Sofitel
Often a new city hotel has to
settle for adapting an existing building, shoehorning modern
interior design into a prewar skyscraper or hiding boutique
flash behind an unassuming facade. Not so the Sofitel Water
Tower. Architect Jean-Paul Viguier was allowed to start from
scratch, and the result is striking — a dramatic bright white
wedge-shaped building that looks for all the world like a giant
icebreaking ship cutting its way across Chicago.
The inverted wedge shape,
while arresting enough from the outside, has a delightful effect
on the interiors as well — guest rooms on the underside of the
wedge protrude out over the sidewalk, allowing a unique view
straight down onto the street.
Of course in some chain
hotels one would prefer to look out the window, rather than

Burnham Hotel -
Calling all architecture
junkies: the Burnham may just be the hotel of your dreams. Built
in 1895 by the famed partnership of Daniel Burnham, Charles
Atwood, and John Welborn Root, it was a building ahead of its
time. Sixteen stainless steel stories high, the then-called
Reliant was one of the country’s first skyscrapers. But the
Reliance building, as it was then known, was more than just
original, it was beautiful, flamboyant with its dazzling facade
of glazed white terracotta and glass and more windows than any
other Chicago building would dare to use for the next century.
The restoration of the
Reliance was definitely a labor of love. The original terrazzo
floors have been restored, as have the cast iron decorative
staircases. The terracotta has been cleaned, repaired, and
polished to a high shine. The office doors of mahogany and
Florentine glass now guard every guestroom. But most
impressively, they have rebuilt the original two-story-high
storefront according to architect Root’s drawings (the original
front was destroyed in 1900).
When the refurbished and
re-dubbed Hotel Burnham finally opened, it was the first with
real character on the central Loop. For culture freaks, there
are the three major theatres next door. For the more materially
minded, Marshall Fields is across the street. Inside is like a
1930s gentleman’s club—a touch of Al Capone in the burgundy
lobby, with its leather chairs and fireplace, where free coffee
is served in the morning, and wine and cheese at night. The gold
and lapis bedrooms have kitsch touches like marvelously
ostentatious Art Deco mirrors, paintings with their subjects in
naughty poses, and beds canopied in gold tissue. The velvet
headboards are printed with the same quatrefoil designs that are
carved into the building’s facade.
The food at its restaurant,
the Atwood, meanwhile is unpretentious Chicago comfort food—pot
pie, mussels and pork chops. Overall, the Burnham is confident,
old-style Chicago. It’s grand, cozy, unpretentious, and in a
building so spectacular it doesn’t have to worry about being
cool. Another bonus that you won’t find in many hotels these
days: you get to open the door to your room with a real metal
key.

Hotel
Monaco - Chicago’s Hotel Monaco may be
perfectly located for business travelers, but this hotel’s
atmosphere is anything but buttoned-up. Most business hotels aim
for inoffensive and land somewhere between bland and charmless—the
Monaco, in contrast, heaps on the Art Deco kitsch with a shovel,
decorating guest rooms in bold stripes and heavy, theatrical
desks and armoires; and even if Deco isn’t your bag, you’ve got
to applaud them for the effort.
It’s not just the décor,
though, it’s thoughtful touches like the cushioned ‘meditation
stations’ in the window nooks, or the extremely liberal pet
policy—and if you’re envious of the travelers who brought their
animal companions, the hotel will install a goldfish in your
room for the duration of your stay. Corn-fed Midwesterners (and
the Dutch) can request “Tall Rooms,” with nine-foot king beds
and extra-high showerheads. And the service, though efficient,
is anything but formal.
Hotel Monaco offers a full
range of business services, from internet access and laptop
safes to meeting facilities, as well as easy access to the Loop
financial district. Shoppers will care more about the proximity
to the department stores of North Michigan Avenue, and the
neighborhood is packed with restaurants and theaters. You’ll
return from dinner to find your goldfish fed and the bed turned
down with kid’s candy replacing gourmet chocolates, and you’ll
be happy you didn’t book one of the serious business hotels.

