Lake Placid Lodge - A century ago, New York’s
beautiful people flocked to the Adirondacks in search of a
little bit of the sublime; Manhattan was full up, Connecticut
and Rhode Island were passé, and wealthy Americans were in love
with nature again. More recently, jet travel has dispersed the
rich and famous across the globe—but the onetime holiday
destination of Carnegies and Morgans has lost little of its
charm. Situated on the quiet western shore of Lake Placid, the Lodge is vintage Adirondack, at least in style. A central lodge and nineteen private cabins huddle at the water’s edge, decorated with rustic pine beams and reproduction furniture (for sale, by the way, should you take a liking to the style). Stone fireplaces, overflowing feather beds and deep soaking tubs bring the creature comforts, and home-baked cookies at turndown will make you wish summer camp was this luxurious. There are no televisions, though the better rooms look out over the lake through picture windows; guests here commune with nature rather than CNN. Outdoor activities range from boating to snowshoeing, depending upon the season, and golf and tennis await the traditionalists. Some six million acres of woodland await explorers, and the lake invites quiet contemplation. And naturally the cuisine is worlds away from simple camp food. The Lodge’s chefs are trained in England before being set loose on American shores—which sounds to us rather like a golfer warming up with a weighted club. Nevertheless, they do come out swinging, with dishes like wild king salmon and roast magret of duck replacing whatever Blighty concoctions they trained with; suffice to say the results may in themselves be worth the drive from New York or Boston. |
