General Information About Yemen
After many political upsets, Yemen is slowly becoming known as
the "pearl of the Peninsula" by travelers. Although the country is gradually
modernizing, you can still find lots of things that are indicative of old-style
Arabia. There are still the wonderful palaces and the traditional from spicy
souqs.

Cities and Towns of Yemen
San
This area was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site In 1984. The town is so
perfectly preserved it is said that you can walk almost forever in the city
center area without seeing a single new building. The old city is famous for its
14,000 'tower houses' that were six or eight stories high and have been called
the world's first skyscrapers.
Shihara
It seems that Yemenis love to build their houses in difficult places and Shihara is such a
place. It is located atop a 8528-foot mountain that seems almost inaccessible from below.
Previously a base for resistance to the Ottomans during the 16th and 17th
centuries, it was the Royalist headquarters during the 1960s civil war. As
stunning as the location is, the architecture is simple. The
town's stone houses rise up to five stories, but are decorated only with dented
friezes and white plastering and present visitors with good examples of a very traditional,
archaic form of Yemeni mountain architecture.
Shibam
Lying at 2300m above sea level, at the foot of Jebel Kawkaban, is the
ancient village of Shibam. The town dates from the 2nd century AD. Shibam became an
important capital for the local Yafurid dynasty in the 9th century, when its
grand mosque (one of the oldest in Yemen) was built.
Be sure to see the old town gate and the souq,
which is the site of a very colorful Friday market.

Getting
To and Around Yemen You can get to Yemen by air from
most of western Europe, Russia, north, south and east Africa, the Middle East
and Asia. The majority of flights arrive and leave from San'a's airport. Buses
travel to Saudi Arabia and to the Oman border. There are no non-commercial ferry
services to/from Yemen, and it's very difficult to hitch a ride on the cargo
boats. If you hire a car, you can drive from Oman through Salalah or from Saudi
Arabia along the Tihama road.

Some
Things to See and Do in Yemen
Dar al-Hajar Palace
This five-storey summer palace sits at the peak of a protruding rock
formation. The current structure was extended in the 1930s from its original 18th-century ruins.
Many of the 17 rooms are lavishly furnished and their former uses are
well explained, most in English. Traditional Yemeni weddings are sometimes held on
Fridays outside the palace.
The palace is open daily from
8:00am-6:00pm.
Shihara
It seems that Yemenis love to build their houses in difficult places and Shihara is such a
