Getting To Holland
By Air
By Train
By Bus
By Ferry
By Cruise Ship
By Air...
For most people, especially from the United States, their first visit of Holland
is from the air as they arrive at Schiphol Airport. The airport is served by airlines from around
the world and is the home base of KLM, Holland's national airline. As many times as I have flown into this wonderful airport I find it interesting to note that my luggage has
almost always been at the claim area when I arrived there and I have seldom had
to wait on my luggage. This just points to the efficiency of the Dutch. I also enjoy the free luggage trolleys so I do not have to carry my luggage around the airport.
It is also a great place to be if your flight is delayed as there are good
restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Click on Amsterdam
Airport Schiphol for an informational guide to Schiphol Airport and on
The International Airport
Guide for information on the services at over 100
international airports.
Another way to Amsterdam is on Singapore Airlines. They operate non-stop service from Newark to Amsterdam. Call 1.800.742.3133 or visit Singapore Airlines
It is very easy to get into Amsterdam from the airport as there is taxi, bus, and train service. As the taxi fare can be pretty steep I would recommend the bus or the taxi. My personal choice is the train that takes you right into Central Station. You can also take the train to The Hague and Rotterdam from Schiphol. About the hardest thing for many people to do is just get out of the terminal without beginning to spend all of their guilders. There are over 50 shops filled with about 50,000 items to separate you from your money. And, as if that were not enough, there is actually a casino in the terminal!
By Train...
There are rail connections into Holland from Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland.
By Bus...
You can reach Holland from most European centers by coach as well as from London (via Hovercraft) which takes about 10 hours. Contact Hoverspeed Ltd. (0171/730-0202 or 0181/554-7061 in the United Kingdom) for additional details.
By Ferry...
From England you can reach Holland via the Sealink car ferry from the port of Harwich arriving at the Hook of Holland near Rotterdam. North Sea Ferries also operates a rail/sea service between Hull and Rotterdam. There is also a crossing by ferry or jetfoil from Dover to Ostend, in Belgium, which is slightly shorter, but entails more changes between rail and ship.
By Cruise Ship...
Along with ports in Holland being ports of call for many cruise ships, Cunard's Queen Elizabeth 2 offers a luxurious trip from New York to Southampton from which you can reach Holland via train, car-ferry, or air.
