This majestic neoclassical building was the headquarters of an insurance company before being converted to a luxury hotel in 1991, and today it’s difficult to imagine it having ever been anything but a Ritz-Carlton, so perfectly is it suited to the task — midway between the old money of Nob Hill and the skyscrapers of the financial district, it spans half a city block, an imposing landmark in white stone and fluted columns. The lobby is no less opulent, lined with 19th-century artworks and crystal chandeliers, and the lobby lounge, looking out over the courtyard garden, is the venue for the daily afternoon tea, a Ritz-Carlton institution. Guest rooms continue in the same vein, spacious and elegantly appointed — feather beds and Egyptian cotton linens are universal, and the Italian marble bathrooms are oversized with double basins. Club level rooms offer access to a dedicated concierge, and many have impressive views down the slope of Nob Hill toward the downtown skyline. Though San Francisco is second only to New York in terms of diversity and quality of dining options, it’s difficult to top the Ritz-Carlton’s dining room — certainly there’s no place more formal in this laid-back city. The Terrace restaurant offers Mediterranean fare in a more casual environment, and the vast majority of San Francisco’s best restaurants are close by, including a number of Italian offerings to rival any in America. |

Clift
Hotel
Once San Francisco’s grandest old-fashioned luxury hotel, the century-old Clift underwent a thorough re-imagining at the hands of Philippe Starck, who has transformed its faded Victorian elegance into its nearest modern equivalent — all black, ivory and steely grey, with rich textures in hardwood, velvet and leather, it’s the last word in hyper-modern boutique decadence. Hints of the hotel’s Art Deco heritage remain, from the choice of furnishings in the surrealist-inspired lobby to the noir-ish lighting effects throughout. The famous Redwood Room was the focus of the original Clift, and it’s still here in all its wood-paneled splendor, decked out in some of Starck’s most serious lounge furniture. Like Morgans and St Martins Lane, the Clift is home to an outpost of Jeffrey Chodorow’s Asia de Cuba, serving its signature fusion cuisine at a massive cross-shaped communal table made from hand-etched Venetian mirrored glass. Guest rooms are stylish, but not precious — they’re sedate, almost monochrome, with accents in soft lavenders and greys, amplifying the effects of the natural light. Bathrooms are smallish, but clever, and the living spaces are spacious, many with astonishing views; the Clift is a high enough building to make for some spectacular sightlines. It’s a bit of a scene, as any Morgans Hotel Group production is intended to be — that’s a large part of the appeal for the people who make up the Clift’s clientele. This is Starck at his most elegant, and his eye for a well-placed surprise only deepens this place’s mystique. It would seem there’s some mileage yet left to be wrung from this partnership. |

pool. Helpful concierge staff. And, of course, the warm, personal
attention that has made the Handlery family famous. It is our pleasure
to welcome you to The Handlery Union Square Hotel in downtown San
Francisco.
At first glance, The Handlery Union Square Hotel feels more like the upscale boutique hotels found in Europe. But once you're greeted by a member of the Handlery staff, there's no mistaking that this is a premier San Francisco hotel whose friendly, helpful employees capture the heart and soul of the Bay area. Located at Union Square, you are steps away from all that San Francisco has to offer. The Handlery Hotel is ideally situated with the cable car at our corner to take you up the hill through beautiful Nob Hill and down into Fisherman's Wharf. Five blocks from the hotel in one direction you will find yourself at the Moscone Convention Center and The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) while a few blocks in the other direction you can sample some dim sum in China Town. For shopping enthusiasts, Macy's is right outside our door and with the new Westfield San Francisco Centre, the largest shopping center on the West Coast, you are minutes away from a new wardrobe. Whether you are here for business or leisure, the Handlery is the perfect San Francisco lodging option. On behalf of the entire Handlery family, we look forward to meeting you and we'll do everything to see that your stay is an enjoyable one. |

Drisco
Hotel Drisco’s most extraordinary feature has to be its location; while most of San Francisco’s hotels are clustered around the bustling downtown area, the Drisco makes its home in the sedate upscale residential district of Pacific Heights. This is the postcard vision of San Francisco, where century-old mansions sit side by side atop the ridge overlooking the Marina and the Bay. The building itself fits right in, and the interiors are suitably old-world, abounding in rich fabrics and antique furnishings. Unlike many of the downtown hotels, this one has views: of the downtown skyline itself, and of the picture-perfect residential surroundings. Rooms are spacious enough, with king beds, work desks and huge marble bathrooms, and the vast suites come with sofa beds as well. A gourmet breakfast buffet is complimentary, as is an afternoon wine aperitif. The restaurants and boutiques of upper Fillmore Street and the nearby Presidio Heights are within walking distance, and the Lyon Street Steps offer an astonishing view over the Palace of Fine Arts and San Francisco Bay. Virtually everything else in this compact city is a modest drive from this central location — and at the end of a day spent downtown you’ll be glad to retire to the serene seclusion of Pacific Heights. |

