those bathrooms are an attraction unto themselves, with separate marble baths and enclosed showers, and, in suites, vast picture windows affording bathers views of the Hudson and the park.

The only potential drawback is the price. Upon opening, the Mandarin Oriental made headlines with the most expensive hotel suite in this already expensive city — the Presidential Suite, a palatial plate glass wonder, will set you back by the price of a modest mid-sized automobile for each night. But there's always room at the top, and if there is a place for such an upscale hotel, New York is it. The facilities are top of the class, and the service, while perhaps less obsequious than that in the Far East Mandarins, is among the city's best. Don't take our word — travelers vote with their dollars, and have been doing so consistently since its late 2003 opening.

The Maritime Hotel
The Maritime Hotel was designed in 1966 for the National Maritime Union; hence its name, and its nautical theme. Today it is one of New York's hipster hangouts, owing as much to its location (just off the Meatpacking District) as to the charms of the hotel itself.

This is not a traditional hotel, by any stretch — all rooms face westward, looking over the Hudson and New Jersey through five-foot porthole windows. The rooms are compact, but well-designed, with built-in furniture, so that all the necessities (storage space, work desk, flat-screen TV) easily fit into the tiny space, and wireless internet, naturally, takes no space at all. The décor borders on kitsch, but is actually quite charming, if one accepts the ship's cabin conceit, in all its wood-paneled glory.

The real action, of course, is in the public spaces, from the parade of models and actors in the lobby to La Bottega, the Italian bistro with its 10,000-square-foot terrace — the largest outdoor space in any New York hotel. Matsuri, downstairs, is an excellent Japanese restaurant.

Not just a boutique, not quite a luxury hotel, the Maritime occupies a middle ground all its own — one of New York's few “hip hotels,” yet with a level of service a bit higher than one would find at a flashier nightclub hotel. The neighborhood is one of the new centers of New York nightlife, and the Maritime benefits from its downtown location; most New York hotels are in stodgy midtown or the stuffy Upper East or West sides. One important fact: each room has, without exception, one queen bed — so travelers in need of twins must look elsewhere. But if you are on your own, or don't mind getting close to your companion, this is a fine hotel for mixing comfort and cool.

The Mercer
Located at the intersection of Mercer and Prince in SoHo, The Mercer hotel is New York's first loft hotel and captures the very essence of the area. Lofts are a uniquely SoHo phenomenon, pioneered by artists in the 1960s who took over the neighborhood's many abandoned warehouses. Loft living is about sunlight and leaving the original architecture intact, and at The Mercer, brickwork is exposed, windows are industry size, and iron support columns run from floor to ceiling. It's one of the few New York hotels to boast wooden floors, and Christian Liaigre's spare furnishings are appropriately unobtrusive, because, as your downtown designer friend might say, the beauty of a place is in its empty spaces. Morgans Hotel
Located in the once-grand neighborhood of Murray Hill, next to what used to be J.P. Morgan's New York mansion, Morgans looks turn-of-the-century grand from the outside, with its Beaux-Arts limestone facade, but inside is smaller and less intimidating than Morgans Hotel Group's other hotels. The lobby resembles a slightly updated but very tasteful mansion living room: leather armchairs, 1920s nickel lamps, and Parisian flea market cane tables. There's also an M.C. Escher carpet and Japanese paper screens; but the feeling is old-fashioned formal.

The rooms are stylish in a masculine way, but far from overwhelming. Bathrooms are modestly sized and tiled in black and white, while bedrooms are a calming caramel, ivory and pale gold. The fabrics provide an unexpected tingle — corduroy armchairs, suede banquettes and silk lampshades. There's even a cherry wood breakfast nook where you can nibble your croissant and scan Page Six.

Though the underground Morgans bar is quite the after-office hangout, it is incredibly dark, and therefore perfect for a clandestine rendezvous — but only if you can find your date. If you are hungry for a bit of outrageous style, eat upstairs at Asia de Cuba where you'll find massive expanses of white marble, the rather forbidding “communal” table, and a motel-style waterfall mural. The food is described as New York-innovative pan-Asian — sometimes dubious (like five spice foie gras with bananas), sometimes delicious, but always daring.

