Clanton, a growing city with a rich history, is the seat of Chilton County
Alabama, the state's largest producer of peaches. Besides peaches, some of our
most remarkable natural resources are a beautiful landscape and a friendly
small-town atmosphere.
Located in the center of Alabama on Interstate 65, halfway between the cities
of Birmingham and Montgomery, Clanton is a location ripe for business and
industrial development. It is Clanton's proximity to the new automobile plants
in the state that has made our city the site of two automotive parts
manufacturers since 1999.
Our city's parks and recreation facilities are beautiful, convenient and offer
something for everyone year-round. Visitors to our city enjoy an abundant
selection of hotels, restaurants, and attractions, and because of our
proximity to the larger cities, day trips to an even larger selection of
entertainment sources are convenient. Visit their website at
www.clanton.al.us for additional information about the area.

wonderful old southern culture, property available for new business and

drive down shady streets lined with great old homes, a taste of southern 'home
cooking' at one of the unique restaurants, and a friendliness seldom experienced

flea markets will be the highlight of your stay - Collinsville Trade Day is held

Decatur -- Click Here for Accommodations Suggestions for Decatur
Decatur's charming historic districts harkens back to an easier time. Embracing
over 116-acres, the site is one of the most intact Victorian-era neighborhoods
in Alabama dating from 1870 through 1910.
Decatur's place in history continues into modern times with such sites as Point
Mallard, home of America's first Wave Pool; Cook's Natural Science Museum; the
state's first Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Festival; and the Wheeler National
Wildlife Refuge.
Below are some of my favorite places and things to see and do in and around Decatur, Alabama.
THE CARNEGIE VISUAL ARTS CENTER
The Carnegie Visual Arts Center, a not-for-profit organization, is a
cultural, educational and community-service organization providing an
environment to promote learning, creation and appreciation of the visual arts,
preserve one of the area's significant historical buildings and serve as a
multi-purpose community resource for all the citizens of Decatur, Morgan County
and all of North Alabama.
THE CIVIL WAR WALKING TOUR
This is how Confederate General Hood described Decatur during the Civil War
as, "A tough nut to crack.".
Relive the four day struggle between advancing Confederates and garrisoned
Union troops that began on October 26, 1864. The Civil War Walking Tour
is a self-guided walking tour mostly through the Old Decatur and Albany
Historic Districts of Decatur describing the events that took place in
Decatur during the war.
COOK'S NATURAL SCIENCE MUSEUM
With more than 2,000 exhibits and artifacts, Cook's Natural Science
Museum is one of the South's finest museums of its type. Learn about the
rich wildlife common to the Tennessee Valley through interactive, talking, live
and hands-on exhibits. The greatest wonder may be that admission is FREE!
HISTORIC HARTSELLE
Historic Hartselle, named as one of the 100 Best Small Towns in
America invites you to stop and sit a spell in a relaxing getaway that
transports you through time to a simpler way of life. Historic downtown
Hartselle beckons enthusiastic antique shoppers and collectors from around
the world. Specialty stores offer collectibles, gift items, baskets, lamps,
frames, prints and knick-knacks.
JOE WHEELER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

of a large glass enclosed observatory at the Joe Wheeler National Wildlife
Refuge. The center features self-guided tours with displays and films and
hiking/biking trails of various distances. Wheeler encompasses 34,500 acres of
naturally preserved woodlands and features one of the South's largest
educational centers for waterfowl and wildlife study.
NORTH ALABAMA BIRDING TRAIL
For millions of years, the Tennessee River has cut its way through the
Cumberland Plateau carving the Tennessee Valley, one of the most diverse and
beautiful landscapes in the south. Numerous eastern woodland birds and waterfowl
occur in abundance, joined at times by uncommon visitors such as nesting
Scissor-tailed Flycatchers, vagrant gulls, sea ducks, grebes, loons, shorebirds,
and late fall vagrants from the gulf coast. The new North Alabama Birding Trail
features 50 sites across the region. The Central Loop of the three loop tour
includes eight sites in the Decatur area.
THE PAINTED LADIES
Enjoy 116 acres of the most intact Victorian-era neighborhoods in Alabama.
Listed in the National Register of Historical Places, Decatur offers two
distinct Historic Districts; Old Decatur and New Decatur-Albany. Learn
about both sites through a walking (or driving) tour of Historic Decatur. A
descriptive map is available to you free of charge at the Decatur/Morgan County
Convention & Visitors Bureau.
POINT MALLARD PARK
As the inventor
of the modern water park, Point Mallard continues to lead the way in innovative
family fun activities both in and out of the water. The "older" children can
play on the scenic 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course while getting back
to nature in the wooded campground. Waterpark open mid-May through early
September. Other facilities open year round.

