Cow Palace
Since the days of Father Kino, the Santa Cruz Valley has been the site of many historical events and one of the most active tourist havens in Arizona. The Cow Palace was established upon the site of an old general store in the days of Otho Kinsley. Otho established the Kinsley Ranch in 1920 and became famous for furnishing bucking horses and Brahma bulls to the now famous Fiesta de Los Vaqueros Rodeo. Since then, the Cow Palace Restaurant and Bar remains one of this area's most well known attractions. Old timers report that on occasion the Cow Palace became a theatre. The dining room would be cleared and a movie projector and screen would be setup for the patrons to enjoy a film. In later years, many movies were filmed in the area, such as "The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing," Pray For The Wildcat," "Tin Cup," "The Postman," and "Boys On The Side." As a result, the Cow Palace was frequented by John Wayne and many other stars whose famous faces now grace the bar. http://cowpalacerestaurant.com/index.htm

The Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (FLWO) is the largest field installation of the Smithsonian Institution Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) outside Cambridge, MA. Since October 1968, the FLWO has been used as the site for experiments requiring extremely dark skies, dry climate, and good "optical seeing." Located at the base of Mt. Hopkins in the Santa Rita Mountains, 56 kilometers (35 miles) south of Tucson and just within the boundary of the Coronado National Forest, the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory Visitors Center features displays and exhibits on astronomy and astrophysics, natural science, and cultural history. The Visitors Center is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. (Please note that the Visitors Center is closed on Federal Holidays.) Special Star Parties, featuring lectures and telescopic viewing, are held quarterly at the Center on a Saturday, starting late in the afternoon. Reserved-seat bus tours, originating at the Visitors Center, are conducted three times weekly from early spring to late fall. Guided, reserved-seat bus tours of FLWO for the general public are conducted Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from mid-March through November. Tours originate at the Visitors Center, which opens at 8:30 a.m. A video presentation begins at 9 a.m. The bus leaves the office at 9:30 am. and returns by 3 p.m. Reservations are required and may be made in advance by calling (520) 670-5707, or, by writing to Whipple Observatory, P.O. Box 97, Amado, AZ 85645. Reservations are on a first-come first-served basis up to the 26-visitor maximum. Because of the duration of the tour, children under six years of age are not permitted. Tickets are purchased on the day of the tour. Tour participants should dress warmly, bring lunches, and be prepared for moderate exertion at an altitude of 2626 meters (8550 feet). Not all mountain facilities are accessible, and, persons with cardiac or respiratory problems should check with a physician about traveling to this altitude. http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/flwo

Eloy (Near Casa Grande) -- Click Here for Accommodations Suggestions for Eloy
Eloy is located along old Arizona Highway 84, just off of Interstate 10, about 15 miles southeast of Casa Grande. Eloy lies in the Santa Cruz River Valley and is served by Interstate 10 with two exits, Toltec Road and Sunshine Boulevard.

Eloy is part of the Lower Colorado River sub region of the Sonoran Desert and receives 8.48 inches of rain annually. Like all of the Sonoran Desert, Eloy has two distinct rainy seasons, one during the winter, as Pacific storms bring gentle rains from the North and West and the other, during the summer.

Summer rain arrives in the form of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico that generates thunderstorms by convection. Some of these storms can be quite violent. More rarely, Eloy receives large amounts of rain from dissipating tropical storms from the Pacific. Like most other cities and towns in Arizona, Eloy's wettest month is August, with a mean rainfall of 1.65 inches.

Being located in a large, flat basin, Eloy is subject to extremely hot summers. July is the hottest month, with a mean high of 105 degrees and a mean low of 75 degrees. However, on any given day in July, the temperature can easily exceed 110 and reach as high as 120 degrees. August is generally cooler because of the increased humidity as the monsoon season gets into full swing. Nights are generally warm but pleasant throughout the summer months.

Eloy experiences exceptionally mild winters. January is the coolest month, with a mean high of 67 degrees and a mean loan of 36 degrees. However, it can be much warmer, with temperatures in 70’s or even an occasional 80 degree temperature. Nighttime lows can reach into the 20’s during and after winter storms, with the lowest recorded temperature being 13 degrees.

