Guernsey and Jersey
Note:  The Channel Islands are dependencies of the crown with their own systems of government.
The Islands have had a special relationship with the UK for over the last 900 years.
While the UK remains pretty much responsible for defense, Guernsey and Jersey are self-governing.

General Information on The Channel Islands
How Great Britain kept France from getting these wonderful little islands is truly a mystery. I believe that it goes back to the reigns of William the Conqueror. As the islands lay closer to the Cotentin Peninsula of the French coast, there is definitely a "French flavor" to the Channel Islands. The white-sand beaches and over 2,000 hours of sunshine make this a very popular vacation destination for the rain-soaked Londoners.

Along with the walks along the beach and the well-marked coast trails, one of the most popular pastimes here is sampling the wonderful seafood. Lobster and crab dishes are especially popular. And, if you tire of seafood, you can always have some wonderful lamb. But whatever you do, be sure to follow up your meal with some of their wonderful desserts that are normally covered in thick cream.

Along with the two large islands of Jersey and Guernsey with their sleepy fishing villages and larger towns of St. Helier and St. Peter Port, you should be sure to take the time to visit the tiny island of Sark. This place is so tranquil you will find it hard to believe. Automobiles are not allowed and you either have to walk or take one of the horse- or tractor-drawn carriages. They don't allow planes to fly over the island without special permission. So, if you really want to getaway from it all, try the island of Sark.

Language

The official language is English. I have found that it helps to know at least a little bit of the language as I travel in other countries. You do not have to be able to be a fluent speaker, but knowing a few key words and phrases will really help. I have found that, although almost everywhere I go I can find someone who speaks English, knowing just a few words of the local language can really be a help. And, it lets others know I am at least interested in their language. Visit the Getting Away Language Learning Center where you can find out how to learn another language, or where to purchase books, dictionaries, electronic translators, software and more

Click here for language helps, dictionaries, electronic translators, language software and other helps for learning a foreign language. Being able to speak at least some of the language in the country you are visiting will help you have a better time and enjoy your trip more. Jim.
