The Carneros Inn
Finally a break from the Tuscan-Provençal style that seems to dominate the California wine country. Carneros Inn, at the south end of Napa, close to San Francisco, is rather more modern, its style a sort of rustic minimalism, its inspiration seemingly drawn not from Europe but from the American Midwest and Northeast.
It’s the buildings that people tend to either love or hate about Carneros. The corrugated metal roofs of the cottages are striking and unassuming at the same time, and fit well into the landscape of rolling hills and wide-open farmland. Once inside, though, it’s difficult to find fault — while not as over-the-top as some wine country accommodations, the cottages are simple, tasteful, and more than luxurious enough, with the full range of modern electronics, splendid indoor-outdoor showers, and private garden patios, complete with gas heaters for cool California nights.
Add to this a long outdoor pool with an idyllic view of the vineyards, a spa to compete with any in the wine country, and Farm, a restaurant serving locally sourced California cuisine, and it’s clear Carneros is a contender. There’s no accounting for taste, of course, but if you’re not afraid of modern architecture, you’ll find nothing at all to complain about here.

Milliken Creek
Until recently, the city of Napa’s only connection with the Napa Valley’s wine and tourism scenes was geographic proximity and a shared name. A bit south of all the real action, Napa was more a rest stop on the way to the wine country — but places like Milliken Creek, just might change all that.
More an upscale bed and breakfast than a traditional hotel, Milliken Creek is nothing if not intimate. It’s idiosyncratic as well — a sort of British-Africa theme adds some character, in contrast to the faceless rustic luxury that too often passes for a Northern California style. The setting, just a few miles up Silverado Trail from downtown, is as serene as can be; each of the twelve rooms looks out over the Napa river, some from private decks. A color scheme of khaki, chocolate and cream sets a restful tone, and guest rooms include luxuries like fireplaces, king beds, Frette linens and Bulgari bath products. Flat-screen televisions and wireless internet are standard.
Activities are minimal but well-chosen, from spa treatments and massages with a view of the river to the afternoon cheese-and-wine hour. Some will use Milliken Creek as a jumping-off point for trips farther north into the wine country, but it’s quite well suited as a destination unto itself.
Milliken Creek is designed and operated for an adult clientele seeking a tranquil atmosphere, and is therefore unsuitable for children under 16. The property loves animals but asks that you do not bring them with you during your stay.
