The Port Royal Pirate Mystery Weekend at The Victoria |
Your travel source with a personal touch! |
On October 26, 2002 there was murder, mischief, and mayhem on the Spanish Main as guests played out The Port Royal Pirate Mystery. The mystery took place in Port Royal in Jamaica (actually throughout The Victoria) where easy money consorts with easy virtue. The time was during the golden age of piracy in the late 1600s when the area was filled with pirates, plunderers, buccaneers, privateers, and "dangerous" ladies all of which were played by guests to The Victoria.
Most of the action took place in Dead Man’s Den (the Piano Bar) right near where a skeleton had washed ashore. Guests were greeted at the door by Rusty Nails, the bouncer and doorman (another guest playing his part) and, after being greeted at the door and responding with the passwords, "Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of Rum" (of which there was plenty to be had along with other spirits), the other guests were invited into Dead Man’s Den to enjoy an evening of fun.

There was plenty of entertainment with The Merry Mermaids performing on stage along with the funny Flotsam and Jetsam (again, all played by guests of the evening), and gaming tables with poker, 21, cut throat (of course) and dice where we could all either make -- or loose our pieces of gold! |
|
All of the guests found that life was not cheap in Port Royal and all had brought plenty of loot along to purchase whatever they needed. Why, I myself was sold into slavery to Daring Darlene the Pirate Queen and Quartermaster Connie the Cunning (two lovely "lady" guests) to serve the rest of my time in slavery on an island full of women!
Money could also be spent to have your fortune told by another guest, Chi Chi LaRue, the famous Sea Gypsy or to purchase mementos of your visit to Port Royal from Chesty Treasure, a lady who surely lived up to her name!
| I came as Lieutenant Dinghy Dick, a
lieutenant on the ship Black Knight, who of it has been said he arrived by
his name because he had a large dinghy and was rumored to be pretty cozy
with Shanghai Charlene, the pirate she captain of the Sea Nymph and a
notorious lady who earned her moniker by lurking sailors to her ship and
then shanghaiing them to ports unknown and selling them into piracy and was
once Blackbeard’s steady girl. Captain Blackbeard (another interesting
guest) was my captain. Pat, my wife, came as Bo’sun Blunderbust Betty, a
"sea nymph" on board the Sea Nymph! Upon our arrival we entered Dead Man’s Den and begin to meet the other conspirators to this interesting pirate mystery, all of whom were played by other guests of The Victoria for this fun-filled evening. Interesting folks with names like Maggie McGuire, business partner of Calico Jack the co-owner of the "den;" One Eyed Jack, a provisioner who you can never depend upon to give you a good deal who seemed to hang at the bar all evening; and some of the help at Dead Man’s Den such as the bartender, Old Grog Hog and the two "hospitality hostesses" who "worked" the den, Annie Port and Lifeboat Lil. |
|
Add to this mix the regulars who entertained at the den, Sally Sea Legs, Dorinda Double Ender, and Nancy Neptune and the comedy duo that were mentioned and this place was filled with some strange folks before the customers even arrived.

But arrive they did! All types from the important governor Percival Pitts of Port Royal and his wife Lady Zazu Pitts and her personal maid, Brandy Whine, to the pirates and buccaneers and privateers themselves. Captain Blackbeard (a privateer who was the skipper of the Black Knight), and Captain Weymouth (a rather shady British Navy captain), along with Bluebeard (a pirate) all came with members of their respective crews -- Lieutenant Dry Dock Dora, First Mate Tortuga Tessie, Quartermaster Leaky Scuppers, Bo-sun Tommy Tattoo, Lieutenant Foggy Bottom, Quartermaster Quigley, Lieutenant Keel Haul Hank, and even Doctor Sawbones of the Black Knight who was happy to treat anything that ails you as long as the preferred method of "healing" could be used -- bloodletting! |
| I will not tell you the entire tale as it is much to interesting. But, a murder did take place and the murderer was found and justice prevailed in the end -- along with drinks for all and a great buffet meal sea foods and red meat along with all of the fixings to go with it. A great time was had by all for only $259* per couple that included all of the fun and entertainment, food and drinks to include your favorite spirits and wine along with snacks before dinner, and a wonderful overnight stay at The Victoria! |
