Return to Cities in Connecticut
City and Destination Information The following was taken from the website for the city of New Haven. Additional information can be found on their website at http://www.cityofnewhaven.com. New Haven, Connecticut, is a city that combines New England charm with a robust cosmopolitan life, alive with world-class architecture and memorable international cuisine. Located on Long Island Sound between New York and Boston, Greater New Haven fans out from an historic city center and harbor to scenic beaches and charming town greens. The city itself is a cornucopia of cultural riches in the performing and visual arts and outstanding educational opportunities, including Yale University, one of the most prestigious institutions in the world. Established 358 years ago by English Puritans, New Haven eventually became home to people of many nationalities and ethnic groups, including Irish, Germans, Jews, Italians, African-Americans, Latinos and Asians. Today the city's neighborhoods, fairs, festivals and historical societies preserve the traditions and flavors of New Haven's broad cultural heritage. In the summer of 1995, New Haven received international attention as the host of the Special Olympics World Games. In June 1996, the first annual International Festival of Arts and Ideas drew 60,000 people to the city. In June 1997, the second International Festival of Arts and Ideas attracted 82,000 people to its events. Let us extend this same hospitality to you. With this pocket electronic guide, learn about things to do and places to go in and around the "Elm City."