THE PRINCESS THEATRE
Once billed as the "largest playhouse between Birmingham and Nashville, the
Princess Theatre, has been a North Alabama landmark for more than a century.
Today, the Princess Theatre is once again an important part of North
Alabama showcasing such artists as Ray Charles, Loretta Swit, Cloris
Leachman and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

DeKalb County
This is one of my favorite areas on Alabama. DeKalb
County is full of many surprises, all waiting to be discovered. It is a place to
enjoy the sights and sounds of all four seasons. Springtime brings a
renewal to the mountainous terrain as first the Redbud and Dogwood announce
their arrival in a showy display of purple and white flowers. Then the hills
come to life with blooms of pink and bright fuschia Rhododendron. Mountain
Laurel and Wild Azalea blossoms adorn her side. Pink Lady Slippers and Jack in
the Pulpits gracefully raise their heads from the forest floor. Summer
brings children squealing with delight as they frolic and play at the many
summer camps in Mentone. Autumn is gloriously adorned in her beautiful
array of fall colors and afternoon scenic drives beckon you along the Lookout
Mountain Parkway, through
Desoto State
Park and
Little River Canyon
National Preserve. I love both the state park and the trails of
the canyon. Winter drifts in as downtown shoppers get ready for Christmas
and the novice and those eager to learn hone their skills at a mountaintop ski
resort. Beautiful scenery to enjoy as you visit DeKalb County. Check
it out and I'm sure you will like the area as much as I do. Jim.

