General Information on European Travel
Europe seems to be the first foreign destination for most citizens of the United States. In fact, more than 7.5 million people cross the Atlantic each year. This is more than either Canada or Mexico.
This page is designed to be your beginning for everything you might need for a
European vacation. Check the
European
Travel Commission for general information on Europe.

a foreign language. Being able to speak at least some of the language in the
country you are visiting will help you have a better time and enjoy your trip
more. Jim.
Passports and Visas
A passport is an official document issued by the United States government that certifies the identity and citizenship of the holder and grants him or her its protection during travel abroad. You will need a passport to leave the United States, to enter each of the countries you plan to visit on your trip, and to return to the united states. For complete passport information
go to the
United States Passport Services Passport
page
or click on the
Getting Away Passport and Visa page.
A Visa is an official authorization appended to a passport allowing entry
into a specific country. Visas are normally issued by the country you wish
to visit while a passport is issued by the United States government.
You can check the

Visa page

Tourist
Offices
One of the best ways to begin your planning is to contact the European tourist offices for the places you want to visit.
You can check them out online, write them, or even give them a call. You can get tons of information from these offices
that will really help you with your planning. Send for the 60-page booklet, Planning Your Trip to Europe which is available from
the
European Travel Commission.
To obtain a copy write to Europe Planner, P.O. Box 1754, New York, NY 10185.
This excellent booklet is filled with transportation information and thumbnail
sketches of each country.
Travel Agents
I believe I know quite a bit about travel and traveling. In fact, I had a call-in/talk radio show on travel in Atlanta for almost four
years. On this show I would spend about two hours just answering travel related questions and, when I got into trouble, I would
go to my travel agent. One of the best things about a travel agent is that their services are normally free as they are paid through commissions from
travel suppliers such as airlines, hotels, cruise lines, and car-rental companies. However, as these travel companies continue to
lower their commission rates, it is possible that sometime in the future we may have to pay for these "services."
A good travel agent can tailor travel plans just about any way you want them. They will take you plans, objectives, interests, and even your budget considerations
into consideration when helping you with your travel plans. They can arrange all manner of international transportation to include
air, sea, rail, car rental, and even chartered motor coach. They will also help you with passport information (and visa details), tax requirements
and considerations, and much more. You can also learn a lot about special fares, early-booking discounts, and other special offers.
Therefore you should always take advantage of the services offered by a good travel agent. Seek out a good one by checking
with friends and family for recommendations. Meet with the agent in person and see if you get along. And, while you are in the office,
look at the office and see if it seems to be organized and have a friendly staff.
And,
if you are having trouble finding a good, and nice, travel agent - try mine. Her name is Teresa Bilotti and you can contact her at
1-800-942-9693.
