Eisenach
Frankfurt
If you have a layover in Frankfurt (and many people sometimes do have
several hours layover here), here are a few suggestions for something to do so
you will not have to stay inside of the airport.
There is a two-and-a-half hour bus tour (with English-speaking guides) which leaves from the outside of the main tourist information office at Romerberg 27 daily at 10 AM and 2 PM, March through October. The tour takes in all of the major sites and are offered
throughout the year. The tour includes a visit to the Goethe Haus.
Grey Line (069/230-492) offers tours that last about two-hours that normally includes a snack.
Deutsche Touring (Am Romerhof 17 - 069/790-3268) also offers a pretty good variety of tours. You may be able to find one from them that fits your needs.
There are walking tours offered (069/2123-8849) with several different tours at various prices. You can even tailor the tour to suit your needs.
You can take the Ebbelwei Express (Cider Express) which is a brightly painted old-time streetcar from which you can see most of the major attractions. The ride lasts about 40 minutes and you can make notes on the areas you would like to come back to and visit them on your own. 069/2132-2425.
Although quite a bit higher priced, you can have a personalized tour arranged by the
tourist office. Tours are led by English-speaking guides and cost from DM 125 to 150 per hour, plus tax. Call Mr. Wolf at 069/2123-8953.
You could rent a bike (at the Goetheturm, or Goethe Tower 069/49111 or at the Train Station, 069/265-4834) and do it on your own.
You could also follow the walking tour in Fodor's Germany. It is very good. Follow the tour for the Old Town starting in Romerberg Square. To find the book, click on Book Shelf! and then Travel Books and type in Fodor's Germany in the search box.

Prominently located on the western side of the
Inner Alster Lake shore in Germany, The Fairmont Hotel Vier
Jahreszeiten lies in the heart of the prime retail and commercial
district. Founded in 1897, the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten has
welcomed its guests from all over the world for more than a 110 years.
Ceaseless concern to offer each guest the greatest possible comfort has
led to it being consistently ranked among the top hotels in the world.
Few other hotels in Germany or elsewhere can match its rich blend of
individuality, tradition and distinction. The public areas of the
Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten are furnished with a collection of
exquisite 16th- and 17th-century Flemish Gobelin tapestries, baroque
cupboards and Renaissance chests. This luxurious Hamburg Hotel offers a
veritable treasure trove of history, luxury and elegance in one.
In addition to impeccable service and luxurious
accommodation, you will find some of the best restaurants in Hamburg
such as the Haerlin Restaurant, which serves classical and modern
cuisine. The Lounge, at the heart of the hotel, creates a unique
atmosphere of elegance and cosiness. We recommend afternoon tea in front
of the fire while listening to live piano music.
The
philosophy of Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten is determined by its
inimitable ambience, which has evolved over more than a 100 years,
deliberately avoiding uniformity and monotonous functionality. All 156
rooms and suites have their own individual touch. This uniqueness is
experienced with a breathtaking view over Germany's Inner Alster Lake,
which can be enjoyed from many rooms. |

Schau ins Land
is a monthly German audio magazine, published by
Champs-Elysees,
for the intermediate to advanced speaker and designed to take their speaking and listening comprehension to the next
level. Every issue takes the form of an hour long radio broadcast featuring interviews with German celebrities as well as up to date news from the
worlds of art, business, literature, politics etc. Previous guests on the programs
include Boris Becker, Oskar Lafontaine and Helmut Kohl. Each magazine comes with a complete transcript and a comprehensive glossary
together with optional linguistic exercises. Available on both CD and cassette.
I know from experience that it is always better to travel in a foreign country
when you can at least speak a little of the language.
