Most visitors get around England by using surface means. That would include using the train system, touring by bus or coach, or driving their own car. Although there is extensive air travel possibilities, unless the visitor is in a great hurry, air travel is normally not used to travel from place to place within England. However, we will attempt to cover all modes of transportation on this page.

Train

England has an adequate rail service and are one of the more popular means of transportation for the visitor. Train travel within England can be a rewarding and relaxing way to get around. There are many scenic lines running throughout the  sparsely populated countryside. And, for those trips between the major cities, there are several fast trains travel at speeds of up to 125mph delivering you to, for example, from London to Manchester in less than three hours.

Bus and Coach

Coaches and buses operate throughout the country. In England, long-distance express buses are usually called coaches, while in towns they are normally called buses. In may places throughout England, there are separate bus and coach stations. Where coaches and buses run on the same route, coaches are more expensive but much quicker than are the buses. There are many smaller regional operators across the country, several forming part of the Stagecoach or First networks.

When you are away from the major cities you will want to seek help from the locals as bus timetables are often quite complex. This is because they are designed to serve schools and industry rather than the vacationer. Additionally, it can be hard to find weekend services (and even midday service) in many areas. The best thing to do is to phone Traveline or double-check at a Tourist Information Centre (TIC) before planning your day's activities around a bus that you later find out only runs periodically.

Auto

Drivers of EU-registered vehicles will find bringing a car into England pretty easy. The car must have registration papers and a nationality plate, and the driver must have insurance. Visitors from the United States and Canada can rent a car and operate it with their local driver's license. If you're going to drive yourself, you will want to be sure to remember that you will quite possible be driving on the "wrong side of the road." You will also find that finding a parking place can sometimes become a nightmare as it is almost impossible to find a place to park in many city centers.

All of the major cities have good taxi service. London's famous black cabs are excellent but expensive. Minicabs are cheaper competitors, but you can't flag these down on the street. Outside London and other big cities, taxis are usually reasonably priced.

Want a car, but don't want to rent. If you need a car for at least 17 days, and you are at least 18 years old, Getting Away and Auto Europe can hook you up with a new Peugeot through the exclusive Peugeot Buy Back Program. Or, if you want to leave the driving to a professional while you sit back and enjoy the scenery, check out the Chauffeur Service offered by Getting Away and Auto Europe. You can also find sports cars, vans and even luxury vehicles at Auto Europe. In Australia, France, Germany, New Zealand and Spain, you can rent a motor home.
