I have had a lot of enjoyable times in Florida, both as a visitor and as a resident.
I have done most of the "vacation stuff" along with living there for a while near the Jacksonville area in Atlantic Beach. Florida makes an excellent family vacation destination as well as a vacation area for couples and singles. There is a lot to
do and see in this state - and a lot more to the state than the beach areas or the theme parks around Orlando. This page should give you several excellent
vacation ideas. |

Climate and Weather Information
Florida is one of those places that is warm and sunny (When it is not raining - and no, I am not trying to be funny. I have never been anywhere where it can be a wonderful, sunny day one minute; you can be in the midst of a violent storm, or a gentle rain the next minute; and then right back to warm, sunny, and wonderful again the next!), almost the year around. Evenings are often chilly in the winter so a sweater or light jacket is recommended - even as far south as the Keys. And, during the summer months, it can be very hot and humid in the southern areas of the state.
The hurricane season is normally from June through October with some of the areas in the south susceptible to a storm once in about every 4 years and the rest of the state about every 6 to 8 years. Contact the National Hurricane Center in Miami (National Hurricane Center) for additional information or warnings.

Driving Information
Florida has an excellent system of roads that are very well maintained. Along with the main north/south and east/west interstate of I-75 and 95 (north/south) and I-4 and 10 (east/west), there are hundreds of miles of double, divided highways.

Some Favorites in Florida
Flagler Beach
Martin's in Flagler Beach has been recommended by Getting Away visitor Lisa from Douglasville, Georgia. "Best prime rib for the least amount of money." states Lisa. Thanks Lisa.
Jacksonville Area
Homestead Restaurant Located in Jacksonville Beach is one of my favorite places for fried chicken. If you go on Sunday, better get their early. Ask to sit on the porch.
LTD Barbecue Great barbecue served on garlic toast. You should also try the fried Squash! Located in Jacksonville Beach.
Silver Springs
I really enjoy visiting this old tourist park in Florida. Perhaps
you will also. Just click on Welcome to Silver
Springs for all of the information.
Orlando Area
Church Street Station in Orlando
(Church Street Station) Church Street Station I especially enjoy the restaurants here and just walking around in the late afternoon and evening. A great break after the theme parks!
Walt Disney World (Walt Disney World)
I still enjoy Walt Disney World. I guess I will never grow up. My favorite area is EPCOT where I can have breakfast, lunch, and dinner in different "countries" walking from one to the other. Almost better than Europe!
Pompano Beach
Getting Away visitor Kathy from Freehold, New Jersey states that the Seaside Beach Club is a great place to stay. "We enjoyed our stay and the accommodations suited us fine. The condos were equipped with full kitchens and one or two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and all appliances. There were two pools on site and the beach is just a few steps away." Thanks Kathy.
