Matt's Greece Travel Guide

practical information for the travelers, along with interesting stories and

Athens is one of my favorite cities. I love the history - I love the architecture - I love the shopping (and I hate shopping!) - I love the people - and, I especially love the food.
The Athens Survival Guide is an interesting
place to get started on the planning for your trip to Athens. Another great site for information on Athens is the Sonaco
Travel Club guide to Athens. Here you will find general information
on the city, including some great links for things to see and do and
a search engine for accommodations.
It has been said, just as for Rome, that this is a place where all roads lead. And, with such wonderful treasures to see here, it is no wonder. The legendary building of the Acropolis, including the Parthenon, the wonderful Plaka shopping area and the ritzy neighborhoods of the Kolonaki, the National Archaeological Museum, and much more make this a place you will enjoy visiting. But, as the roads lead into Athens, they also lead out of Athens and to the port of Piraeus where the ships and ferries leave several times daily for excursions to the Greek Islands.
By Road Out Of Athens
The mountains that surround Greece - Mt. Pendeli to the north, Mt. Hymettos to the east, and Mt.. Parnis and Mt. Aigaleo to the west - are filled with engaging historical sites and small villages. Places such as Delphi (one of my personal favorites), the Northern Sporades, Evia, Cpirus,
Thessaly, Northern Greece, and of course, the wonderful Peloponnese. Northern Peloponnese with such wonderful places as Mycenae, Nauplion, and Olympia and the Southern Peloponnese of Arcadia, Laconia, and Messinia.

By Sea Out Of Athens
The short drive out of Athens to the port of Piraeus (See Piraeus) where you can take a ferry or a cruise ship to the wonderful islands offshore: Corfu, a miniature Italy in the Northern Ionian Sea at the entrance to the Adriatic; Crete, the Megalonissi of the Greeks; Rhodes and the Dodecanese; the Northern Islands of the Aegean of Samos, Chios, Lesbos, and Limnos; and the wonderful Cyclades of the Central Aegean Sea including Andros, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Tinos, and Santorini.