Opelika - Click Here for Accommodations Suggestions in Opelika
Welcome to Opelika, a city of 25,000. Opelika’s entry signs proclaim, “Rich in Heritage with a Vision for the Future.” This is the motto we live by here in this East Alabama city, which is located between Montgomery, Alabama and Columbus, Georgia.”
Opelika was ceded from the Creek Indians in the Treaty of Cusseta, The Creeks are considered to be the source of the city’s name, “Opilu” meaning “Swamp” and “Laka” meaning “large. Despite its name, Opelika is no big swamp and actually sits at the highest level of elevation between Atlanta and New Orleans.
Historic Railroad Avenue sits peacefully along the rails which have moved well beyond the rancorous rail days. In quiet contrast, the restored fashionable homes of North Opelika stand today as a testament to more genteel days. Each year, the neighbors celebrate their heritage with the Victorian Front Porch Tour. The tour, a creation of local artist Jan Jones, features more than 40 homes, decked with life-sized Victorian figures, live costumed characters, singers, actors, and musicians. One weekend in December the roads are closed and thousands of visitors walk the streets in a scene right out of a Currier and Ives card.
When Opelika’s rail lines were destroyed in the Civil War as a part of Rousseaus’ Raid, the city struggled to rebuild. The newly restored Depot, home to Opelika Main Street and the Opelika Arts Association, was part of the reconstruction the 1920s, a time when Opelika found its new catalyst for growth as a textile mill town. The historic Pepperell Mill Village is still alive today and is protected as a historic area.
Opelika has a 1200 seat performing arts center, which features national caliber performances in the Opelika Arts Association Performing Arts Series. In addition, during the summer months, the Summer Swing concert series features diverse musical offerings with free concerts in the city’s Municipal Park.
Opelika’s Grand National Golf Course is the largest of Alabama’s heralded Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and is consistently ranked in the top ten public courses in the nation. Grand National has hosted the NIKE Tour, now the Nationwide Tournament, the LPGA and the NCCA Men’s national championships. There are four public courses and two private clubs in the immediate area as well.
Opelika’s schools combine the state’s top technology with a strong emphasis on art education. There are over 2400 computers for the systems children and every third grader takes 6 weeks of violin. (Just as the rail conductors warned unwary passengers to duck while driving through town at the turn of the century, School Superintendent Phil Raley warns music aficionados to avoid those first few weeks of hearing nine year olds play violin.) Opelika’s After School Program provides an added benefit for the area’s working families.
Opelika offers plenty to see and do. Spring Villa Park is reportedly one of the nation’s oldest water parks. Plantation owner, William Penn Yonge, imported various species of fish to fill his spring-fed lake in the 1850’s and then had glass bottom boats so that visitors from Europe could see the specimens. Spring Villa is only one of five passive recreational parks operated by the Recreation Department. The parks and recreation program offers cradle to the grave activities, starting with Stroller Fitness for moms and babies and going to Senior Citizen field trips. Pottery, ceramics, tennis, swimming, softball, baseball, football, basketball, gymnastics, AFAA certified aerobics, children’s activities, Friday Night Drop-In programs for youth, herb gardening, scrap booking, and stained glass are just a few of the programs run at Parks and Rec. Participant fees are nominal. Special trips include mountain biking in north Georgia, spending the night at Zoo Atlanta and aboard the USS Alabama.
Sports enthusiasts will note that Opelika was named by ESPN Magazine as “Pigskin Heaven” in 1998, noting that there were 5 major NCAA Division I football schools within easy driving distance, the closest being Auburn University only ten minutes away. Auburn University, and local Southern Union State Community College offer special programs and reduced tuitions for lifelong learners. Such readily available sources of entertainment and educational opportunities led to Opelika being named by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine, as one of the top six places in which to retire.
If you prefer water sports, Lee County Lake is a great fishing hole, and Lake Saugahatchee is a favorite for canoeing. Speedsters can enjoy skiing at Lake Harding only 20 minutes away or at Lake Martin just 30 minutes away.
So, for those looking for a great weekend getaway or a great place to spend your golden years , you might want to consider “The Big Swamp” - Opelika, Alabama.
Please visit the City of Opelika's Web site at www.opelika.org for additional information or www.opelika.com. You can also contact the Opelika Chamber of Commerce, 601 Avenue A · PO Box 2366,Opelika, AL 36803-2366.

From things to do, to things to see, Wetumpka has something for
everyone. Located in Central Alabama, Wetumpka offers small-town living
with the convenience of big-city amenities only minutes away in Montgomery.
Annual events include Christmas on the Coosa, the Coosa River Whitewater
Festival, Frontier Days, Riverfest, Earth Day, Adventure Race, and the Coosa
River Challenge. Abundant in lore and legend, Wetumpka (an Indian term meaning
rumbling waters) is rich in aboriginal history. DeSoto’s expeditions traversed
the area nearly 500 years ago and found a palisade village built around A.D.
1000. In 1717 the French established Fort Toulouse as a military outpost and
trading center, which was the beginning of an important trade hub for the entire
area and continues to the present. Downtown Wetumpka is located on the banks of
the Coosa River where rocks and rapids halt all navigation northward. The Coosa
joins the Tallapoosa River just south of town to form the Alabama River
providing a navigable water route to the Gulf of Mexico. The city sits in the
scenic, southern foothills of the Appalachian Mountains with elevation ranging
from a low point of 150 feet above sea level on the west side of the Coosa River
to a high point of 540 feet on Bald Knob Mountain, the eroded remains of a
meteorite crater which blasted into the bedrock millions of years ago. The
moderate climate with warm summers, mild winters, and moderate rainfall affords
year round activities with minimum disruptions due to weather events. Go to
