Hotel Eilean Iarmain - Built in 1888, this small, privately owned hotel has retained its Victorian charm and old-world character. Hotel Eilean Iarmain is situated on the small rocky bay of Isle Ornsay in the south of Skye, with expansive views over the Sound of Sleat to the Knoydart hills. The 16 bedrooms are decorated and furnished in traditional style and include four new suites, housed in the restored stables, one of which is specially suitable for disabled guests. Each bedroom has its own charm: 'The Tower Room', paneled in old pine, and 'The Leabaidh Mhor', with a canopied bed from nearby Armadale Castle, to name two of them. There are log fires in the reception rooms, and a paneled dining room where candlelit dinners can be enjoyed overlooking the bay. The dinner menu, of five courses, combines imaginative cooking with the variety of fresh local produce, including fish and shellfish landed at the old stone pier, oysters and game from the estate, home baked bread and oatcakes. The extensive wine list has been selected by the proprietors with the aim of offering some unusual wines with fascinating historical provenances, as well as a very good range of more famous wines. Hotel Eilean Iarmain is open year round. For additional information about this hotel, or to make a reservation, click on Getting Away Accommodations Information and Reservations.

Hotel Eilean Iarmain, Eilean Iarmain, Isle of Skye

Kinloch Lodge is an elegant country house dating from the early 1600s, whose gardens slope down to meet the sea loch, Na Dal, on the Isle of Skye in the Highlands of Scotland. It is the ancestral home of Lord Macdonald of Macdonald, High Chief of Clan Donald, who runs it as a small, very personal hotel with his wife, the world-renowned cookery writer Claire Macdonald. In 1998 the Macdonalds built a new house adjacent to the Lodge and in similar style, known as Kinloch, providing 15 bedrooms in all. The setting is romantic, beautiful and incomparably peaceful. Secluded between a wooded hillside and the sea loch on two sides, the surrounding area is fascinating for those who love and appreciate nature, with notable flowers and plants, five golden eagles on the hill behind the house, seals galore and a colony of otters. The bird life is varied and plentiful. Here, in view of Skye and the spectacular Cuillin Hills, the Macdonalds dispense the warmest hospitality from their family home. The atmosphere is very relaxed, with comfortable rooms decorated in traditional country house style, log fires and a five-course dinner that features the freshest of ingredients that are naturally available in season.
