By Air...
Domestic air travel varies in frequency according to the time of the year. The principal domestic carrier is Olympic Airways (1.800.223.1226 in the US and 01.966.6666 in Greece), which operates out of
Athens's West Terminal at Ellinikon Airport. Other airlines in Greece include Air Greece (01.325.5011), Cronus Airlines (01.331.5515), and LTU International Airways (01.323.4414). There are also charter companies that can fly you throughout Greece and especially to the islands.
Flights in Greece
By Rail...
There is a good, although rather slow compared to other European train service, rail service in Greece. There are IC express trains from Athens to Thessaloniki and Patras. There is also a line in the Peloponnese and this
narrow-gauge line makes for an interesting and pleasant way to see Southern Greece. The Greek Railway Organization, or OSE, has its main offices in Athens near Omonia Square on Karolou Street (01.522.4302 for Peloponnese and 01.522.2491 for Northern Greece). Greece is one of 17 counties in which you can use Eurailpasses. You can also purchase a Greece Flexipass Rail 'n Fly in conjunction with Olympic Airways or the Balkan Flexipass, which covers first-class train travel through Greece as well as Bulgaria, Romania, Macedonia, Turkey, and Yugoslavia.

By Road...
There is an extensive and inexpensive regional bus system (KTEL) in Greece with most major cities having connections to towns and villages in its vicinity. Visit the local KTEL office to check routes. Buses from Athens travel throughout Greece. For additional information you can call 01.512.4910 or 01.831.7153. For more comfortable coach accommodations try the
Tavlaridou Travel Agency at 01.522.1048 which offers more comfortable coach trips with coaches that have air-conditioning. And, as I have been there when it was well over 100 degrees, this can be very nice!
I would try to avoid driving in Greece. Particularly in the large cities. It is much easier and cheaper to take taxis or public transportation. You can also sometimes find a taxi driver who will act as a guide and take you to areas well outside of the larger cities. However, it is important that you strike a bargain before setting out on a long taxi ride into the countryside. Here is a link for a good taxi driver that will do just that for you. George The Taxi Driver!