Morgans is proud to count execs-on-the-run among its fashionable clientele: after all, the midtown location makes it a perfect base for business travelers. But with only four to five rooms per floor Morgans is more intimate than the average business hotel. While the service may not be the in-your-face convenient that most execs demand, the staffers always make you feel right at home. Morgans is perfect for those with a bit of patience, who want a taste of New York, an exceedingly handsome atmosphere, but with just a bit of nostalgia for what they've left behind.

The Night Hotel
For anyone tired out by the unrelenting tackiness of the neon-lit Times Square, there’s an alternative, this one in basic black. The Night Hotel, a new addition on West 45th between Sixth and Seventh, is, adjusting for the neighborhood, the model of fashionable composure, from the monochrome checks of the lobby floor to the black-and-white Gothic chic of the perversely cozy bedrooms. And this being Times Square, of course, it’s ever so slightly over the top. This isn’t monochrome-as-minimalism, in a downtown style, but more a black velvet fantasy, a romantic evocation of a darker, more glamorous Gotham. It’s a smallish hotel, less than a hundred rooms, and like most New York hotel rooms, they’re not overly large. They are, however, well-appointed, with plasma TVs, iPod stereo systems, and generous creature comforts, including 400-thread-count Frette sheets and Molton Brown bath products, which probably matter more to the Night’s amorous clientele than, say, full-sized work desks — though the latter, one imagines, might find themselves drafted into improvised service too. There's a restaurant, called Nightlife (what else?) — though, to be fair, this being Manhattan, there’s a lot more nightlife to be had outside the hotel’s walls. Just don’t be surprised if you find all that colored light a little hard to take, after a night or two at the Night. Peninsula Hotel
Behind a century-old Beaux Arts facade right on the poshest stretch of Fifth Avenue lies the New York franchise of the phenomenal Hong Kong-based Peninsula Hotel. And if there’s anywhere in America that’s an appropriate spot for some mega-hospitality, Far East style, it’s this particular corner of midtown Manhattan, a stone’s throw from icons like Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall and Tiffany & Co.

Service is characteristically precise and efficient, whisking guests through the grand columned lobby and up to the spanking-new guest rooms, all contemporary elegance with Art Nouveau furnishings and a subtle Asian influence. Views are phenomenal—overlooking this stretch of Fifth Avenue one feels at the very center of the world—and the amenities are state-of-the-art, with high-tech entertainment systems, infinitely adjustable lighting, and deep soaking tubs with LCD televisions and bath-side control panels.

The Peninsula Spa and Health Club span three floors and some 35,000 square feet, with facilities to rival many a private athletic club. Particularly of note is the top-floor pool, offering almost unparalleled views of the midtown area.

The Plaza Athénée
It’s as though the whole boutique hotel thing never hapened. The Plaza Athénée is an Upper East Side classic, an anachronism in a New York where most of the action takes place downtown. Here the near-forgotten virtues of old-world hospitality are still practiced daily — most notably, service that’s at once hyper-attentive and ultra-discreet, the sort that makes lifelong regulars out of many guests.

Clearly, the Plaza Athénée is not for everyone — it’s not exactly easy on the budget, for one, and this sort of turn-of-the-last-century French style is a bit against the grain these days. But if you’re in the market for some old-fashioned luxury, this is your place; the rooms are oversized, the suites even more so (space being the greatest possible luxury in New York hotels), and all are done up in fine fabrics and come equipped with the works — ornate marble bathrooms, plush robes, and Belgian linens, for when Italian ones just aren’t fine enough.

Up here you’re far from the downtown nightlife, but if you’re staying here in the first place, you’re unlikely to care; Central Park is just an avenue away, and you’re within striking distance of the uptown museums as well as Barney’s and Bergdorf Goodman. Nightlife here, after a day on the town, means dinner at Arabelle and drinks at Bar Seine.

The Ritz-Carlton Battery Park
It’s hard to believe this is Manhattan. No other hotel in New York offers a view like this one, taking in the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and all of New York Harbor. Like everything in real estate, it’s down to location; in this case, Battery Park City, at the southern tip of Manhattan, so far downtown it’s not even downtown anymore. Then again, this hotel’s target demographic cares little for the downtown scene — what counts, in this case, is that Wall Street and the Financial District are just steps away.

This hotel dispenses with the usual manor-house theme of the Ritz-Carlton chain, instead outfitting itself in an updated Art Deco style, guest rooms trading frilly fabrics and plump antiques for clean lines, muted colors and spare, minimalist furnishings. Windows open to admit the harbor breeze and the marble baths come with separate showers and bathtubs, one welcome nod to the chain’s European philosophy. And all the familiar trappings of the Ritz-Carlton experience are available here, from the Bath Butler to British-style afternoon tea in the Lobby Lounge.