Hotel
Sax Chicago - For fans of
old-fashioned luxury hotels, Chicago offers no end of
options; many of the city’s hotels feel like throwbacks
to Chicago’s glory days as the business-and-industry
capital of the Middle West. For the rest of us, however,
Hotel Sax Chicago is a bit of a welcome departure, with
soft, light colors and a clean-lined, almost European
look taking the place of the mahogany and marble
bathrooms of the classic business hotel.
Cabin rooms are on
the cozy side, and will be familiar to boutique hotel
connoisseurs — a queen bed, a flat-panel television, and
just enough room to spread out a bit. From there they
just get bigger and bigger, on up to the junior suites
with their king beds and dual HDTVs, and the one-bedroom
suites with sleeper sofas.
And the location is
quite possibly Hotel Sax’s greatest strength: the Marina
City complex, right on the Chicago River, is home to the
legendary House of Blues as well as a number of bars and
restaurants and even a bowling alley — which if you’ve
never considered as a viable night-out option you’re in
for a pleasant surprise. Chicago is a gourmand’s
paradise, and everything from upscale steakhouses to
classic street sausages is within easy reach — get a
guest pass to the Crunch gym next door if you feel you
may have overindulged.

James
Chicago - Something richer than
the average boutique, and more stylish than the typical
luxury hotel — that’s the idea behind the James. The
flagship in what’s to be a new chain, the James Chicago
is actually the fledgling company’s second effort — the
prototype, in Arizona, was sold to Morgans and is now
the Mondrian Scottsdale.
Maybe it’s lessons
learned from the first try, or just the fact that a
first-tier city demands a first-class hotel, but this
one, it must be said, comes off as a highly polished
affair. The look is significantly more dressed-up than
one might expect in Chicago, a town which despite its
architectural pedigree still draws a large share of its
travelers from Middle America. The rooms are swanky, in
a restrained way, furnished with familiar designer
pieces and rescued from the edge of minimalist boredom
by an edge of decadence — vast TV screens, rich fabrics,
top-flight entertainment centers and lush modern
spa-style bathrooms.
A steakhouse is just
about as quintessentially Chicagoan as a restaurant can
get — the James features David Burke’s Primehouse,
serving Kentucky-raised beef dry-aged on the premises.
There’s a small spa downstairs, and an extensive fitness
center, the latter down to the fact that one of the
James’s founding partners also founded the Equinox
fitness clubs. And no urban design hotel would be caught
dead without something like the J Bar, a stylish and
reasonably exclusive cocktail lounge where hotel guests
mix with some of the more discerning locals.

Peninsula
Hotel - In the middle of Chicago’s
Magnificent Mile of department stores and designer boutiques is
the Peninsula Hotel, only the third in America. The Peninsula’s
brand of Hong Kong luxury has fared well in New York and LA, but
in the heartland?
Any doubts are immediately
laid to rest by the uniformed bellboys, spiriting guests’ bags
to the lobby before the cab driver can lay a hand on them. Other
staffers seem possessed of a psychic ability to remember every
guest’s name at once, a delightful contrast to the typically
American nod-and-smile.
The lobby is spacious and
grand, located five floors up, above a retail concourse—another
detail that’s more Far East than Midwest. Rooms are elegant as
well, with flat-screen televisions, broadband internet, and
messages thoughtfully delivered via a near-silent fax machine
hidden in a desk drawer. Control panels by the bedside and in
the bathroom allow complete control of the climate, the
lighting, even the curtains.
Shanghai Terrace is one of
Chicago’s top Chinese restaurants, and, true to its name, offers
outdoor seating with a view of the Miracle Mile. The lobby
lounge is an impressive space, lit by twenty-foot-high windows,
and the bar, in contrast, is intimate and low-lit, with a
roaring fireplace and a surprisingly hip crowd. Spa and fitness
facilities are first-class, as is the location—neighbors include
the Ritz-Carlton, the Water Tower, and the Drake.

The Raffaello Hotel
- There’s something about
Chicago that just feels more businesslike than America’s other
big cities — though surely New York and LA, at least, are the
greater economic centers, there’s a feeling in Chicago that this
is where the country’s work is really getting done. And this
feeling carries over into the hotels — even the city’s boutiques
seem to be made for styled-up business travel rather than
