General Information About Denmark

Your travel source with a personal touch!

Denmark is a "Land of the Sea." It encompasses a mainland peninsula at the top of Europe and contains over 400 islands. It is a land of natural contrasts from rolling fields to deep forests and thousands of miles of shoreline filled with beaches. It is steeped in rich history and makes a great place for a vacation or holiday. The food is wonderful; the shopping is gratifying to exhilarating, from the shops of the large cities to the market places in the small towns and villages; the abundance of water makes it perfect for water sports, being it fishing, boating, or just laying on the beach; being the land of Vikings, kings, and queens makes it perfect for history lovers; and, the Danes themselves make it a wonderful place to visit.

If you are familiar and comfortable with the climate of New England in the United States, you will feel right at home in Denmark. The Danish climate is more solar than polar and more dry than wet, thanks to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream. The average daily temperatures (in Fahrenheit) are:

Months Temperature
January & February             32
March 35
April 44
May 53
June 60
July 64
August 63
September 57
October 49
November 42
December 37

This is one of those countries where you will want to take clothing you can layer with a combination of long-sleeved shirts, pullovers, light jackets, and, in the winter, a heavy coat. Medium-weight clothing is recommended as a base for your travel wardrobe. A raincoat and umbrella might be a good idea during the summer months. And, in the winter, an overcoat is necessary and suggested during the fall and early spring. And, for those countryside hikes, and just walking along the many cobblestone streets you will encounter, comfortable walking shoes are a must.

The currency in Denmark (including the Faroe Islands and Greenland) is the Krone. Exchange rates are normally around $1 = DKK 6.50. As rates do change, it is suggested that you check ahead of time.

Currency Exchange - Get your currency needs managed in advance! Many airports, railroad stations, bus depots, and other points of entry have no currency exchange. When currency exchange is available in airports, lines can be long and rates can be "sky high". These long waits and usurious fees can be a nightmare.  Order in advance from All Foreign Currency right online. It's fast, easy, and you save time and money! The can also provide you with Travelers' checks, bank drafts, and transfers. U.S. dollars are not accepted everywhere and rates can be atrocious! Current Exchange Rate: Check Today's Exchange Rate

Banking Hours are normally Monday through Friday 10:00 to 4:00 and on Thursday being open until 6:00. You can also find many 24-hour change machines in Copenhagen for the exchange of U.S. dollars and other cash currencies. You can also exchange money at many money changing stores, airports, harbor, and railway stations.

Store Hours vary a bit depending upon the area of the country you are in. Normally, Monday through Thursday the hours are from 9:00 or 10:00 to 6:00. On Friday, many stores are open to 7:00 or 8:00. On Saturday, 9:00 or 10:00 to Noon or sometimes, as late as 2:00. In major towns several supermarkets stay open until 6:00 or 7:00. And, for Sunday shoppers, most stores and shops in vacation area are open on Sunday in the summer.

The normal electric current in Denmark is 220 volt AC in 50 cycles, and prongs for outlets differ from those in the United States. So, bring along transformers for electrical appliances such as hair dryers and shavers. Some hotels will provide hair dryers and adapters. You can also find them in some of the larger stores in Denmark. Lap-top computers that are made to work on both 110 and 220 volts can be used in Denmark with an adapter since the prongs differ from the ones in North America. Mobile phones bought in North America cannot be used in Denmark. Find the converter you will need in the Getting Away Travel Store. Additionally, you will find just about anything and everything you will need when you travel. Across the state, country, or to a destination on the other side of the world, you'll find what you need in the Getting Away Travel Store!

The tap water in Denmark is perfectly safe to drink. However, as all of our bodies tend to get used to drinking the water at our home and sometimes cannot quickly adapt to "foreign" water, you may want to purchase bottled water. That is normally what I do. And anyway, I like to keep a bottle in my backpack as I always seem to get thirsty when there is no drinking water to be found. You will find bottled drinking water just about everywhere. However, unless you like it carbonated, be sure to ask for "still water" or spring water.

You will probably not have to worry about any type of language barrier while in Denmark. So, throw away the phrase book (or at least don't worry about carrying it around with you) as most everyone speak English in Denmark. However, if you do want to learn the language, or at least, some of it. the following link will get you started.

I have found that it helps to know at least a little bit of the language as I travel in other countries. You do not have to be able to be a fluent speaker, but knowing a few key words and phrases will really help. I have found that, although almost everywhere I go I can find someone who speaks English, knowing just a few words of the local language can really be a help. And, it lets others know I am at least interested in their language. Visit the Getting Away Language Learning Center where you can find out how to learn another language, or where to purchase books, dictionaries, electronic translators, software and more

Click here for language helps, dictionaries, electronic translators, language software and other helps for learning a foreign language. Being able to speak at least some of the language in the country you are visiting will help you have a better time and enjoy your trip more. Jim.

hotels and other places of accommodation maintain contact with a nearby doctor who can be summoned quickly in case of illness. Emergency treatment in Danish hospitals is free of charge. If you are taking prescribed medicines, be sure to bring along a supply large enough to last throughout your trip as some of the medicines available in North America are not on the market in Denmark. And, I always take along a copy of my prescriptions (written genetically and not by brand name) when I travel in Europe - just in case.

Unless you will be staying for longer than three months, North American citizen need only their passport in Denmark. For additional information, contact one of the diplomatic representatives in the General Information section.
