La Costa Resort and Spa was, quite literally, America’s first full-service destination spa resort, opening its doors in 1965, long before “wellness” became big business. Hollywood stars and other well-heeled Americans embraced the concept wholeheartedly, and a new kind of resort was born. It would be an understatement merely to say that in the intervening years La Costa has seen some competition, but it’s done its best to stay current. The Spanish Colonial-style architecture of the resort is still intact, stucco walls, red tile roofs and all, but the spa complex is all new, after a $140 million dollar renovation. The result is one of the most expansive and comprehensive spas in southern California, offering everything from Roman pools and Swiss showers to a comprehensive menu of body treatments as well as a couple of special guest stars: Dr. Deepak Chopra’s Ayurvedic center, and the Yamaguchi salon, featuring—no joke—feng shui-inspired hairdressing (only time will tell if this will catch on the way the original La Costa spa did). Rooms and suites have been remodeled as well, with contemporary furniture, muted colors and dark wood accents, and all are comfortable, many featuring private balconies or terraces.
