City and Destination Information A visit to this little town in Northwest Georgia is a must for anyone who loves history, antiquing and good food! Adairsville, nestled in the Oothcalooga Valley, was the first Georgia town to be listed in its entirety on the National Register of Historic Places. The town was named in honor of Chief John Adair, a Scottish settler who married a Cherokee Indian girl. The railroad which lies at the center of town was central to its development. Adairsville was a terminus of the Western & Atlantic Railroad with machine shops, munitions warehouses, and a roundhouse. The depot was completed in 1847 and Adairsville grew quickly as mills, blacksmiths and hotels opened around the town square. The Civil War brought much action to Adairsville as the
location of the Great Locomotive Chase. The Chase
is probably the war's best known escapade and was made famous by a Walt Disney movie of
the same name. Today, visitors can see the original depot which witnessed the
pursuit of the steam locomotive General. If you have something you believe should be added to this section of Getting Away, please contact Jim at Getting Away. mailto:jimbruner@gettingaway.com

Oothcalooga Baptist Church is located in the northern part of Bartow County. In 1835 the Oothcalooga Baptist Church was established in Cass County, which later became Bartow County. In 1887 a fraction of that Church was granted permission to form another church, which was named Oothcalooga Valley Church. In 1892 the Valley was dropped from the name. Oothcalooga means Peaceful Valley. We welcome you to worship with us when you are visiting the area. P.O. Box
