Situated on the beach side of the pool so you can enjoy views of both, it opens early for breakfast, and then switches to international and Mexican fare for lunch and dinner. Guacamole with totopos is a perennial favorite. Alfredo di Roma carries on the tradition of the original Italian restaurant where Fettuccine Alfredo was born. Authentic Italian cuisine prepared with only the freshest ingredients is served as candles flicker. Banderas Bay shimmers in the background as piano music floats through the air. An extensive selection of wines is offered, many from vertical collections that include 10 or 15 harvests from the same vine. For a long day at the beach or pool, or a quick lunch on the go, Caña Brava is your best bet. The open-air setting is quite casual, but menu items such as Ceviche Tostadas made with fresh marinated seafood go far beyond typical bar fare. Frosty tropical beverages, pico de gallo and other traditional Mexican snacks will keep you sunning without interruption.

Mayan Palace Puerto Vallarta - Puerto Vallarta could be crowned Mexico's quintessential beach destination. Yet it's actually much more, thanks to the city's desire to re-cast its image as hip, cultured, and cosmopolitan. Readers of Conde Nast magazine bestowed the city with the crown of "world's most friendly" in 2002. When you think of the Mexican Riviera, with its palm-fringed beaches, luxuriant jungle vegetations and posh resorts, lots of places come to mind. but no resort better typifies the classic Mexican beach vacation than does Puerto Vallarta. From its sleepy village roots, it has grown into one of Mexico's most loved destinations.

Of all of Mexico's resorts, Puerto Vallarta comes closest to being all things to all visitors. It delivers 'round-the-clock activity (or blissful seclusion), sophisticated amenities, and romantic dream-like natural setting. It's considered the ideal vacation spot for the first-time Mexico visitor, while also boasting enough diversity of activities to keep people coming back over and over again. Mayan Palace Puerto Vallarta is surrounded by championship golf courses, the world-class marina, shopping malls, apartment complex and excellent dining options.

Hotelito Desconocido

Hotelito Desconocido is a beachfront resort quite unlike any other. Where many resorts strive to offer an extravagant, high-consumption experience, this “small hotel” is a model of sustainable tourism, of ecologically sound hospitality. The location is the Playon de Mismaloya, a marine turtle sanctuary and sea bird habitat, along a pristine estuary on Mexico’s Pacific coast.

Relaxation and escape, obviously, are key to Hotelito Desconocido’s appeal. Contact with the outside world is minimal — there are no shops to browse, no local cafés or restaurants, and no nearby town to tour. There is, however, no shortage of sporting activities, from kayaking and sailing to mountain biking, fishing, even horseback riding. There is an emphasis on ecological activities as well; tours of the sea turtle habitats are available, as are bird-watching boat trips, and from January to July guests are welcome to participate in the Sea Turtle Liberation, which is not a political movement but a release of newly hatched turtles from the protected nesting area. Those more focused on their own creature comforts (and there’s nothing wrong with that) may prefer a massage or a spa treatment, or a few laps in the outdoor pool. Simply relaxing in one’s palafito is not frowned upon either — it would be difficult to match this level of quiet and peaceful seclusion at most resorts, in Mexico or elsewhere. Hotelito Desconocido is proof positive that just because “eco-luxury” is good for the planet doesn’t mean it is any less impressive an experience for the guests. The surroundings are breathtaking and the lifestyle is absolutely guilt-free, making this little hotel a truly unique place.

Think of Mexico and many of us think of the over-developed mega-resorts—which makes a place like Las Mañanitas such a welcome surprise, and such a well-kept secret. In fact it’s the restaurant, believe it or not, that gets most of the attention; but these 21 rooms are something special as well, a break from the tropical kitsch we’ve come to expect, a surprisingly elegant place. Cuernavaca, of course, is quite literally about as far as you can get from the seaside tourist traps; this historic town lies well inland, around an hour from Mexico City, and while the sand and surf are nowhere to be found, it’s a city of culture, with a number of archaeological sites and beautiful old haciendas, as well as a location conveniently close to the ancient village of Tepoztlán and the wide open spaces of its surrounding national park. Fitting, then, that Las Mañanitas specializes in the quiet life—its twenty-one rooms and suites surround gorgeous central gardens, each room with its own private terrace or patio.

Flamingos stand around a Japanese pond, or amidst sculpture gardens, as guests lounge by the swimming pool. The décor may not be everyone’s cup of tea, with its slightly formal and colonial look, but what the rooms may lack in visual impact the make up for in charm and comfort. black">The restaurant is justifiably famous, serving Continental cuisine alongside Mexican specialties, all on the terraces overlooking the gardens. It’s something of an open secret that the big resorts are a bit weak in this area; one more reason to gloat as you breathe in the crisp mile-high air.
