Sailing in Turkish waters -- Some
recommendations:
- International navigation rules should be scrupulously followed.
- The Turkish courtesy flag should be flown from 8 a.m. to sunset.
- It is best to avoid zig –zaging between Turkish and Greek waters.
- Yachtsmen should strictly refrain from taking any "archeological
souvenirs" from the coastal waters and keeping them on board, since the
penalty is confiscation of the yacht.
- According to navigation law, it is forbidden to take passengers on board
between two ports in Turkey.
- In order to preserve both nature and environment, it is necessary to
adhere to the internationally recognized norms.
If the above clauses are not respected, a penalty will be
applied in accordance with international rules.
When to sail Turkish coast:
In summer, the winds (called "Meltem") normally blow from the
north-west to south-east on the central and south Aegean. In the early and late
summer, "Meltem" blows less and there are days of little or no wind in
all. Generally the Meltem will die down at night and then resume the next day
around midday. It can also blow day and night for days on end in the gulfs The
wind follows the coast from the west and becomes weaker towards the heads of the
gulfs. Gusts are particularly violent of the north coast of the Gulf of Gökova
and the Gulf of Hisarönü. The Meltem also blows in a westerly direction along
the Mediterranean coast as far as the Gulf of Finike.
Around the Gulf of Antalya, there both land and sea breezes
with the latter predominating generally between the south and south-west. In the
morning, there will often be a land breeze, blowing from the north. Winds in the
spring and autumn are almost equally divided between north and south, but in
winter, winds and gales are predominantly from the south.

Another of nature’s gift to Turkey are its rivers. They
provide perfect conditions for canoeing, skiing, and rafting. These rivers are:

Turkish seas are a heaven for windsurfers. The bays around

sport (Antalya is also suitable). Enthusiasts will be pleased with the very reasonable
cost, international standards, ideal climate, secluded bays, and

GOLF
Turkey's historical and natural beauties include the well
maintained and secluded golf courses. Golfers will be delighted with the 18-hole
golf links, which are maintained up to international standards. In addition
there are open tournaments. There two famous golf resorts in Turkey: Belek (Antalya)
and Istanbul.
SPELUNKING
With numerous caves in various regions, Turkey is an ideal
place for spelunkers. Spelunking (exploring caves), highlights many different
aspects of Turkey. The most beautiful and interesting caves are located in the
Toros region, in southeast and northwest Anatolia and Thrace.
HUNTING
Foreigners can only hunt in parties organized by Turkish
travel agencies which have been authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture and
Rural Affairs. These agencies provide all information concerning seasons,
authorized zones, permits, weapons, and ammunition.
SKI AND WINTER SPORTS
Winter sport resorts in Turkey are generally located in
forested mountains of average height. The following ski and winter sport centers
are easily accessible by road or by Turkish Airlines domestic flights:

TREKKING / HIKING
One of the best ways to get away from the bustle of big cities and the stress of work is escape into the wilderness. This desire has led
to the rapid development of a tourism known as nature tourism.
Hiking requires a certain amount of effort and fitness, but
is very economical when compared with other tourist and sport activities. By
hiking, virgin areas, mountains, plateaus, villages, cities, and ancient ruins
in Turkey can be explored. Hiking does not harm the environment and it is also
inexpensive, so it is the perfect solution for a different vocation.

PLATEAU HIKING
The plateaus of Turkey are a unique experience in themselves.
The high plateaus are meadows with large grasslands, plenty of water and natural
beauty.
The Tekir and Bürücek meadows on the Toros (Taurus)
mountains will present you with scenes from a hidden paradise. The Black Sea
region plateaus have natural beauty and people there still observe the original
meadow life of old. Artvin – Kafkasör, Rize – Ayder , Trabzon – Kadirga,
Karadag, Erikbeli, Hidirnebi, and Giresun – Kümbet, Sinop – Guzfinduk, Ordu
– Keyfelan, - Cambasi are some of the most spectacular areas in that region.
ORNITHOLOGY
Turkey, situated at the crossroads of three continents, forms
a bridge between the reproductive areas of birds, in the north and their winter
nests in the south. One of the most important stops for birds along this route
is Izmir-Cesmealti The area was declared a natural heritage region in 1985,
offering the possibility of natural and cultural activities.
"Kus Cenneti," Bird Paradise National Park, near Bandirma, is another important example where natural and cultural values
coexist. This area provides different environments. Bird Paradise is a real
heaven both for bird-lovers and ornithologists. Important places where different
bird types exist include: Büyük Menderes Delta (near Ephesus), Lake Seyfe
(near Cappadocia), Sultan Marshes (near Cappadocia) and Göksu Delta (near
Silifke).
Shopping!
I suppose, because of all of the traditional outdoor
markets in Turkey, shopping could be placed on the list of interesting things to
do outdoors in Turkey.
Turkey is a great place for shopping. The wide variety of Turkish art offers unique and original materials for the
giftware market. Since the traditional handicrafts differ from city to city,
unique products can easily found. And, thanks to earlier civilizations,

The arts of working with mother of pearl, of marbling of decorating glassware
and ceramics of viewing carpets and rugs, and of jewelry - making have come till
today from thousands of years. Check the Traditional
Turkish Arts page for some good information on what to look for when you
are shopping the markets and bazaars of this wonderful country.
