Return to Westville

Stewart County Academy

Your travel source with a personal touch!

Built to house the County Academy in Stewart in 1832, this building is typical of the schools of the middle 1800s. The view at the right shows the back of the building as you walk up Troup Street.

Just behind the academy you will find where you may board a mule-pulled wagon if you opt to see the building of the town by wagon instead of on foot. However, this will only give you a view of the outside of the buildings and you will really want to see the inside of the buildings to really see what life was like in 1850.

After the building ceased to used as an academy, it was owned by the F&AM Cross Lodge No. 1973. The lodge gave the building to Westville.

Although the interior furnishings are not original to the building, in keeping with the spirit of Westville in that everything must date from 1850 or before, the benches are from a similar school of the period that was in Eufaula, Alabama.

The bookcase has books that were typical of textbooks that were used in such schools prior to 1850.
