General
Information
I love Holland and visit there as often as possible. If you have never visited there - you should. However, before you go you should take the time to familiarize yourself with the country
so you will be able to get around and see all you would like to see. The Netherlands
Board of Tourism (212-370-7360) can provide you with some excellent
travel and tourism information along with a lot of good destination information.
Most people fly into Amsterdam's Airport
Schiphol and then transfer to the city of Amsterdam by either train (I suggest taking the train) or taxi to begin their tour of this wonderful country.
Click on Amsterdam
Airport Schiphol for an informational guide to Schiphol Airport and on
The International Airport
Guide for information on the services at over 100
international airports. Additional information may be found at Schiphol Airport.
Amsterdam Tours

and, along with her native language, speaks English and Italian. She may be

Currency
and Money Matters
The currency for the Netherlands is the euro. At the time of
conversion to the euro, the exchange rate was as follows: 2.20371 Netherlands
guilders = 1 euro. You should check
for the current exchange rate at Onada.com
and get a cheat sheet.
The euro is the single currency of the European Monetary
Union, which was adopted by 11 Member States from 1 January 1999. The 11 Member
States are Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the
Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Finland. Greece became the 12th Member State
to adopt the Euro on 1 January 2001. The name "euro" was chosen by the
European Heads of State or Government at the European Council meeting in Madrid
in December 1995.
There will be 7 euro notes and 8 euro coins. The notes are in
denominations of 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, and 5 euro. The denominations of
coins are 2 euro, 1 euro, 50 euro cent, 20 euro cent, 10 euro cent, 5 euro cent,
2 euro cent, and 1 euro cent.
If you have used "foreign" currency in the past in
your travels, you will find that, just like using than old national currency, it
is pretty much the same. The real difference you will see is when you travel to
other countries in the euro area. There will be no more currency exchange -
which means no more exchange commission to be paid - no more time spent
calculating price comparisons, and no more time wasted shopping around for the
best exchange rate.
Click on Quest
for just about all the information you will need for the euro.

Holland Geography
Popular but incorrect etymology
claims that Holland
hol land<
Hol land which means hollow land inspired by the
low-lying geography of Holland. Aside from coastal dunes, most of
the surface consist of polder landscape, lying well below sea-level,
and only kept from flooding by continuous drainage, for which in the
earlier centuries, a typical Dutch windmills were used. When one of the peat plateaus which protect the land from the sea
was carelessly cultivated, a catastrophic storm floods destroyed and
washed out the regions of Zealand and Frisia shocking the entire
Holland. Since then, its government imposes death penalties to those
who commit careless decisions regarding water management.

Holland’s history
In the 13th to 15th centuriesThis conquest resulted in the creation of two divisions of
Holland: the South Holland and the North Holland. In 1432, it became part of the Burgundian Netherlands. In the
16th century, the region became densely urbanized and the majority
of its populace lived in the city. In the 17th century, Holland became a part of the larger Dutch
Federation and became the center of the rebellion, politics, economy
and culture of the United Provinces, making it the wealthiest nation
