One of the best books I have ever used for traveling through the islands of Hawaii is Hidden Hawaii. Check this book out as it is filled with wonderful information on the islands. I am sure it will become one of your favorites. I even recommend it for folks who live in Hawaii!
Click on Honolulu, Kauai, and Maui for travel guides, brochures, and money savers to help you plan your visit to these Hawaii. Area Travel Packets was created to help travelers get the most out of popular destination and to help them plan their vacations ahead of time.
| A great way to get good travel information is to check with folks who know a lot about the area in which you plan to visit. I recommend that after you get the general information you are seeking about all of the islands of Hawaii, you check with Allexperts for specific information about the places you plan to visit. It is a great site! Allexperts - Hawaii! Ask volunteer experts questions about travel and tourism, and attractions for free! Climate and Weather Information
When it comes to the climate of Hawaii, the ancient Hawaiians distinguished between two seasons which the called kau (summer) and hooilo (winter) kau being from about May to October. About the only difference between the two is that the temperatures are slightly higher in the summer and the winter brings a few more variable winds and a bit cooler weather. However, anytime of the year is the perfect time to visit Hawaii!
You will see a few more showers during the winter season, particularly from December to March, but many of them last only a few minutes and will probably not destroy your day. However, as with anywhere, there are times when the weather will set in for several days and the streets will become awash. So, you may want to check ahead.
One of the best things about having bad weather in the islands is that, with the exception when there is one of those winter storms that seems to linger for days, you can normally just move a bit and get out of the rain as it seems the rain is normally pretty much located in a small area with rain showers moving in and out of an area. So if it is raining where you are - move. Try going somewhere else to find sunny weather!

Driving Information - Getting To and Around

All of the islands are great for driving. If you want to visit them all my suggestion would be for you to make one island your "home away from home" with a hotel or resort you like. Then you can island-hop by flying out in the early morning to a different island, have a rental car waiting for you, spend the day exploring that island, and then return your rental car to the airport and fly back "home" for the night heading for a different island in the morning.. Another good way to do this is fly into Oahu for a couple of nights with a reservation there for the last night you plan to stay in Hawaii. Then make reservations for two or three of the other islands for one or two nights - say the big island of Hawaii for two nights, the island of Kauai for a night, and Maui for a couple of nights. Make all of your rental car and air travel arrangements and do your island hopping a little more leisurely. You will find most of the major rental car agencies along with a lot of local car rental places on all of the islands. These agencies compete with each other in price and quality of service so you will want to shop around. Rates fluctuate with the season. Also, other than on the island of Lanai where one can sometimes come in handy (However, a car will do you just nicely there.), I would not recommend renting a jeep no matter what the ads seem to state. They are a lot more expensive and not nearly as comfortable as an automobile. |
