| Evergreen Pacific Exploring Alaska
and British Columbia - Reissue of Stephen E. Hilson's original
1976
historical & nautical atlas, covering the west coast of Vancouver
Island and north to Skagway, Alaska. Large scale charts filled with
historical anecdotes; colored aerial photos and an index of over 3,000
locations. While Stephen Hilson grew up in Michigan, an extended stay with his
brother in Alaska resulted in a love affair with the Pacific Northwest. He
soon discovered that he could combine this love with his skills as a
photographer and writer to make a living. He was fascinated by folklore of
each new region he explored by land or by sea, and he spent hours
researching the history of each area. At the age of 39, Stephen Hilson
died in Seattle after a fairly short battle with cancer, but his legacy
of historical atlases lives on. |

| Lonely Planet Alaska (Alaska, 6th Ed)
- Lonely Planet is at its guidebook best when it's covering isolated
regions where those little details of shelter, food, and transportation
are of more than passing concern. Just the section on Denali National Park
alone makes Jim DuFresne's guide worthwhile, illuminating the complex new
rules governing access to that sensational wildlife reserve, plus giving
information on dogsled demonstrations, hiking, rafting, backpacking, and
so on. The sections on climate, geography, and ecology are very well done,
as are the chapters on the Alaskan people and society. The transportation
chapters are vital and comprehensive, and the rest of the guide follows
suit, covering all of Alaska (no little task) with reliable acumen,
information, and savvy. |

|
| Alaska Wilderness : Exploring
the Central Brooks Range - This is Marshall's account of exploring
the area which is now Gates of the Arctic National Park. Marshall was the
first to systematically explore and describe it, in the 1930s.
Introductions by his brother George update the information to 1970. There
are wonderful, hilarious anecdotes. I read this to help plan my first trip
there (summer 2000); can't imagine going without it. |

The Alaska State Map
is a great companion to the Milepost 2002 :
Trip Planner for Alaska, Yukon Territory, British Columbia, Alberta &
Northwest Territories - A reader comments about Milepost 2002.
"I live here, and find this book to be nice to have around. I
purchase one every couple of years. Recreation activities for me usually
involve a lot of driving, often in remote and infrequently traveled areas.
The Milepost is an indispensable guide to construction, frost heaves, and
other road conditions. When you are barreling down a narrow, winding road
with a trailer in tow, it's nice to not have surprises. For the visitor to
Alaska, this book provides detailed information on sites to see, lodging,
fuel stations, etc. If you plan to drive to or around Alaska, this book is
a must have. Even if you don't plan a visit, the book makes a nice
memento. It is interesting to compare the new issue to the older ones and
see the changes over time. Yes, even in Alaska, progress marches on.
Enjoy, and have a safe trip."

| Alaska Atlas and Gazetteer
- This is the only collection of
detailed topographic maps covering all of Alaska! The majestic mountains,
immense glaciers, endless forests and countless other features that make
the 49th state such a special place all stand out in bold detail on these
rich, full-color maps. Special sections in this Atlas include a
temperature/precipitation/daylight hours chart, a mileage chart from
Alaska cities to numerous points in Canada and the Lower 48; a map showing
overland approaches to Alaska from the US Pacific Northwest through
Canada; a polar view of Alaska in relation to the rest of North America,
Asia and Europe; and a fold-out map showing all of Alaska with physical
relief. There are also street maps for the cities of Anchorage, Fairbanks
and Juneau. And, because most of the state is remote wilderness, there is
an Index of Placenames and Physical Features. You can use it to locate not
only cities and towns, but also mountains, peaks, rivers, lakes, bays,
points, and myriad other natural features as well.
I use these maps and really like them. They help me find all of those
out-of-the way, and little-known and interesting places that are hard to
find on a regular map. Jim |

purchases, the plotting of town sites, and surveys for railroads. Combined
