Even this brand-new hotel (constructed in 2001) looks perfectly at home right in the middle of the historic downtown Presidio district — just steps away from the authentic Presidio itself, the last Spanish fortification to be built in North America. The building is modeled after a Spanish family villa, in white adobe and red tile roofs, with archways, courtyards, and fountains — the sort of thing that might come off a bit kitsch if it were not so well done (and here, they have had decades of practice at precisely this style). The rooms (and suites) themselves are absolutely modern, owing to their recent construction, with gas fireplaces, high-speed internet, and private soaking tubs, and each has a private patio or balcony. We would be in danger of violating some unspoken travel writing custom if we did not point out that the very fine bedsheets are, in fact, Frette, and that the manner of en-suite coffee preparation is the French press. This being health-conscious California, you can be assured of the most up-to-date spa treatments, available in-room, and you will likely have company in the fitness room or the adjoining heated pool. This is no oasis, though — the location is conveniently central, and though downtown Santa Barbara retains a small-town vibe, there are a number of high-end galleries and boutiques, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art is a short walk away.
Though California’s celebrated wine country is 300-plus miles to the north, the area surrounding Santa Barbara has its own vineyards — and the weather is much more pleasant here, with the added benefit of a stunning seaside location — there's not a lot of whale-watching in landlocked Napa county. |
