City and Destination Information

The following information was taken from the website of the Durango Area Tourism Office. Additional information about Durango and the surrounding area can be found at www.durango.org.

Established in 1881 when the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad decided to build a track to Silverton and established Durango as the hub of its rail system to transport ore from the mountains to smelters in Durango.

Many of the original buildings constructed by Durango's pioneers are still in use today. They can be seen in the historic districts of Third Avenue and Main Avenue. Rio Grande Land, located at the far southern end of Main, contains the restored depot built in 1881. The Strater Hotel, built in 1887, and a reflection of the town's prosperity, remains a central attraction in downtown Durango.

Mesa Verde National Park located 37 miles west of Durango, is known for its outstanding examples of Anasazi cliff dwellings and artifacts. An important part of the area's history, it was named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations World Heritage Committee.

By car, Durango area can be reached via U.S. Highway 550, which provides a route to Grand Junction, Colorado to the north, and Farmington, New Mexico to the south. U.S. Highway 160 connects Durango near Flagstaff, Arizona to the west and near Pueblo, Colorado via Interstate 25 to the east.

Things to See and Do
The Durango Soaring Club (http://www.soardurango.com) has been treating passengers to the thrill of silent flight since 1976. Sailplanes are towed aloft to a pre-selected altitude and then released. As you soar like an eagle back to the gliderport, you will be able to see the beautiful San Juan Mountains, plus the Animas River winding through the valley and (on a clear day) 100 miles of scenery in any direction. Durango Soaring Club, Inc. Located at Val-Air Gliderport 3 Miles North of Durango on Highway 550. 27290 US Highway 550 North, Durango, Colorado 81301. 970-247-9037 info@soardurango.com. Open 7 Days a Week 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM, May - October. (Please call for exact dates). Reservations Strongly Recommended.

I strongly recommend taking a ride in one of their gliders. Especially if you have never been up in a glider before. Jim.
