City and Destination Information St. Simons Island has long been a popular vacation destination. There is evidence that even before the white man settled in the area, native Americans shared the rich bounty of this island several hundred years ago. They were here when Oglethorpe arrived from England to settle Georgia as the 13th colony in 1733. The island looks much the same today with moss-draped oaks, shady lanes and marshlands. It is a thriving habitat for birds and a diverse range of other wildlife, from turtles to armadillo and deer. This is a great family vacation destination.
