Dog Island
The island is partly sheltering St. George Sound
and Apalachicola Bay. It's the eastern-most part of a chain of barrier
islands located off the northern panhandle of Florida just offshore from
where the Crooked River
merges into the Carrabelle River
and then into St. George. This island is small and only accessible by
boat, ferry or airplane. The Nature Conservancy owns most of the island,
while some parts are privately owned residential property.
The island was discovered by the French in 1536 and
named because wild dogs were found on them, the islands resemble a
crouched dog, or perhaps, because the early ships put their common
sailors - known as dogs - on the islands before docking on the mainland
so they could not jump ship. Later, the two neighbors were renamed: St.
Vincent, which is a Federal wildlife refuge, and St. George, which has a
causeway and is, naturally, a booming resort community. Indians used Dog
Island as a fishing camp, and the 1985 hurricanes uncovered pot shards
found on the west end. After World War II, Jeff Lewis, a Florida
businessman, saw its potential as a vacation area and paid $12,000 for
the island.

National Park
Everglades National Park is the only subtropical preserve in North America.
It contains both temperate and tropical plant communities, including sawgrass
prairies, mangrove and cypress swamps, pinelands, and hardwood hammocks, as well
as marine and estuarine environments. The park is known for its rich bird life,
particularly large wading birds, such as the roseate spoonbill, wood stork,
great blue heron and a variety of egrets. It is also the only place in the world
where alligators and crocodiles exist side by side. Click on The

Taking its name from the
Stumpknocker, a fish that has loon been a part of Southern fishing lore,
Stumpknockers on the River in Inverness is one of those great places in
Florida for seafood. I'll admit that from the outside it doesn't seem to be
much, but the food served is great. You can find everything from Gator
Nuggets for an appetizer to fresh baked pies for desert. In between there is
everything from catfish to shellfish to great ocean and freshwater seafood.
And, if you are not into seafood, you can enjoy steaks, including their
famous "Gator Steak." Stumpknockers is located on west Main Street in
Inverness, and at their river location on SW State Road 200 at the
