The Ambrose
The Ambrose is more than a mile inland, leaving the beach to the high rollers, who inflate their prices accordingly. Here you’ll find that it is possible to get an excellent room in Santa Monica, at a charming little boutique, for about the price one would expect from a dreary chain motel—as long as you don’t have to be right in the thick of the action.

Then again, stay here and you’ll find the thick of the action is a relative concept—the Ambrose is quite close enough to anything that matters, whether the Third Street promenade or various business destinations like MTV and Sony. And this is no bargain-basement hotel; the Arts and Crafts decor is satisfying enough, and some of the services are in the same league as the big boys, 24-hour room service, and, best of all, plentiful parking. Remember that nobody walks, except on the Promenade or the boardwalk; the hotel has its own London-style black cab for short trips.

Hotel Casa del Mar
If you believe in karma, then the Casa del Mar has paid its dues. In the 1920s Santa Monica was the place to party, and the Club Casa del Mar was the hotspot — at least for silver screeners like Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford. Built for two million, a then unheard of sum, it was where stars went to indulge their taste for the illegal. It had the best gambling, and far and away (remember, this was during Prohibition) the best cocktails. It had a “special” relationship with the police, who would warn them before a raid, giving them enough time to tuck away the slot machines and floating bottles of gin. This would all change in World War II, when the building was used for military housing, and subsequently, as the headquarters for the infamous drying-out clinic (and some say cult) Synanon. The Casa went from vice supplier to vice stopper.

In 1999 the Casa itself was rehabilitated by the owners of the neighboring Shutters on the Beach. But whereas Shutters is contemporary, unpretentious comfort, Casa is high Regency with tear-drop chandeliers, floor-to-ceiling windows and potted palms. The floors are marble and the curtains are beaten gold silk. Many visitors, in fact, are taken aback by the East Coast nature of its appearance — a Hudson River or Newport mansion dropped accidentally on the California beach. But even the Astors didn't have a bathroom to rival the Casa's. Tubs have 42 jets and the showers are large enough to host a tea party. The bathrooms are arguably the highlight of the Casa rooms, which are all decorated with the same apricot-and-paisley motif.

The Little Prince by your bed, teddy bear on your pillow, and a rubber ducky in your bath are a little strange for us, but no doubt a delight for the young at heart. But downstairs, the Casa del Mar is just as it was in the old days. The bar hops with the media and fashion crush, and elegantly coiffed, swan-like muses exchange air kisses over flutes of champagne. And for those particularly hard to impress there is the original 1926 building itself, which, with its several storied bay windows, and ballroom that opens onto the beach, is most marvelous indeed.

Hotel Oceana Santa Monica
There’s a case to be made that the popular image of LA has it all wrong. It’s a vast, sprawling, crowded city, in most places hardly the oasis of mellowness it’s commonly suspected of being. Santa Monica, however, is exactly that oasis of mellowness — it’s got the beach, the pier, the promenade, and it’s got hotels like the newly-refurbished all-suite Oceana.

Here, unlike a lot of urban boutique hotels, you’ll find nothing edgy at all. Colors are sunny and soft, the interiors homey and contemporary, and small comforts are plentiful: huge plasma televisions, plush robes, classic marble bathrooms. Some suites come with balconies facing the Pacific and jacuzzi tubs, and some include work areas and/or well-stocked kitchens; all are spacious bordering upon palatial.

There’s a pool in the courtyard, and the beach is just across the road, something that’s not true of all that many LA-area hotels. On site is the Ocean Lounge restaurant, as well as a fitness center and spa — and nearby is Main Street Santa Monica, as well as the Third Street Promenade, where you’ll find more shops and restaurants than you know what to do with. If it’s edgy and urban you’re after, we know a rooftop hotel bar in downtown LA that’s got your name on it. But if it’s chilled-out Southern California relaxation you’re looking for, you need look no further.

