Crossroads  4-D Fun

The Tall Tales of the Southsm 4-D Theater brings unexpected sensations to creative 3-D imagery as a Southern grandfather teaches his grandchildren the art of storytelling. Viewed through special glasses, a frog’s tongue is the first element to stretch into the movie audience from its perch on a swamp log. Each screening of the 12-minute film tickles the senses with special lighting, wind, falling rain and aromas from hot chocolate to a wandering skunk.

Actors featured in the film are Danny Nelson of Elijay, Georgia and as his grandchildren, Cody Newton of Buffalo, South Carolina and Carrie-Rose Menocal of Miami, Florida.

Animal stars include a bloodhound, an eight-foot pattern less python, a skunk and a six-foot alligator. Animated frogs and bees abound.

Few people in the film industry know more about the technique of 3-D filming, using large format twin 65-mm cameras than highly acclaimed Disney veteran Director of Photography, Peter Anderson. His dozens of feature film credits range from The Deerhunter to Roger Rabbit. His theme park and special film projects include Honey, I Shrunk the Audience and Space Mountain Finale for Disney as well as the Universal Studio Tour’s Effects Stage. His numerous television credits include Max Headroom, Battlestar Galactica and Hill Street Blues. He has headed up the film technology development at various times for Universal Studios and Walt Disney Studios.

Director Keith Melton, A.M.P.A.S., L.F.C.A. has more than 30 films to his credit, including Cirque du Soleil: Journey of Man (2000), a 3-D IMAX film, License to Thrill, The Texas Adventure for the Alamo, and Haunts of The Olde Country, an award winning 70mm 3-D film for Iwerks and Busch Entertainment.

Camera Operator Paul Babin has worked with Stephen Spielberg, Francis Copolla, James Cameron, Gary Marshall, Peter Weir and Barry Levison.

Lisa Smith is Executive Producer and Ben Kupfer is producer of Tall Tales of the SouthSM.

The storytelling focus is intentional. Throughout Stone Mountain Park storytellers share their southern heritage by offering up history, anecdotes and old-fashioned tall tales

3-D filming is extremely different from filming a typical feature film as it requires four times the amount of lighting to achieve the correct look for a nighttime scene because of the number of filters needed for these special cameras.