Holbrook -- Click Here for Accommodations Suggestions for Holbrook
The first time I saw Holbrook was in the 1950s when I made my first trip across America. This trip was made traveling from just south of Chicago to Los Angeles on Route 66, known as The Main Street of America. This narrow strip of asphalt was a symbol of hope for farmers fleeing the dust bowl and soldiers starting a new life after World War II, and Holbrook was one of those places many chose to settle.

Holbrook was a frontier town in 1881 and it had some of the same atmosphere in 1950 as it has today. The old 1898 courthouse, now on the National Register of Historic Places, is the centerpiece of town. The town is surrounded with the spectacular beauty and spirituality of the Indian Country that beckons travelers to pull off Interstate 40. The next time you are in this area, you should also as it is like stepping into a different space and time. Holbrook is also a great home base for a tour of Navajo, Hopi and Apache country. Holbrook, Arizona, is just 28 miles from the Petrified Forest National Park.

Lake Havasu City -- Click Here for Accommodations Suggestions for Lake Havasu City
Let's face it. When most people think of Lake Havasu City the think of the old London Bridge and all of the "old" people who live here. However, it is much more than that. Along with the lake there is the Mohave Desert, the Sonoran Desert, good golf and weather to enjoy them all year round!

There is also the "English Village," where you can lure England. Nestled beneath London Bridge you will find lots of good shopping and nice restaurants. The Tudor style architecture, the shops and restaurants create the atmosphere of seeing a piece of "merry olde England". After taking a stroll along the tree-lined walkways and doing a little shopping, you will enjoy stopping at one of the local breweries for a hand-crafted beer, or root beer too if you prefer.

It seems it is always a beautiful day in Lake Havasu. The sky is blue, the air is clean, the sparkling blue water with its beautiful mountain backdrop is truly an awesome sight during the day. And at night, it seems as though you can actually reach up touch the stars in the tranquil desert sky.

The 45-mile lake, from which its name was derived, is actually on the Colorado River and is actually a  reservoir that was created when Parker Dam was built. The London Bridge, which crosses the Bridgewater Channel from the mainland to a small island on the Colorado River, is world-famous and draws visitors from all over the world.

Sierra Vista -- Click Here for Accommodations Suggestions for Sierra Vista
Surrounded by the breathtaking natural beauty of majestic mountain ranges and the San Pedro River,  a temperate year-round climate, abundant sunshine, and clean, fresh air; it is no wonder that
Sierra Vista has become a favorite of visitors.

When you visit Sierra Vista, you will be hard pressed not to think about the Old West - the desert, tanned cowboys herding cattle, and Indians. This is one of those old western towns that still has some of this, along with places where you can lose yourself in the splendor of magnificent canyons such as the Huachuca, where you can watch the hummingbirds as they sip nectar from flowers. You can also visit a historic military post with its roots deeply embedded into the decades of Indian wars.

It is here also where evidence of prehistoric man has been preserved at the archaeological sites; where petroglyphs and pictographs depict the life of earlier man; where the Spanish explorer Coronado first entered the US; and where ghost town ruins reflect the futile hope of settlers to tame the arid land.

Today, Sierra Vista is a small city with big city amenities and a small town attitude. You will find affordable and charming lodging in one of the over 1,000 hotel, motel and bed and breakfast rooms, as well as a good variety of ethnic and cultural choices for dining. For additional information on the area, visit http://www.visitsierravista.com.

Snowflake -- Click Here for Accommodations Suggestions for Snowflake
Snowflake lies in an area of great contrasts - barren desert to the north and mountain ranges to the south. One of the nation's most unique parks lies north of Snowflake, the Petrified Forest National Park, which includes not only the Petrified Forest, but the Painted Desert and Navajo Indian Reservation with attractions such as Monument Valley and Oraibi (on the Hopi Indian Reservation), the oldest continually occupied village in the U.S. To the south and west of Snowflake are high mountains and forest, including the White Mountains, Sitgreaves National Forest, and the Mogollon Rim. Close by are many small lakes that are perfect for trout fishing and swimming. The Sunrise Ski Resort is located 65 miles south of Snowflake on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation.

Founded in 1878, Snowflake was named after its founders Apostle Erastus Snow and Mormon land agent William Flake. At an elevation of 5,600 feet, it lies in a broad, flat valley drained by the Cottonwood and Silver Creeks. Established in 1881, it incorporated in 1948.