The 2 West restaurant is a French-inflected New York-style steakhouse, with an encyclopedic wine list and a stunning view of Battery Park and the Hudson through full-length windows. More spectacularly located, however, is Rise, the 14th-floor terrace bar overlooking the Statue of Liberty — this is the view that sold the Ritz-Carlton to the condominium owners on the floors above the hotel.

The Royalton
A lot has changed since the Royalton opened in 1988, both inside and outside its walls. This is arguably the original boutique hotel, having spawned a legion of imitators, many of which sought to duplicate the formula of stylish-enough bedrooms atop stunning public spaces — both, in the Royalton’s case, by Philippe Starck.

Now, after a much-touted remodel, most of what was Starck about the Royalton is gone, starting with the famous larger-than-life lobby. These days that sort of theatrical ostentation is out of style, and what’s in is the understated, clubby luxury look that you’ll see here. The palette is dark and masculine, full of brown leather and brown wood, and the atmosphere is more discreet than it used to be, more members-club than fashion-show.

The rooms have been updated as well, though perhaps more subtly — they’re oversized, light and airy, in contemporary neutral colors against a backdrop of mahogany paneling that’s calculated to put you in mind of a cabin in an old-fashioned steam liner. Bathrooms, though, go beyond what you’d see on a ship, or in many hotels for that matter; five-foot circular Roman baths are pure indulgence, and still a bold choice in a nation of showers.

And the place is still abuzz, albeit more quietly; the new Royalton is less stage set, more hotel. Brasserie 44, the new version of the Royalton’s restaurant, is the sort of place that stands on its own, as a restaurant — it’s run by John McDonald, from Lever House and Lure Fishbar, and it’s cozy and unpretentious, two things you can’t accuse most hotel restaurants of being. The Shoreham
It’s hard to get more old-school Manhattan than the Shoreham’s midtown location. On 55th between 5th and 6th it’s close by to the park, Rockefeller Center, Times Square and the theatre district, as well as some of be best upscale shopping in the world along 5th Avenue.

Until recently it had a classic Manhattan look to match, a sort of dramatic prewar Gotham style, which has since been traded in for something brighter and more contemporary — some rooms in warm tones with stainless-steel headboards, others in cool whites, with translucent backlit Shoji doors. It’s not exactly South Beach, but for New York, it’s surprisingly sunny.

Though the Shoreham is clearly a mid-price boutique, comforts are plentiful; rooms are spacious enough, this being Manhattan and all, and they pack in a fair bit of luxury. The penthouse suites are over-the-top, as penthouses tend to be, complete with outdoor terraces and jacuzzi tubs; even the standard rooms, though, come with pillow-top mattresses and highly functional modern marble and slate bathrooms. Along with the restaurant, serving world-spanning modern cuisines, and the Shoreham Bar, stylish in green silk and translucent glass, there’s a gallery and events space and even a small fitness center.

60 Thompson Hotel
Time was, a hotel’s life span was measured out in fractions of a century; now just staying around for the better part of a decade is a genuine achievement. Having opened towards the end of the early wave of downtown Manhattan boutique hotels, 60 Thompson, a few years in, can now rightly be called an established classic.

The location doesn’t hurt, down one of SoHo’s swankier streets, and the carefully art-directed interiors have aged well (which is to say they haven’t visibly aged at all, unlike some other high-design vaguely Eastern-influenced properties). The soaring loft-style guest rooms are as quintessentially downtown as they come, a little bit luxe and a little bit boutique, with high-end Italian linens, Dean & Deluca pantries (we used to call them minibars) and bathrooms that manage to be decadent and heavily marbled and yet stylish at the same time.

Of course the rooms aren’t the whole story. A place like this lives and dies by its public spaces, which, in this case, are impeccable, from the guests-and-VIPs-only rooftop lounge to the Kittichai restaurant, an upscale Thai kitchen overseen by a Spice Market alumnus. This is the luxury boutique as it ought to be — plush but not precious, hip but not off-putting, and an authentic fixture in the nightlife of lower Manhattan.