The Huntley Hotel
In years past this glorious location, a block from Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade and two blocks from the beach, was wasted on one of those boring old corporate hotels — or, truth be told, the location very nearly elevated a chain hotel into something special. Now, in a new life as the Huntley, it’s aiming a bit higher — Santa Monica lacks a truly definitive hipster boutique hotel, and that’s the void the Huntley is trying to fill.

With no little success, we might add. The Penthouse restaurant and bar are pretty reliably packed, not just for the food but for the atmosphere as well — the look is upscale retro-lounge, and private cabanas (sans pool) lend restaurant and bar tables a private-party vibe. It’s the work of the local designer Thomas Shoos, the man behind several of Santa Monica’s better restaurants, and the hotel’s other public spaces (and, to some extent, the rooms) bear his mark as well.

These days, of course, a popular nightspot alone does not a successful hotel make. Fortunately the Huntley’s rooms are anything but an afterthought. Though compact, they’re comfortable and well-equipped, with the luxuries that matter: pillow-top beds, fine Italian linens, 42-inch plasma screens, and top-shelf bath products. Views of the city are none too shabby, and those of the beach and coastline are even better — book the Shoos-designed suites to make the most of the views, the space, and the extras (open soaking tubs, we’re looking at you).

Shutters on the Beach
Some call Shutters on the Beach the most comfortable hotel in the world — and they may be right. It's just the perfect mix of that Deco glamour, old world coziness and modern LA laissez-faire, but it also has a lot of what the modern traveler wants — quiet.

Though we all like to be near the buzz, sometimes we don't want to feel like we're smack in the center, and Shutters on the Beach, which is invisible from the road, is that perfect paradox: an urban hotel that feels like a resort. For a long time, it was the only beachfront hotel in Santa Monica — or in all of LA, for that matter. And due to some marvel in modern architecture, every room looks out to the sea.

Here, comfort is favored above style. Though the building is 1993, it's full of flowered trellises, oversized sofas and a fireplace in the lobby. The bedrooms are pale with checked armchairs, white tiled fireplaces in the suites and blue and white pinstriped sheets. The café is about as jazzy as it gets — but 1950s jazzy, with lipstick red chairs and black and white tiled floors. Not exactly innovative, but easy on the eye.

Every inch of Shutters is designed to unwind — whether you're on the patio gazing at the beach, or in the lobby snuggled by the fireside. Lying by the pool is the quintessential LA fantasy as you watch the sea through stretches of sand and palm trees. And of course there's always the spa.

They'll even pack you a picnic if you want to stay outside. But a warning, the beach outside your window is sort of a public thoroughfare, so while the Café patio is perfect fo Venice Beach people-watching, you might not exactly want to use it for sun-bathing. Instead make use of the hotel's namesake — the actual shutters between your bathroom and bedroom. Open them, sink into your extravagantly deep whirlpool bath, and you can see straight out to the ocean.

Viceroy Santa Monica
The green glow through translucent glass is the only clue that there’s anything out of the ordinary going on behind the discreet (and unsigned) facade of this seaside hotel. Inside, though, it’s something else entirely — the Viceroy is one of Santa Monica’s hottest spots, and the interiors are as chic as can be, a contemporary update of a century-old British country style, where clean-lined modern monochrome meets bright kelly-green antique-style furnishings, with printed wallpaper in vivid colors and ornate china where you least expect it — hanging on the walls.

Too often visual sophistication comes at the expense of real quality, but the Viceroy holds up this end as well: guest rooms come complete with fine Italian linens and down duvets on the beds, Thymes products in the baths, and 27-inch flat-screen televisions. Rooms come with balconies, and though only half are oriented toward the Pacific, the view more than justifies the added expense.

Downstairs the Cameo Bar connects the lobby to the pool deck, and guests in search of some privacy sip cocktails in the poolside cabanas. Whist, the restaurant, serves a fine California-French cuisine. The beach is a short walk away but most visitors will likely find themselves headed toward the shops, bars and restaurants on the Third Street Promenade.