Monaco The phrases Belle Epoque and Fin de Siècle spring to mind the minute you enter the Hotel Monaco. Dating back to 1910, the hotel recently had a four-million-dollar facelift, restoring it to its former glory with freshness and vivacity. The Monaco can no longer be called an old-fashioned hotel. It is, however, grand, and it is large — the lobby has an enormous fireplace you could house a small family in, and a marble staircase with wrought iron banisters that make you feel like the youngest Von Trapp. The la-di-dah location in Union Square—accessible to theatre, shops, and business—gives it good reason to be haughty. But though it's as imposing a hotel as the Plaza or Ritz perhaps, it's been slimmed for a younger sensibility. There's a lot of light at the Monaco, and a lot of playfulness. Clouds and hot air balloons drift past on the muraled walls and the reception desk is dressed up to look like a Louis Vuitton trunk. The bedrooms are large with canopied beds and lots and lots of stripes. The Monaco is a friendly hotel and guests take of advantage of the complimentary wine served in one of the public rooms at cocktail hour (5-6pm) every night along with massages and tarot card readings. Downstairs is the bar, Petit Café, and the restaurant, Grand Café, is popular with the locals, with its un-hautely hefty portions of lobster ravioli and Giacometti-esque figures haunting the front. |

Hotel
Palomar Hotel Palomar belongs to the same family as San Francisco's Triton and Monaco hotels, and is the most luxurious of the three. It is located in the Pacific Place building at Fourth and Market — a 1908 landmark office building, bordering on Union Square's shopping centers, the Financial District, and funky, gentrifying SoMa, home to the convention center, museums, and any number of tech companies. The location, obviously, is central, remote from the Golden Gate and other sightseeing attractions, but close by to just about any business destination. The only drawback to this location is that the neighborhood lacks the cachet and postcard looks of Nob Hill and destinations northward. Once inside, though, you'll be happy to leave Market Street to the tourists and shoppers — this hotel is a hidden enclave of class, a piece of elegant, French-inflected, even vaguely Thirties design, like something from a detective story. Guest rooms are a little bit less serious, in paler colors and less sober prints; some rooms (not many) feature animal print carpets, and the Magritte suite spares no effort in honoring its namesake, with clouds floating across the ceiling and an incongruous bowler hat on your pillow. Amenities cover the basics, from 27-inch TVs and CD players to wireless internet, and unexpected bonuses include in-room spa services courtesy of staff brought in from the Monaco. The Fifth Floor is an excellent and formal French restaurant, one of the city's finest, and Little Italy and Chinatown are mere blocks away. |

Hotel Rex Those who aren’t fans of the 1930s detective stories may be unaware that San Francisco is the original hardboiled town. San Francisco crime had class—dames in silk stockings offering you two hundred to knock off tiresome husbands. Well, the Hotel Rex hasn’t forgotten this city’s past. With its leather club chairs, and marble busts just heavy enough to clock someone with, the lobby is strictly Dashiell Hammett. A San Francisco native, he dreamt up your original tough guys—Sam Spade and Nick Charles—and was a hard-drinking ex-detective himself. Not since the Maltese Falcon have you felt such an urge to don a fedora. In contrast to many small hotels (this one is ninety-four rooms) the Rex is masculine, especially in the bedrooms. Plaid and stripes dominate the wallpaper, curtains, and bedspreads, the lampshades are hand-painted with reductive designs, and the room is framed in dark wood. No canopies or bed frills here: palm plants serve as decoration. The Rex has much charm. It represents a bold, blocky, stylized world—and staying there might make you dream in black and white. When you consider the shorts, sandals, and cell phones that define San Francisco today, it’s strange to think that once upon a time, this was a place of hard Scotch, cigarette smoke, and loaded Colts. Except, perhaps, if you stay up until dawn and watch the city fog roll menacingly in. |

