Getting To
Rome
Rome is very east to get to because, as I am sure you already
know, "All roads lead to Rome." That may seem funny to say, but it is pretty
much true. There is a great road system in Italy that makes this saying almost
completely true. Add to this the fact that it is a major air terminal for Italy,
and one of the places where it seem almost all of the trains converge, and it
becomes even more true.
| And, although it is not actually a port city,
Rome's port of Civitavecchia is easy to reach by train from the Termini Station,
and vice versa, as is the AirPortShuttle which can also get you from the port to
Rome, if your cruise line does not offer a transfer service. You can also take
the bus from the port of Civitavecchia or rent a taxi or car. |
 |
If you go to
www.civitavecchia.com and click on
"Services" and then on "Trains," you will find information on how to get
to Rome from the port via rail. There are dozens of trains daily that make the
journey that takes about one hour. I believe this is the best way to get to Rome
from the port city of Civitavecchia. You can also take the AirPortShuttle
www.airportshuttle.it which also
offers service to Rome from the port.

Getting Around Rome
Rome has two underground lines (Metro), the Metropolitana A from Via Ottaviano
via Termini station to Via Anagnina, and Metropolitana B between Termini Station
and Exhibition City (EUR) (Via Laurentina). The lines are easy to
understand with excellent signage in the stations. Both day and monthly passes are
available. There is also a 28km (17-mile) network of trams consisting of eight routes in
Rome. The bus service in Rome is very good. The network is extensive
and complements the metro and tram systems. The fare structure is integrated
between the various modes. Buy a flat-fare ticket or a weekly pass in advance
from a roadside or station machine. Information is available from the ATAC booth
in front of the Termini station. Taxis in Rome are relatively
expensive, with extra charges for night service, luggage and taxis called by
telephone. All charges are listed on a rate card displayed in the cab with an
English translation. Taxis can only be hailed at strategically located stands or
by telephone. Avoid taxis that are not metered. A 10% tip is expected by taxi
drivers and this is sometimes added to the fare for foreigners. Whenever
possible, I avoid taking a taxi and rely on the bus, underground, or trams.

Acquerello Italiano
is a bi-monthly Italian audio magazines for the intermediate to advanced speaker
that is designed to take their speaking and listening comprehension to the next level. Every issue,
which is published by Champs-Elysees,
takes the form of an hour long radio broadcast featuring interviews with Italian celebrities as well as up to date news from the
worlds of art, business, literature, politics etc. Previous guests on the programs
include Giulio Andreotti, Alberto Tomba and Federico Fellini. Each magazine comes with a complete transcript and a comprehensive glossary
together with optional linguistic exercises. Available on both CD and cassette.
I have always found that it is always a better, and much more enjoyable trip,
when you can at least speak a little of the language of your host country.
