Just south of Tucson off of I-19 are the Santa Rita Mountains. Within the mountains, and just a drive of about 15 minutes off of the interstate, is Madera Canyon. This beautiful area makes a large dent in the northwest face of the Santa Rita Mountains. Because of Its higher elevation, it provides locals and visitors alike with relief from the hot months of summer in the Sonoran Desert, and allows access to snow during the winter. The canyon is a world-renowned location for bird watching as it is a major resting place for migrating species. The extensive trail system of the Santa Rita Mountains is easily accessed from the Canyon's campground and picnic areas. Along with the campground, there are a few other accommodations in Madera Canyon, the Chuparosa Inn and Santa Rita Lodge.

Chuparosa Inn

The Chuparosa Inn is located 40 miles Southeast of Tucson, Arizona, nestled in the heart of Madera Canyon. A stay in Madera Canyon is ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat in the Santa Rita Mountains. The Inn offers a wonderful environment for couples with a romantic heart, nature lovers, hiking and biking enthusiasts, or anyone who enjoys meeting others in a relaxed atmosphere. At an elevation of 5300 ft (2450m), this area offers four mild seasons, over 305 days of sunshine, and an average summer temperature of 85°F (29°C). We are now offering a continental breakfast.

The Chuparosa Inn is helping scientists research hummingbird distribution by hosting a Hummingbird Monitoring Network site. The Madera Canyon banding site is one of 15 research stations located in southeastern Arizona, southern California and British Columbia. The goals of the program are to better understand the diversity and abundance of hummingbirds in southwestern United States and northern Mexico in order to provide information to land managers that will protect habitats required for perpetuation of hummingbird populations.

The Inn has three guest rooms with a private entry, patio, kitchenette and bath. The Hummingbird Suite has a queen size bed, cozy sitting room, mini- kitchenette, private bath and patio. The Bird's Nest has a queen iron canopy bed draped in sheer curtains, kitchenette, private bath and patio. The Cowboy Room has a queen four poster bed, kitchenette, private bath, and patio area on Madera Creek. The interior of the Cowboy Room is shown at the right.

Guests at the Chuparosa are encouraged to watch, take photographs, and ask questions to learn about hummingbirds and the research program. In September 2004 our guests were treated to a close-up look at eight different species of hummingbird. All got a chance to take photographs and release a hummingbird from their hand.

Santa Rita Lodge

Santa Rita Lodge is located in Madera Canyon, part of the Coronado National Forest, 13 miles southeast of Green Valley, Arizona. We rent efficiency apartments or "casitas" and cabins for overnight or longer. The lodge has been in existence since the 1940's. The structures are old, but have been recently renovated. The lodge is located beside Madera Canyon Creek which usually flows from monsoon season in July through the spring. Madera Canyon is a rich, protected habitat that provides an ideal breeding ground for about 130 species of birds. Birders from all over the world come here to view rare species such as Elegant Trogon, Painted Redstart, Broad-billed and Magnificent Hummingbirds, Elf and Whiskered Screech Owls. Feeders are abundant on the lodge ground to attract a wide variety of birds. At an elevation of 5,000 feet, the lodge is about 10 degrees cooler than Tucson.
