HEM Hotel Amsterdam
I have found this to be a pretty nice place to stay in Amsterdam.
It is located right on the outer ring with convenient connections
to the city via bus and tram (Tram #2, Westlandgracht tram stop).

Hotel Spaander in Volendam
Located on the shores of the picturesque Lake IJssel along the top
of the renowned Volendam Dike, is the wonderful Hotel Spaander.
The building is truly classical with a tastefully historical
ambiance and contemporary comfort. Throughout the building are
over 1,000 thousand 19th century paintings, many of which may be
used by long ago patrons as payment for their room or meal. The
functional rooms offer a great location for overnight stays with
some looking out over the lake. There is also a fine restaurant in
the hotel. Contact Jim for additional information or to make
reservations.

Home Exchange in Holland
I received a nice email from Agatha and Nico Vasseur who live in Holland and
like to exchange their home once a year for your home for vacation or holiday.
You can click on
Holland Home Exchange, to visit their site where you will see the
following: "When you would like to spend your holiday in Holland, contact us.
We are open for every attractive offer, if not now maybe next year. And
although we are out of small children, we have a small camping bed, baby bath,
changing table and a high chair available."
Most of the site is in Dutch, but there is some English and they speak English.
If you speak Dutch, and want to go right to the exchange information, click on

Suggestions for
Dining in Holland
Fodor's Restaurant Suggestions
Restaurant De Nissen, Amsterdam
This Old Dutch-style restaurant is
one you quite probably will have to ask someone for in order to find it.
Situated in the heart of Amsterdam, the inside of the restaurant is filled with
dining nooks and crannies that bring to mind an old wine cellar. The menu is
typically Dutch and everything is reasonably priced. My suggestion would be to
try one of the fresh fish selections on the menu, such as lobster bisque for a
starter, and fried filets of flounder as your main dish. But whatever you order,
be sure to top off your meal with a nice piece of hot apple pie with cinnamon
ice cream. The restaurant is located at Rokin 95. Call ahead for
directions at 020-624 28 25.

Some of My Favorites
in Holland
One of the favorite things I enjoy doing in
Holland is getting on the public transportation and just
exploring. It is also a great place to jump on a train
getting off when you reach a town or village that looks
interesting. Doing this I have found many interesting places
to visit and see and met a lot of nice people.
I also enjoy a
good lunch of fresh-baked bread and a hunk of cheese eaten alongside of a
countryside canal. Try this when you are in the countryside instead of
working so hard looking for a restaurant.
Here are just some of the things
that are favorites for me in Holland:
The flowers of Aalsmeer. Busses leave from the
Haarlemmermeerstation in Amsterdam every half-hour. This is the largest
flower auction anywhere! Don't miss it but, be sure to get there early as
the auction is normally over by noon. The Dutch Open-Air Museum in Arnhem. Take the train from the
Central Station and spend the day. The wonderful village of Delft. Take the train from Amsterdam or
the tram from The Hague. The cheese market at Alkmaar. Take the train from Central Station
in Amsterdam (leaves around 9 and again around 9:30). The Gouda Farmers' Cheese Market on Thursdays in Gouda.
The wonderful cathedral in Haarlem. The villages of Volendam and Marken.
The miniature village of Madurodam in The Hague.
