Ritz-Carlton

Not quite what you’d
picture from Ritz-Carlton, is it? Of course the
Beaux-Arts style one is accustomed to seeing from their
urban hotels would look a bit out of place at the foot
of Beaver Creek Mountain, in the Bachelor Gulch gated
community. The look is a sort of pastiche of Rocky
Mountain national park lodges, and while it’s just an
exterior, it sets the tone: this is a place where no
expense has been spared in crafting a relentlessly
high-end guest experience.
A word about the
location: once you’re there Beaver Creek is its own
mountain, its own town, its own distinct location — but
when you’re planning your trip it’s actually so close to
Vail that if walking access to the shops and restaurants
at Vail Village isn’t important to you, then it may as
well be Vail. Ski both on
successive days if you like, it’s just a few minutes’
drive from one to the other.
The main difference
is that Beaver Creek is more remote, more isolated,
feels more exclusive, and the Ritz-Carlton fits in
perfectly. Your rooms are plush and state-of-the-art
(especially the new Residential Suites, which are almost
surely better-equipped than your house and possibly
bigger too), the facilities are comprehensive and
immaculately maintained, and a Spago franchise counts
among the restaurants. You’re not isolated by geography
— there’s plenty to do up and down the valley — but with
the pools, saunas, fitness center, and the absolutely
vast grotto-style spa, there’s no need to leave the
grounds at all. Except for all the skiing and general
outdoorsiness, one supposes.
