Visitor Information on Maui

Maui is a vacation paradise that is fast becoming much too "busy" in many areas. However, there is still enough of the old charm remaining to make this a great place to see the history of the islands. It is also a good vacation destination as there are so many excellent resort properties on the island. There is also a lot of very scenic areas in Maui including the road along Haleakala's lower slopes. This is a great island to pick up a rental car and do some exploring on your own. For more information, contact the Maui Visitors Bureau. 800.525.MAUI. www.visitmaui.com

The island of Maui has a number of micro-climates being generally drier on the leeward side, and wetter windward. You will find it cooler upcountry and warmer along the coast. Winter is generally November through April with temperatures typically ranging in the low-70s to the mid-80s. During the summer the temperatures can run into the low-90s. The sun here is strong so you will want to be sure to apply sunscreen, wear sunglasses and a hat.

Haleakala Crater

Crater & Rainforest Adventure - Your journey begins when Temptation Tours picks you up in one of their luxury Limo-Vans and takes you to Paia Plantation  for a delightful continental breakfast. After breakfast, travel to the summit of the dormant 10,023-foot Haleakala Crater. It is typically about 30 degrees cooler at the summit than at sea level, so bring a sweater! From here youll descend to Hosmers Grove, a conifer forest. Here, you will find rare native Hawaiian birds nesting among the spectacular trees. Next the tour will descend further down the mountain to visit an exotic Protea Farm, where you will find beautiful and unusual plants that are native to the Valley of the Moon in Africa amazingly, this section of Maui shares the same climate and volcanic soil conditions as that part of Africa. Moving on, you will visit the paniolo (cowboy) town of Makawao. After an upcountry lunch, youll head East through Haiku, where the grass is always a beautiful emerald green.  View bountiful groves of avocado, citrus, banana, papaya, mango and exotic tropical flowers.  After leaving Haiku, youll take a stop for a swim at a beautiful waterfall. Then youre off to Keanae Peninsula, which is a little tongue of lava jutting right out into the ocean. Keanae is a traditional Hawaiian farming community in which little has changed in the past 500 years. Finally, photo opportunities abound as you visit Hookup Beach Park, the windsurfing capitol of the world. For additional information or reservations, click on Crater & Rainforest Adventure.

Hana

Maui Hiking Tour - Cave Quest  - Your journey begins with a convenient pick-up at your hotel. A quick stop is made in the town of Paia for a continental breakfast. Then, enjoy the relaxed Maui-Style pace as you cruise in comfort to the remote Hana Coast. One of the many highlights of this tour is the opportunity to hike Kaeleku Cavern. This enormous subterranean lava tube resembles a chocolate-colored lava cathedral cave, frozen in time forever.  Walk beneath the dense tropical rain forest of Hana through Peles famous underground passage.  Discover elephants foot stalactites, mounds of chocolate colored lava drops and souffl like lava swirls that were formed over 30,000 years ago.  You'll also view one of the worlds tallest stalagmites, towering 30 feet and protected by the Ancient Guardian of the Cave whose face is naturally etched forever, high above the lava sidewall. The Goddess of Fire even dropped in a huge skylight to help you see all her unique lava formations.

After exploring, youll enjoy a scrumptious beachside picnic lunch, elegantly served on white linen tablecloths and crystalline plates at picturesque Waianapanapa State Park or scenic Hana Bay Beach Park.  Lunch includes hors doeuvres, snowflake rolls, fresh fruit, garden salad, rainbow pasta salad, smoked chicken, dessert and soft drinks.  After lunch, you may choose to swim in a rain-water pool at the base of a picturesque waterfall, or at a beautiful black sand beach - youll have plenty of time to stroll, swim, sunbathe, relax and enjoy! For additional information or reservations, click on Cave Quest

Temptation Tours Cave Quest - Hana Coast

Dining Suggestions on Maui
A favorite in Kahului is Mickey's where you will probably find mostly locals. Try a combination of fish and beef. Rather pricey, but they have an early-bird menu.

For good budget meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) try Cafe Kup a Kuppa on Church Street in Wailuku.

For some good Thai food try either Siam Thai Cuisine or Saeng's Thai Cuisine. Both are in Wailuku. Ma-Chan's Of Maui in Kahului is very good for Asian food and the price is right.

How do you get out of paying full price for your meal at a restaurant without having to scrub dishes? Simple, just buy Restaurant.com Dining Certificates. Locate a restaurant close to where  you are at Restaurant.com

The Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary on Route 32 near Kahului.

One of the things I really enjoy is watching a movie that takes place somewhere I have traveled. It is really neat to watch a movie and be able to say, "I ate in that restaurant," or "I walked down that street." Netflix has more movies than anyone, including over 6,000 documentaries. And, with their very competitive pricing, watching a movie in the comfort of your own home is really inexpensive -- especially when you don't have to pay so much for the popcorn!