Hotel Triton It’s refreshing to find a boutique hotel that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and the Triton’s retro-kitsch décor and cheerful blue and yellow palette is the perfect antidote to the strict and severe minimalism that has become the boutique standard. Rather than high-tech materials and monochrome gloss, the Triton’s lobby is a slightly surrealistic affair, curvaceous, with gold columns, S-backed chairs, and a deep cushioned couch running the length of the wall. Upstairs, the interiors carry on in the same brash style, with the smallish rooms decked out in bright colors and funky furnishings. Decorating schemes vary from floor to floor, some overtly Zen-inspired, others something of an undersea fantasy, and the suites were decorated by celebrity guests, from Carlos Santana to Jerry Garcia to Woody Harrelson. Wi-fi access is standard throughout, and there’s a 24-hour yoga TV channel as well as earth-conscious touches like energy-saving bulbs and organic linens and towels, in case you forget you’re on the West Coast. Fun and unpretentious, yet still stylish enough to attract the beautiful people, the Triton is fast becoming San Francisco’s new rock & roll hotel, playing host to those rockers who are too shy to brave the mean streets around the Tenderloin’s legendary Phoenix, the city’s black sheep anti-boutique. Car service is available to the nearby Financial District, Union Square’s toniest shops are all around, and Chinatown’s entry gate looms just across the street.

Hotel Vitale One of the only brand-new ground-up hotel projects to open in San Francisco this decade, the Vitale stands on the newly revitalized Embarcadero, right across from the foodie mecca that is the rehabilitated Ferry Building. This is new-school luxury hospitality, distinct from the stately palaces of Nob Hill and the high-rise hotels of the financial district, an unpretentious boutique style — albeit one with a rooftop spa and a stunning view of the bay. Surfaces are finished in natural wood and stone, and colors are earthy, natural — very little high-design gloss here. This is a town that likes its urbanity with a side of humility; hence the aromatherapy and yoga along with the cocktail bar and the plasma TVs. Rooms are bright and airy, with full-length windows, and the better half look out over the bay, the bridge, and Alcatraz. The Americano restaurant serves Northern California cuisine with Italian influences, all fresh from local sources, including the Ferry Building’s Saturday farmer’s market. And some clever partnerships expand the Vitale’s services beyond the boutique norm — the doors of the Bay Club gym and the Golden Gateway Swim and Tennis club are open to Vitale guests at low preferred rates. |

The Huntington Hotel & Nob Hill Spa The Fairmont and the Mark Hopkins, both classic hotels (and tourist attractions) in their own right, sit just a block away — but for a quiet, classic elegance and a taste of old-world San Francisco there’s nothing like the Huntington Hotel. Atop Nob Hill, the Huntington is ideally situated for commanding views of the Bay, the downtown skyline, and the surrounding architectural wonders — Grace Cathedral, the Flood Mansion, and Huntington Park. It’s little exaggeration to say that stepping into the Huntington one feels transported to bygone era. Guest rooms are packed with antique furnishings and plush fabrics, each one individually decorated by one of a number of designers. Spaces are generous and walls are thick, owing to the hotel’s heritage as a luxury apartment house, and the suites are positively sprawling and opulent. Just off the lobby is the Big Four restaurant, named for Nob Hill’s original aristocracy, the railroad barons Charles Crocker, Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins and C.P. Huntington himself. It’s no stretch to imagine the likes of the Big Four dining here, surrounded by mahogany-paneled walls and emerald-green leather banquettes. It’s one of San Francisco’s top restaurants, with a wine list to match. And on the other side of the lobby, a surprise; the Nob Hill Spa is as modern as can be, a minimalist setting for a vast array of health and beauty treatments. The Huntington is a short (but steep!) walk from the theatre district, Union Square and the financial district, and is just off both of the remaining cable car lines, offering easy access to Fisherman’s Wharf, Little Italy and North Beach.

Mandarin Oriental San Francisco The Mandarin Oriental hotels famously bring a taste of Far East ultra-luxury to American shores, and the San Francisco outpost goes even a step further; to the Asian-inspired décor and the top-flight service, add the simple fact that the Mandarin is San Francisco’s highest hotel, occupying the top floors of the city’s third-tallest building, resulting in sweeping panoramic views of the sort more often associated with Tokyo or Hong Kong hotels than with those of this low-slung, compact city. And in true Mandarin style, much is made of those views — there’s nowhere else in this city where you can take in a bird’s-eye view of the bay while soaking in an extra-deep tub the way you can in the Mandarin King rooms. Standard rooms are no disappointment either, and the city view is nothing to complain about, especially given the fact that every room comes complete with a set of binoculars. All rooms are decorated in that signature blend of modern zen and classic Asian antique, with Frette Egyptian cotton sheets, 25-inch televisions and high-speed wired and wireless internet access, and all benefit from 24-hour room service and twice daily visits from housekeeping. Business and fitness facilities are comprehensive, and the restaurant, Silks, serves an inspired Pacific Rim cuisine. The Mandarin Oriental is located in the heart of the financial district, minutes from most of downtown’s best shopping and dining, and just blocks away from the theater district and the waterfront tourist attractions. |
