High Peaks & Lakes
Your on foot exploration of Bulgaria’s Rila Mountains begins in the north of the range, in the celebrated Seven Lakes area. Here you’ll make an ascent of Mt. Maliovitza (2729m) and wander amongst the many high lakes, streams and waterfalls. A gentler day starts with breakfast in the company of a mountain shepherd and ends relaxing in an open air thermal pool.

On Foot to Rila Monastery
For many the highlight of the trip will be the two-day expedition through the mountains to reach the beautiful 14th century Rila Monastery. On the way you’ll pass through some of the wildest and most remote parts of the range and overnight at a traditional mountain refuge - a great place to meet and swap tales with fellow walkers. The beautifully preserved monastery slowly reveals itself as you descend from a ridge above – a memorable last day of walking.

Responsible Travel
Staying in locally owned accommodation and using only local leaders provides direct benefits to the local economy. Sharing a meal with a local shepherd offers you a genuine insight into traditional mountain life.

Snowy Peaks & Ice-bound Lakes
The Rila Mountains hold some of the highest and most beautiful peaks in the Balkan Peninsula. Offering great summer walking, in winter the mountains here are transformed into an even wilder and more dramatic environment. Over the course of your week you’ll enjoy a variety of snowshoe treks. In the shadow of Mt. Maliovitza (2729m) you’ll trek in this beautiful wilderness area. Whilst snowshoeing from your pension in Guiletchitza to Panichiste, you’ll enter the celebrated Seven Lakes area.

Frozen Waterfalls & Cultural Highlights
Rest your limbs on a gentler day visiting some thermal pools and enjoying lunch with a local family. Snowshoe amongst frozen lakes to reach the 60-metre ice-encrusted Skakavitza waterfall – possibly the biggest icicle you’ll ever see! Finally you’ll visit two of Bulgaria’s historic highlights, Rila Monastery and Sofia.

Snowshoes
No longer the wooden ‘tennis rackets’ of old movies and story books, modern snowshoes are made of robust, lightweight materials, making them easy to put on and straightforward to use. Two trekking poles aid balance and away you go – into the deep white yonder!

Responsible Travel
Traveling on snowshoes is perhaps the most environmentally friendly form of winter activity. No ski lifts or piste ‘maintenance’ are required. Just a set of snowshoes, two walking poles and a pair of willing legs!

Skiing & Star Gazing
This snow-filled week of adventure is based in the spectacular limestone gorges and peaks of Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountains. The village of Chepelare boasts the country’s longest ski run but its impressive range of downhill and cross-country trails are altogether quieter than neighboring resorts. As well as skiing and snowboarding you’ve time for optional snowmobile rides or dog-sledding. One evening you’ll also visit a local observatory for a tour of the spectacular night sky.

Snowshoeing & Thermal Pools
Leaving Chepelare you’ll drive through the mountains to Devin. En route you’ll see Bulgaria’s largest canyon, join a local family for lunch and visit the impressive Devil’s Throat Cave. The underground waters at Devin feed a number of thermal swimming pools so you’ll be able to relax after your snowshoeing expeditions into the surrounding countryside! Your holiday ends in historic Sofia with time to see the main sights and of course some last minute souvenir hunting.

Responsible Travel
This trip benefits many local Bulgarian people, from the pension owners to our local family-run agency, the Group Leader and drivers. Chepelare and Devin are largely undiscovered by foreign tourists and your fellow skiers are more likely to be locals or visitors from other parts of Bulgaria. Sharing a meal with local people offers a genuine insight into every day life

Bulgarian Winter Experience Family Holiday

To help you choose the right trip, The Adventure Company has graded every itinerary. Obviously, grading is quite subjective - what is demanding for some people may be easy for others, and vice versa - so please keep this in mind when choosing a trip. Most healthy, active people will be able to take part in and enjoy nearly every trip. Just click on the grade assigned to the tour you are interested in -- Gentle - Easy - Active - Moderate - Demanding - Strenuous.

Gentle

These trips are more about culture, landscapes and sights, rather than activity. There may be the odd walk on reasonably flat terrain, but be aware that walking city streets or clambering over ancient monuments can still be tiring. The itinerary could involve some tough traveling, so a sense of adventure is essential; you should be flexible, open-minded and prepared for the unexpected. Anyone in good health should be able to take part.

Easy

This type of trip might have the odd half-day (say 2-4 hours) walk, or possibly longer. There will invariably be some ascent and descent but on generally easy gradients. Max. altitude 2000m. Suitable for anyone in good health and normal fitness.

Active

Can involve activities like cycling, kayaking, walking, rafting, or even dog-sledding, for a half or full day. Suitable for anyone in good health and of normal fitness. No previous experience required, but you should undertake a program of exercise before the trip to get the most enjoyment out of each activity.

Moderate

Harder half/full-day walks (3-6 hours) over rugged terrain and involving regular steep ascent and descent (max. 700m) and possibly with some minor obstacles. Max. altitude around 3000m. You will have to carry a daysac (up to 6kg). Requires reasonable physical condition. Previous experience or preparation beneficial.

Demanding

Tough half day or full day-walks (up to 8 hrs) over rough paths, involving considerable ascent/descent (up to 1000m) on steep slopes with some minor obstacles or hazards. Max. altitude around 4000m. You will have to carry a large daysac or small rucksack (occasionally with a sleeping bag and personal gear up to 12kg). Good physical condition is essential. Some previous experience and/or preparation essential.

Strenuous

Challenging, full-day walks of up to 12 hours, on very steep slopes in difficult terrain, with ascent/descent of over 1000m, at altitudes of over 4000m and/or in a rigorous climate. Many obstacles – some major. Scrambling may be involved. This also applies to treks of extended duration and any trek which is unsupported, i.e. where you must carry a rucksack with personal gear, food and equipment. Excellent physical condition and previous experience and appropriate preparation are essential.

Note: technical skills, e.g. rope-work, using crampons or ice-axes, are not needed on any trip.
