One of the best ways to get good travel information is to check with folks who know a lot about the area in which you plan to visit. I recommend that after you get the general information you are seeking about Canada, you check with Allexperts (Allexperts - Canada! ) for specific information about the places you plan to visit. It is a great site! Ask volunteer experts questions about travel and tourism, and attractions for free! Allexperts and Getting Away With Jim Bruner, working together to give you the best in reliable travel information.

Getting to the Yukon
By Land
By Air
By Sea
By Land
There are two main routes that lead from British Columbia to the Yukon. The Alaska Highway begins at Dawson Creek and stretches for
2,233 kilometers (1,388 miles) before reaching Delta Junction, Alaska. It is a
modern, asphalt-surfaced highway and along it you will find gas, food and lodging
about every 32-80 km (20-50
mi.). The Stewart-Cassiar Highway, which winds through the interior of British
Columbia meeting the
Alaska Highway 22 km (14 mi.) west of Watson Lake, Yukon, has been upgraded
to all-weather status but is still a little rugged and remote so you will want
to be sure to plan ahead for gas, food and lodging
as services are limited.
All drivers must have a valid driver's license, proof of
registration and insurance. U.S. drivers must obtain a Canadian Non-Resident
Interprovincial Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card from their insurance
company, as proof that they have proper coverage. Yukon law requires that
drivers carry at least $200,000 third-party liability insurance.
Headlights must be on at all times when driving Yukon highways.
Drivers and passengers must wear seat belts; children under six must be seated
in a prescribed car seat. Radar detectors are prohibited. Rental vehicles -
including cars, vans, truck campers and motor homes - are available in
Whitehorse. Cars can be rented in Dawson.
Gas is measured in liters in Canada. A liter is about a
quarter-gallon. Distances are measured in kilometers; one kilometer is about 0.6
miles. To convert miles to kilometers multiply the number of miles by 1.6. to convert kilometers to miles multiply the numbers of kilometers by 0.6.
If
you prefer not to drive, there is scheduled motor coach service to the Yukon
that is available six days
a week from Edmonton, Alberta, and from Vancouver, B.C.
Americans who plan to drive in The Yukon should obtain a Canadian non-resident inter provincial motor vehicle liability insurance card from their insurance company.
By Air
The Yukon is less than a day's flight from almost any city in North America
and you will find daily flights from Vancouver to Whitehorse. There is also scheduled air service
from Juneau, Anchorage and Fairbanks,
Alaska.
By Sea
Regularly scheduled ferry service to Alaska
and the Yukon runs from Bellingham, Washington and Vancouver, B.C. The trip up the
Inside Passage is a favorite way to travel north with scenery that is breathtaking.
The route is teeming with eagles, whales and other wildlife making this a
favorite for wildlife lovers. Reservations
are required; call 1-800-642-0066 for Alaska Ferry information, or
1-250-386-3431 for B.C. Ferry schedules.

Attractions and Things to See and Do in The Yukon
Fishing
and Hunting
Fishing If you plan any kind of fishing in the Yukon you will need a license.
These are available at most sporting goods stores and other commercial
facilities. A National Park Fishing License is required when fishing in any
National Park. Hunting licenses and permits are required for all types of
hunting in the Yukon. You also must secure the services of a licensed guide for
big game hunting. Licenses require a waiting period and can be obtained through
the Department of Renewable Resources (see below). Canada
has strict gun control laws and firearms for hunting and sport purposes must be
declared at the border. Visitors may possess a rifle or shotgun for protection
against bears, except in national parks. Persons who use such weapons in defense
against bear attack must immediately report the killing to a Yukon conservation
officer and turn in the skull and hide. Further information is available from
the Canadian Firearms Center toll-free at 1-800-731-4000, or visit their Web

On Line Pharmacies Canada
can save residents of the United States between 25-90% on prescription
medications. In fact, many seniors are able
to save hundreds of dollars a month. Online Pharmacies Canada,
which is located in Kirkland, Washington,
just a little south of the Canadian border, has partnered with a premier
Canadian doctors' clinic and pharmacy to help American consumers obtain
substantial savings on their prescription medications. Additional savings are
realized due to the strong U.S. dollar compared to the Canadian dollar. Currently,
$1 U.S. dollar will buy approximately $1.55 Canadian currency. Additionally,
the Canadian government utilizes price controls on pharmaceuticals to cap
subsequent price increases.

Milepost 2002 :
Trip Planner for Alaska, Yukon Territory, British Columbia, Alberta &
Northwest Territories - A reader comments about Milepost 2002.
"I live here, and find this book to be nice to have around. I
purchase one every couple of years. Recreation activities for me usually
involve a lot of driving, often in remote and infrequently traveled areas.
The Milepost is an indispensable guide to construction, frost heaves, and
other road conditions. When you are barreling down a narrow, winding road
with a trailer in tow, it's nice to not have surprises. For the visitor to
Alaska, this book provides detailed information on sites to see, lodging,
fuel stations, etc. If you plan to drive to or around Alaska, this book is
a must have. Even if you don't plan a visit, the book makes a nice
memento. It is interesting to compare the new issue to the older ones and
see the changes over time. Yes, even in Alaska, progress marches on.
Enjoy, and have a safe trip." |

The Milepost 2001 :
Trip Planner for Alaska, Yukon Territory, British Columbia, Alberta &
Northwest Territories - The Milepost provides the Alaska and Yukon
bound drivers with all of the support (lodging, gas stations, dining,
vehicle repairs, medical, etc.) and sight-seeing information needed to
have a safe, comfortable and informative journey. It details this
information on mile-by-mile basis which allows the traveler to know the
joys and potential hazards of the trip. It also provides this same detail
for all of the major roads that lead to and from the Alaska Highway -
within NW Canada and throughout Alaska. Also a necessary reference for the
traveler who flies to Alaska and rents a car in Anchorage or Fairbanks. It
also provides history and trivia of many of the little towns in the Alaska
Wilderness. Alaska adventurers should also consider getting Discovering
Denali if they are going to explore Denali National Park. |