The Soho Grand
On the outside, with its cheery pink brick facade, the SoHo Grand resembles a brand-new shopping complex. But inside is a different story. Cast iron dogs stand guard at industrial design central — square lights, molded concrete walls, a coffee table the size of a grand piano. There's mesh wire glass everywhere, including on the writing desks in the rooms. The floors are the same stuff you see on New York sidewalks — corrugated steel for the elevators, and cast iron and glass for the stairs.

When it opened in 1996, the Grand was the first big SoHo hotel, and its downtown location has continued to be a major factor in its identity. Take the concierges, who can get you a reservation at the hottest underground restaurant and fill you in on the hippest goings-on. Here's where you'll find Tokyo urbanites in platforms, tough-talking London businessmen on their cells, lanky Nigerian models, many rock and roll musicians, and a lot of crazy hair.

It's easy for that much hipness to be intimidating, but the Grand, despite its name, is warm and happy. Maybe it's the pet friendly atmosphere — Fifi can munch on a biscuit at the bar while you drink your Tartini and you can even borrow a goldfish to keep you company through those long Manhattan nights. Or perhaps the fact that while it's undisputedly cool, the Grand is also curiously reminiscent of dormitory days, with its reupholstered sofas and signature dish of macaroni and cheese at the restaurant, Upstairs at The Grand.

The Soho House
No, it’s not in Soho, it’s in the Meatpacking District, the west-side warehouse neighborhood that’s suddenly found itself enjoying a second career as something of a dining and nightlife mecca. The Soho House name, rather, refers to its status as the New York chapter of the legendary London members club — the fact that it’s north of Houston is but a footnote.

So it’s a hotel, yes, but it’s a private club first. The waiting list for memberships, we’re assured, is miles long, but this being America, it is possible to buy your way in; hotel guests are members for the duration of their stay, with access to spaces that most locals can only daydream about.

The membership policy means Soho House doesn’t have to rely on challenging design to put off would-be trespassers. Here the interiors pointedly refer to New York loft apartments, with hardwood floors, brick walls and exposed ceiling beams, and the interior design is noticeably British in character, mixing as it does modern elements like stark egg-shaped tubs with updated versions of country-house antiques, like the occasional chandelier or an ornate headboard topping an otherwise perfectly Zen platform bed.

And here membership, however temporary, has its privileges, including 24-hour butler service, the Cowshed spa, and a rooftop pool with views over the Hudson and the West Village. You’re assured an in at the restaurant and bar, normally among New York’s hottest tickets, and a drawing room and games room round out the not-so-public public spaces, perfect for retiring from the always-on Meatpacking District scene.

Tribeca Hotel
Tribeca is one of Manhattan’s oddest blends, a district mixing the arty downtown cool of Soho with the big-money sheen of midtown, the spot where 19th-century cobblestones meet sleek industrial architecture, with a dash of bright light courtesy of the sun going down over the Hudson, and several of NYC's best restaurants. In comes the recently built Tribeca Grand, the only noteworthy hotel in the neighborhood. Distilling the essence of its surroundings, a commandable objective, took a few adjustments to the initial design but we are pleased to report that you will not be disappointed.

Downtown funk comes in the form of the brick and iron facade, and that natural light can’t fail to penetrate the wide glass roof of the eight-story atrium, making most other New York hotels feel gloomy and claustrophobic by comparison. Rooms are organized around the atrium and though far from huge, are large enough, and exquisitely designed, hyper-modern yet authentically calming in tones of cream and blue. High-speed internet and a work desk with a Herman Miller Aeron chair ensure you’ll get your work done. No shortage of luxuries, either, including Frette linens and robes and a selection of We Live Like This bath amenities, which you’ll surely want to liberate.

There’s a coffee nook on every floor, so you don’t have to brave the lobby scene before you’re looking one hundred percent—and it is a bit of a scene, to be honest. The Church Lounge, in the lobby, is an upmarket and in-demand bar and restaurant, intensely fashionable in the way only a few places in New York can be at one particular moment, with the kitchen open late enough to have saved many a carouser’s or jet-lagged guest’s life. Noise-damping technology ensures the sounds of revelry from down the bar won’t intrude on your sleep time, and there’s something to be said for the short trip from hot nightspot to hotel room, not to mention the Grand Sunday Brunch, which runs to three o’clock in consideration of the hardy souls who stayed up to see the bar close at the only-in-New-York hour of 4am.
