Barcaldine Castle - Barcaldine, the 'Black Castle' is one of the few mediaeval castles in Scotland which is still habitable and which appears practically unchanged.  The castle was built as a military outpost in the late 16th Century by Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy (Black Duncan) who held a string of 7 castles across Scotland. Barcaldine is last remaining in Campbell hands. The castle is connected to the Massacre of Glencoe and Appin Murder. Roderick Campbell is a descendent of Black Duncan. He (+wife and 3 daughters) now own the castle as was well as renting the nearby Barcaldine House (also formerly a family home) offering a similar style of bed and breakfast accommodation. Our two principal guest bedrooms are comfortably and tastefully furnished with antiques and family memorabilia.  Both are spacious and have heating, colour TV, mini fridge, hospitality trays with Scottish shortbread and mineral water, soft fluffy towels, heather scented soap and local area information. Guest have the use of the atmospheric Laird's Parlour sitting room with roaring open fire on cold evenings. Complimentary sherry and chocolates await you. Large private garden with wonderful views. We are located 9 miles north of Oban off the A828 Oban to Fort William road near Benderloch.  Turn off the road at the village school and after 2 miles you will see a brown sign for Barcaldine Castle.  Glasgow airport is 90 miles - 2.5 hours drive and Edinburgh 110 miles - 3 hours drive. The Big House - Eriska is a small, secluded island less than 100 miles from Glasgow and Edinburgh. It is the only island in Britain solely devoted to the care and wellbeing of guests. The Big House was built in 1884 at the height of Scottish baronial style. Blazing log fires in the burr oak paneled Hall make for a very Scottish holiday. So does a glass of malt whisky in the library. Since 1973 Eriska has been owned by the Buchanan-Smith family. They set high priority on peace and tranquility, and these qualities attract people back to the island again and again. Eriska lives up to the Scottish country house requirement for 'A good table' throughout the day from the delicious breakfasts to the acclaimed formal candlelit dinners. Sporting facilities include 6-hole golf course, 17-metre swimming pool, steam room, sauna, gymnasium, all weather tennis court, croquet, golf putting and clay pigeon shooting. The island is virtually a nature reserve with designated nature trails. Seals, otters, badgers and roe deer are all around. Eriska has its own road bridge to link with the mainland. It is only 30 minutes to the seaport of Oban, whence steamers ply to Iona and Staffa. Mainland attractions include Glencoe and Inverary Castle, seat of the Clan Campbell.
