Movie Colony may seem a strange name for a hotel, although we must say it beats naming the place after its street address. It’s named after its neighborhood, it turns out, where the stars came to escape the pressures of Hollywood and spend some (more) time in the sun. Cheap and easy jet travel took the stars farther afield, to Miami and elsewhere, and Palm Springs has become a more low-key destination, still an easy drive from Los Angeles, and with prices within the reach of the common people.
The building is a landmark, designed by Albert Frey in 1935, and it’s a textbook example of the Art Deco style that was then the standard. Today the hotel is packed with references to that era, with kidney-shaped couches and those vaguely Jetsons-looking coffee tables. Modern touches include
WiFi internet, DVD players, and exquisitely comfortable pillow-top king beds, with 400-thread duvets.
Downtown Palm Springs is just blocks away, though you may spend most of your time lounging by the pool, in the shadow of the stark San Jacinto mountains. Perfect for a taste of old Hollywood glamour—book one of the townhouses (our money is on the Sinatra) for the real star treatment.

and Thymes bath products. And though Palm Springs may
feel like another world altogether, the Viceroy isn’t
exactly off the grid; broadband internet means that, for
better or worse, business is just a fiber optic line
away—or, if you’re old-fashioned, Los Angeles is just a
two-hour drive.
